Nope. Maximum Linux? It is the windows version. For use under a Windows
emulator in case you have to access a web site that only works with IE.

Hi there,

I'm new to linux. I am installing OPEN_Linux2.2 on Compaq presario 7222
(CPU P133, Mem 48m, HD 1.6g). I follow the instruction and everything
seems OK. (boot with lizard install, then put modules disk, then
loading kernel OK
Booting kernel OK

Automatic hardware detection
Probing for PCMICIA cards none
Probing for SCSI hosts none
Probing for ATAPI CDROMS OK
Probing for other CDRDMS none
Probing for Ethernet cards OK

Automatic install source detection
Installation from CDRM OK

PACKAGES 100%
POSTINSTALL 100%

Then choose
root password
login name and password
enable DHCP
the rest select default )

Then the grey "Finish" turns dark at the end of postinstall, I click
it.
The screen becomes command interface and bla, bla. Finally
...
...
...
INIT: Switching to runlevel: 3
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal

Then nothing appears alive for a few hours (at least 3 hours).
The computer seems down, but it will respond to Ctrl Alt Del. And I
will have to start installation all over again
What is
wrong? Any help is appreciated.

search at www.freshmeat.net, there you will find plenty of newsreaders. I'm

xmcd... Then run it. Then hit the |> button.

'plugger' is the usual name (it is a generic plugin and invokes things
such as timidty to play midis, etc). I don't use it, since I'd rather
hear mp3's than tinny midis and crap from web pages.

Hi folks, appreciate any help given.

I'm using Linux and would appreciate if anyone can recommend some Java
IDE tools for this platform. I am trying to develop a Java application
for my course. I really can't afford to a few thousand dollars for some
of these tools. I have been working with Sun's compiler and am getting
real sick.....i don't mind paying a hundred bucks or so for a simple IDE
that can debug (that show more debug details please), step through the
codes and support my beans/servlets.

Some of my friends recommended open source IDE tools like NetBeans, is
it good? Its site mentioned that it has no stable version!?

Thank you very much.

Hi all --

I've installed Linux 6.0 on an IBM 390X laptop (PIII-450, 14.1" display)
with Win 2000 in the first partition.

When I boot Linux (I use Boot Magic from Win 2000) the display comes up
as a jaggedy 8-bit display. Anyone know what's going on and how I can
fix it?

Also, when I created the partitions (I used Partition Magic) it only let
me create an 8MB swap partition. Is this enough? (Iwanted to make a 64MB
swap.)

Thanks for all help,

Actually, NT does use the HLT command and has for a long time. Only Win9.x
and DOS do not use HLT.

My answer was to get Partition Magic and set up my 'puter for

buy any version of PM from 3.0 up to get a boot manager.

Unless you are using FrameMaker or Corel Office for Linux I don't see the
"real" use for this OS... at least for the time being. There are no "real"
software packages for Linux, other than those two I mentioned, and to be
sincere I don't see the need for a new OS (whatever happened to BeOS? Did
you know you can download the latest version for free???). Windows 2000 is
the best release from Microsoft ever (so far) and most, if not all, real
World applications can be used with this OS.
Memory and system management are beyond the capabilities of NT4, networking
is actually fun and easier than ever, and (finally!) having Plug-N-Play/USB
support on high end workstations is a God given gift. My system hasn't
crashed once since October of '99 when I started with RC2... not even a blue
screen of death so far.
All in all, I would not switch from W2K. Then again, I have not used Linux
(just because there are not apps I can use with it), and OSX from Apple
should be around the corner by the time you read this. Apple is also
working (supposedly) on an OS than can also run on Intel based platforms
(x86 processors; I guess the G4 didn't live up to its hype, too bad).
Hopefully this OS's, even though I don't really see the need for them, can
be developed furthermore and software companies start looking at them with a
closer eye. Adobe and Corel already have (few) offerings... let's see who
follows.
My 2 cents.

I'm using Mandrake 7.1. I'm having trouble communicating outside of my home
network. Using kppp, I can connect to my ISP without a problem. I stay
connected until my ISP finally disconnects me (about 20 min). My problem
comes when I try to view web pages. My browser can't find them. I tried
telnet and ping. Neither one works. However, I can telnet and ping my own
network. I am using a resolv.conf file that is a copy from another distro
who's dial up works. What could I be overlooking?

Darren
