Who would they call when they have the same sort of problems with
Windows? ("How come every time I print it prints an extra page?" is
something the Windows people around here haven't been able to fix... HP
says talk to Microsoft who says to talk to HP...) The Microsoft warning
label on software does not mean you get support for it. Read your EULA.
If they insist on supporting an 8 user network with no outside help,
then they would be best off spending the money on paper and pens.

The situation you lay out above is not "off the shelf". Assumedly a
company that paid a consultant to recommend a solution would listen to
the recommendation and, upon agreeing to it, would get support for that
decision. (Ie, who would they call when their tape drive barfs or their
hard drive crashes or they get infected with worm-o-the-week or Exchange
toasts its database or their mail server is black holed for being an
open relay....)
Small offices of 8 people routinely hire consultants for the "tough"
things. There is a -huge- industry serving businesses of just this size
right now. About the only platform that doesn't have a huge army of
"consultants" and "network engineers" to support it is MacOS, but that
mainly seems to be that it almost always works and when it fails it
is a more "graceful" problem. (To the Mac types: I'm not knocking it --
MacOS is far more stable than Windows and certainly easier to use. It's
just not as stable as Linux, though you have to work hard to get a Mac
to refuse to boot. It's certainly a good machine for the untrained
masses, which is probably 90% of the market.)

Stop that. NOW. Usenet is a plain-text medium except on certain binaries
groups; MIME-encoded garbage is not needed.
>Does Suse 6.4 (DVD edition as supplied on UK PC mag), contain the LILO
>that is not affected by the 1024 cyliner issue ?
Doubtful. The normal DVD edition of SuSE 6.4 shipped before the new LILO
was available. If you must install SuSE on your machine using the new
LILO, follow these steps:
0. install system, putting everything in the place you want it to go and
ignoring all the warnings
1. Do not install LILO--SuSE gives you the option to do that.
2. Make a boot floppy! You can do this during the install process.
3. Boot Linux from your boot floppy, get the new LILO at
ftp://sd.dynhost.com/pub/linux/lilo/ , compile it, install it, run
it. Enjoy!
If 3 seems daunting, keep that boot floppy around and boot your Linux
system with it until you've gained enough experience to be comfortable
with compiling and installing things from source code.

The kernal patches are open sourced as they should be (and must be),
so anyone can and of course are welcomed to update the patches for
newer kernels. TreLOS tries to provide updated patches so that
that everyone does not have to be a kernel patching expert.
But an expert need not wait for TreLOS to provide updated patches.
Note: Out there are two versions of the patches:
- The original version is not compatible with SMP kernels.
- The current version patches are compatible with SMP kernels.
Note: The Win4Lin 1.0 driver modules require that SMP be
disabled even when using the new patches.
When Win4Lin 2.0 comes out, it will require the newer version
patches in order to fully support SMP.)
The Win4Lin driver modules and user programs are not dependent on
the 2.2.x kernel version. The intent of the design of the patches
is to isolate all the kernel differences in the patch (in the so
called "Merge-Kernel-Interface, or "MKI"). Bascially this defines
a stanard way for driver modules to access kernel data structures
and services needed by Win4Lin modules, for those structures
and services that are not a part of the normal "DDI".
The reason there are different patches for the various versions is that
usually the patches for older versions don't "just work" because things
are moved around too much in the kernel source between 2.2.x versions.
Also some distributions put in their own changes from the "standard kernel"
that move code around too much for the patches for the "standard kernel"
to work. Note: Red Hat does NOT equal "standard".
So any kernel hacker that is experienced with applying patches to
the Linux kernel should be able to adjust the patches for any new
2.2.x kernel, unless the new version has some radical differences.
Note: If you do this, please use the newer version patches that are
"SMP" ready. These are the ones with "SMP" in their name.
Please feel free to apply the patches to your own distributions
so they will be "Win4Lin Ready".
-David
P.S. The 2.3 (soon 2.4) kernels are much too different for the
patches for 2.2.x to be directly ported. We are working on
providing the needed patches for 2.4 when it comes out. When
these are ready it will be announced on the TreLOS web siste
(www.trelos.com).

Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2000 23:58:08 GMT
I'm having trouble printing an encrypted PDF. I'm using RH6.2 and Adobe
Acrobat for linux. I am able to view this pdf with acroread, but I
cannot print it. The reason that I know it's encrypted is because when
I tried a pdf2ps it complained that this pdf is encrypted. I am able to
print/view other pdf's with acroread, just not this one.
I can print this pdf from Windows, so I don't see why I wouldn't be able
to print it in Linux (especially since I can view it in linux).
Does anyone know why I can't print this pdf in Linux.

