I'm trying to get an HP inkjet printer (PSC 500) setup to print under
Linux (Debian). I've got it working using apsfilter, ghostscript 5.10,
and lprng using gs's cdj550 driver. The problem is the results look
like crap. The dithering is _very_ low resolution.
The Linux printing HOWTO says to pass the -dDITHERPPI variable in on
the gs command line in my filter. I've tried that, and even tried it
by running gs from the command line & dumping to a file (eliminating
the whole printing process altogether), but gs appears to be ignoring
the DITHERPPI setting. Regardless of what ppi value I pass in, the
output file is identical (as compared with diff(1)). The gs(1) man
page reads:
Note that gs_init.ps makes systemdict read-only, so the
values of names defined with -D/d/S/s cannot be changed
(although, of course, they can be superseded by defini-
tions in userdict or other dictionaries.)
So what's up with that? I can't find any explanation of userdict
anywhere. What must I do to get gs to print at a decent resolution?
The command line I'm using is:
# gs -q -r300x300 -sDEVICE=cdj550 -sPAPERSIZE=letter -dNOPAUSE -dSAFER -dDITHERPPI=300
-sOutputFile=/tmp/delme /usr/share/apsfilter/lib/redir_gs_msg.ps
/usr/doc/gs/examples/colorcir.ps
I've tried with & without redir_gs_msg.ps with no change.
I'm nearing the end of the 100% refund window on this printer, and if I
can't get it working reasonably well soon, I'm gonna have to return it.
Yes, I know it's not really a printer problem, but if I can't print worth
a hoot, what good is even having a printer?
On a barely-related note, while trying to install the scanner software
for this all-in-one beast for use with wine, my CDROM drive has been
locking up the shell that's trying to access it. More on that later.
Thanks,
Obi-Wan

You don't need to be bilingual: cd to "/usr/src/linux/kernel" and
then open "timer.c" with your favorite test editor. Comment out
lines 580 & 581 like so:
/* if (p->priority < DEF_PRIORITY)
kstat.cpu_nice += user_tick; */
Then compile.
It's working for me, so far.

I'm setting XUSERFILESEARCHPATH on a Mandrake 7.0 system in the same
way as I do for Solaris and Irix systems (to $HOME/app-defaults/%N).
However xterm doesn't seem to pick up its resource file from it.
Running strace shows that it isn't looking for
$HOME/app-defaults/XTerm
but rather is trying
$HOME/en_GB/XTerm
$HOME/en/XTerm
$HOME/XTerm
(and "Color" options). It then looks along the XFILESEARCHPATH as i
would expect.
The "en_GB" and "en" parts seem to come from various language
environment variebales which are set (if I unset all of them it looks in
a sub-directory C).
So, does anyone know how to get the value of XUSERFILESEARCHPATH to
be used? The string does appear in libXt. Or does anyone know what the
resource file search order is that is used here, and why it is different
to the "standard" X?

They are the same thing, but the use of conf.modules is now (since the
introduction of the 2.2.x kernels) deprecated. You should be using
modules.conf if you've got a 2.2.0 or newer kernel.
conf.modules still works, but won't forever.

Okay, so the RPM database thinks these packages have been installed.
It's possible that they are corrupted, though - `rpm -V kernel' will
tell you if the right files are indeed in the right place.

So, when you boot, it should load the 2.2.14 kernel. What's the
output of uname -a now?
> You should know that I do run NT boot loader in order to invoke
> linux but this shouldn't matter right?
Correct, assuming that the NT bootloader points to the boot record
where lilo is installed (I don't know how it works, but I assume
that't it?)

If uname -a returns the 2.2.14 kernel, and you're having problems with
the modules, it might be because of the config file where the module
loader looks up which modules to load.
> Should I reinstall all of RH6.2 or just all kernel related rpms?

It sounds as though your kernel package installation is somehow
screwed up. No need to reinstall all of RH6.2, though. I wouldn't
recommend simply reinstalling the kernel packages either, unless
you're confident about what you're doing - some config. files were set
up to match your hardware when you installed, and it's possible that
these would be deleted or overwritten (*).
I would suggest that the best fix is to install the updated 2.2.16
kernel RPM's that you will find on the Red Hat support site - you just
need to download and install the RPM's, no need to recompile. You
should do this anyway, for security reasons. The announcement (in the
`security fixes' section) gives a link to how to perform this kernel
upgrade in a safe way.
If downloading these packages is too expensive or time consuming,
another option is to recompile the kernel from the sources you have
(though this does leave you open to the security holes that are fixed
in 2.2.16). To do this, you will have to know about your hardware,
though it's quite likely that the default kernel config file that
ships with Red Hat will work. The Red Hat documentation contains
instructions on how to recompile - follow them to the letter and you
should be safe. The golden rule is to make sure that you have a
bootable kernel in /boot/ that also has an entry in /etc/lilo.conf,
and preferably one on a boot floppy too.
Good luck,
Stephen.
(*) When springcleaning a recent installation, I accidentally removed
the kernel-pcmcia-cs package. No problem, I thought - the RPM file
was still on my hard disk, so all I had to do was reinstall it.
WRONG! The deinstallation process had removed the file containing the
hardware configuration (and the flag that says that PCMCIA is allowed
to be used), and reinstallation of the files did not re-probe for
these values. I had to enter the controller type, excluded IRQ's,
etc. by hand in order to get it working.

If you create a file .xsession in your home directory, then X will
execute this startup file rather than the default one or ~/.Xclients.
So, if your .xsession file looks like
#!/bin/bash
exec xterm
then all you will get is a grey screen with a single xterm. X will
exit when you exit the xterm.
I often use this technique when giving a presentation from my laptop.

I've been using Gnorpm to install packages under Redhat6.2 - it's a nice

But since a reinstall of the OS (forced by a security breach), I've been
getting a lot of failures under the Rpmfind function. Specifically it
will do searching for and give information on packages without a problem
but when "Install" is chosen, the install will fail with console
messages like "GnoRPM-WARNING: Couldn't download files" and
"LibFind-WARNING: FTP unknown or unexpected error". It looks as if it is
trying to download files that aren't where it expecets to find them.
Any ideas about rectifying this?

By running X directly you bypass all the xinitrc script stuff, so it'll

[Sigh] I really empathize here. Your system comes with a text browser
called lynx. This is fast and extremely reliable but no graphics. Use
this when you can. You might be surprised at how easy it is to use if you
just want to gather info. It does take a few days to get used to it,
though.
For graphics give Mozilla a try:
http://www.mozilla.org
This program is still young and buggy. But its your best hope right now
for a decent graphical browser. Basically it is the heart of the new
Netscape browser (still in beta?). But its still behind IE in many ways.
Nevertheless this is the one which I currently use.
Although I use GNOME myself, I belive the KDE file manager also handles
very basic graphical browsing. Try typing a URL where the directory path
appears. This won't handle complicated pages (for example those with
java) but probably is OK for the simple stuff. And its convenient if you
typically leave a file manager window open all the time (as I do).
There are other graphical browsers out there but I really can't recommend
them. I don't think any of them even supports java and they almost all go
down if you simply look at them the wrong way. But its been a while since
I really looked. Try these links to get a list.

Good luck.
