Pine is probably better for beginners.

IMO GNOME's best email app at present is probably mahoganey:

Balsa is also getting better. Evolution will be usable soon but
absolutely not yet.

Define "slow." On my P-150/32M laptop (running SuSE 6.4 and KDE) it takes
a good 25-30 seconds to start Netscape. If your machine takes longer, you
have a problem somewhere.
Make sure you created a swap partition, and make sure that swap partition
is enabled--"free" should show a line that says "swap" if that's the
case. Make sure that the CPU cache is enabled in the BIOS. Don't run KDE
or GNOME; they're resource hogs--use something lightweight like blackbox
or fvwm2. Comment out some of the lines in /etc/inittab where virtual
consoles are started on tty[1-6] since you probably don't use 6 virtual
consoles... 3 is plenty, and each one eats a bit of memory. Give your
hard drive a boost by executing "hdparm -c1 -u1 -m16 /dev/hda" at boot
time in /sbin/init.d/boot.local or /etc/rc.d/rc.local or wherever Debian
keeps its local bootscript.
If all else fails, buy more RAM. That will certainly speed things up.

I have a serious problem with my Red Hat 6.0 Linux. I was using Gnome

back on, Linux would not complete the boot process. The last message shown
was "Freeing unused kernel mem: 60K freed" then it stopped. I am new to

squid is not a program that makes a connection to between internet and
network (though I thought that also at first). Squid is a cache program, it
does the same as "Temporary internet files" does for IE. You should try to
connect to the internet and network with 'linuxconf' (under Xwindows), for
more info see ethernet-howto. If this works you can add a cache for
web-pages.

As I've observed elsewhere, Corel's mission seems to be to bring the
attitudes and practices of the Windows world to Linux.
> It just doesn't make good business sense.
Apparently to Corel consistency of the GUI is more important then
functionality. A pretty good (IMHO) ppp configurator called pppconfig is
standard in Debian (on which Corel is based). However it is not a KDE
program so they took it out.

What's behind ? The kernel configuration is identical.

cdparanoia for ripping audio from the CD
cdrecord for recording audio to a new CD
xcdroast or cdrtoaster for a GUI front end to cdparanioa and cdrecord

all works well.
I I want to read the data written, I must call three times

the first time it reads the dir1
the second simply does nothing
and the 3th reads dir2.
This behaviour is strange and very diffenre ftom our HP-UX machines.
We run Suse Linux with Kernel 2.035.
I know it is old, but "never change a running system ". It's up since 224

Interesting. Things are moving along. Does the control panel still not

There isn't a true telnet-logger unless you've put one in yourself--check
http://freshmeat.net/ and search for "log" if you really want one, or you
can cobble something together with tcpdump+ethereal if you want to see the
raw TCP/IP packets from all telnet sessions. You can easily look in
~user/.bash_history to see the shell commands the user has executed.
This may not provide enough information for you, but it's a start.

Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 09:50:14 -0400
I am working on kernel 2.2.14 as a new linux user.
Mandrake installed linux version 2.2.14 without any
kernel source files.
When I downloaded version 2.2.14 I ended up with a
lot less 'stuff' than with version 2.2.16. So I am having
a lot of trouble running commands (menuconfig, xconfig)
under 14 that work great under 16. I lacked a lot of
important files under the 'net' subdirectory. For example,
I lacked Config.in in the 'net' subdirectory. You seem
to be bailing out of that directory, so maybe you have
files missing there.
I haven't determined if I'm unpacking things wrong or
if version 2.2.14 is deficient. I need help here myself.
In any event I would compare your files to a later
kernel version and see if you're missing files.

Ok,
This is the scenario. A Linux RedHat 6.1 running an application
started from the inittab as with the command: xinit my_application
I am not using a PC keyboard (actually there is no keyboard connected)
After some minutes, the screen is switched off and there is no way to
recover it (since I have no keyboard to "press any key").
I am becoming crazy because I cannot find what is switching off the
screen.
Any ideas ?