I have a bunch of HOWTOs I recently downloaded that are in HTML format
but for some reason are missing the .html extension. How do I add this
extension to each of the files in a single operation? I'm thinking
piping "ls" to "mv" but simply providing the extension as the new
filename argument obviously isn't going to work. How would I do this?
Or is there a better way?

I think this ought to work:
for * in f
do
mv $f $f.html
done;
Or something like this. I am not at my box right now to try it.. Might
want to create a test dir and copy a couple of files there and give it a try..
If there is something wrong with this I am sure someone will followup a
let us know.

I'm glad you (Rasteri) brought this up, my story is rather similar
had no problems with the modem last time, but this install
(I'm still very much on the learning curve) is giving me a huge
modem headache. I'm running Linux Redhat/Mandrake 6.1

Currently using AT&F&C1&D2X3
(I hate this parrot fasion stuff...this came with the modem (in fine print)
and works OK in win95 but is there a definitive list(s) )

/dev/ttyS1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
which looks grand in windows I'm on
COM2, IRQ3, I/O 02f8-02ff
>c) YOur ISP changed something.
Unlikely, though I have tried their support, but as soon as I
mention linux i get put on hold indefinitly :-(
Using minicom or kppd terminal I can log into my account no problem
but then just get weird system characters every few seconds.
dialing in with kppd Ican ping the given IP No. but everything else
is either unreachable or just hangs :-(
Minicom is also only available to root as I get an access
denied message when logged in as a normal user is this normal
or possibly the *root* of my problem.
Any help appreciated.
BTW I will ask seperatly in the appropriate newsgroup
but how would I get seti to run only as a screensaver and not
constantly in the background.
Thanks in advance :-)

Hello!
I am having permission problems between my windows98 box and my linux box.
I cannot use either computer to write files to, or delete files from, the
other system. I have set my smb.conf file to read:
[global]
workgroup = DeltaHouse
guest account= nobody
keep alive = 30
os level = 2
security = share
encrypt passwords = yes
[mp3]
path = /mp3
read only =no
browseable =yes
public=yes
create mode=777
writeable=true
whenever I try to do a file copy or delete or creat directory, I get a
permission error on either box. I can read files between them just fine,
though. Any suggestions?

Putting flash rom in a MS WinCE device is completely new: In fact, the
Ipaq may be the first to do so, and it is as far as I recall.
Just because it makes sense doesn't mean the manufacturers were doing

Hello
I have my ppp system up and running perfectly but I have four
questions.
1)How can I insert the ATM0 (no volume) command into my chat script
2)Has anybody written a script that will check the ppp connection and if
neccessary restart it, my isp cuts me off after two hours.
3)I currently have my ip-up script mailing the contents of ifconfig to my
hotmail address whenever it starts up so that I can connect from outside. Is
there a one line way of ftp-ing the same to a specified server so that I could
insert the output into my normal website. In a perfect world I could click on a
link in my website to take me to my home website but I imagine this would
require a fair amount of programming.
4)I get cut off after 20 minutes if I don't do anything. I thought I could
solve this by using crontab to ping the nameservers but it still cuts, if I'm
browsing I have no problems, any ideas?

Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2000 21:31:07 -0400
Firstly, let me thank Matt (Dances with Crows) for his
thoughtful and helpful contributions in this matter.
Okay, I tried letting it fsck the root in ro and it didn't
make a whit of difference. So I scoured the file I'd
suspected earlier
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
more closely. In particular, I compared the invocations of
fsck in the general boot section versus the fast boot
section. In the end, after reading the man pages to decipher
the various switches, I changed
fsck -T -a $fsckoptions / -- -C 0
to
fsck -T -a $fsckoptions -- -C 0
and this solved my troubles nicely. Apparently, somehow that
explicit reference to the root got included in that command
string, forcing a check of it on each and every boot. It's
really unnecessary, since the -a flag makes fsck roll
through the fstab entries when not cleanly umounted or when
their time is up, anyway...

Use the demand option in your options file, this would be /etc/ppp/options

When using demand you will not want to use ip-up, but should start pppd which will
now always be watching the port. Iff you need your IP address check out the
following "http://www.mrdo.com/linux/ppps/"
