IMO, the 'tmpfile' function defined by SUSv2 (in <stdio.h>) is far
better (as in safer) and more portable.

The "82003872CE"-part should be appended to the rest of the URL,
without a space or newline or anything in between. The OP probably
thought this would be clear to most of us.

Probably not. Just go to themes.org and find a theme that looks like
whatever Windows theme it is you use. You may find quite a few
nice ones there.

http://kde.themes.org/
http://gtk.themes.org/

As far as icons go you might not be able to find pixmaps similar to
various icons but there are some Linux utils that will convert
.ico files to .xpm. I think one is called xicon or something.

Y'know, I did that recently though I had a few problems at first.
  man ar
will give you some info on using it. I believe it's just
`ar x libname.a' which will extract all object files.

Actually, the documentation says to extract the files from the
static library (libforms.a) or compile glcanvas.c and add it to
the shared lib. Guess you'll have to do both since the GL in
the static is not Mesa.

At the bottom of xform's mkconfig.h you'll see an example of how
to link the shared lib.

Some motherboards are better about IRQ sharing than others.

With a previous computer, I couldn't let my SCSI card share
an IRQ with my Video card without getting SCSI timeouts. I
also couldn't let my Video cards share an IRQ with my sound
card without getting horrendous skipping playing audio files.

However, with my new computer I have no problems with sharing
IRQs, although I've never had three PCI cards share the same
IRQ.

Hi,

        pr -e4 -f -w132 -l80 <some file> | lpr -<something>

and have lpr switch the LJ from 80x60 to 132x80, print
compressed print (17cpi?) and then return the printer to
default lpi and cpi. This is also a postscript printer and

What is the cleanest way to do this?--Hack a filter for a new

You could hack a ghostscript configuration to use the appropriate
monospaced font. To use the HP's built-in fonts, I don't know of
existing filters that do that sort of retro, fixed-width formatting.
You can simply copy an existing /etc/printcap entry, adjusting for the
132-column width. Set "if=<path-to-filter> or "of=<filter>" in
/etc/printcap if it's an older lpd, or whatever configuration file
lprng uses, respectively, depending on the existing configuration, in
whatever language you feel most comfortable writing complex escape
sequenc with.

Try mounting the iso image as a filesystem like such:

mount <your iso file> /mnt/<mount point> -o loop -t iso9660

If it won't mount or you have problems looking at parts of it, then it's the
image. I do this when I DL iso images to see if there's any problems.
Haven't had a bad one yet, so either it doesn't matter much, I haven't had a
bad iso image file, or I'm just lucky.

Judging from what you're saying it sounds like the ISO image is probably
toasty-fried in places. (Errors in the same places and all.)

Like you I got qt from trolltech and complied it my self. And I similar
sounding dependency problems. Finally I found an rpm
(ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/rawhide/1.0/i386/RedHat/RPMS/qt-2.2.1-5.i386.rpm)
and used that.

The rest of my dependency problems were related to apps that I had no
use for so the simple solution was to get rid of them. (could be that I
decided that I didn't need the devel apps and decided not to install
them either). I figure I'll worry about re-installing them if I ever
need them.

Let me know if this solves your dependency problems. If you manage to
get a kde desktop working let me know...

Subject: wu-ftp more setup
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 07:21:12 -0700

I installed wu-ftp 2.6.1 on a Redhat 6.0 box. It seems to work except for
one nagging problem: when I tap into my ftp server from elsewhere the client
won't display folders, although I am able to get or mget the files within
the folders.

This may be because when I installed wu-ftp it did not create the /home/ftp
folder, or any of the lib, bin, etc, or pub subfolders of the 'ftp' folder.
I had to create these manually, and ensured that their permissions matched
those of another wu-ftp system (on another Redhat 6.0 box) that actually
works. Perhaps I missed something. I ensured that the bin and etc folders
had files copied into them from the working Linux system. I also copied
/etc/ftpaccess over to the problem box.

Here's what happens:

I type 'ftp' from a client and say 'open 172.17.10.116'. I then log in
successfully as anonymous with an e-mail password. I get the prompt 'ftp>'.
I do a 'cd pub', (I have files waiting in '/home/ftp/pub' with the
appropriate permissions on the target ftp server box). I do a 'get ppp-on'.
The 'ppp-on' file transfers perfectly. But if I do an 'ls' command to
display the contents of pub (ie: the 'pub' folder from the ftp server at
172.17.10.116) all I get is this:

ftp>ls
200 PORT command successful
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.
226 Transfer complete.
ftp>

Why won't my remote files and folders display?

Thanks,
Micer

I suppose I could have figured it out if I thought the reference sufficiently
important. But mutt works OK for me and never killed the OS. When someone
posts a hot link, it should be correct, IMAO, and that clicking on it shoult

How would we know? Go take a look, figure out what's damaged and fix

difference between 1 2 and 3), but that the rest of your /etc/init.d or

Mine came with Red Hat Linux 6.0, slightly customized for the particular
hardware. It has a fancy logo on it that says, in part, "VA LINUX Systems". They
are better known than my other (Windows 95/Linux) box that is also branded, but
you probably never heard of the Touch Systems company (not the one than makes
touch-sensitive displays: the other one).

I do not know if VA Linux Systems supply Windows anymore. I got the impression
that they have no contract with Microsoft and when they did offer dual-boot
machines (they do not seem to anymore), they went down the street and bought a
Windows CD-ROM at a retail outlet (and charged the customer for it, of course).

Well, it's an opinion... defeated by the facts!!! About being less
intimidating, it migth be true, and this only demonstrates people tends
to fear what ignore, but it is not more user friendly: most Win users
have their computers down or with mangled functionallity most of the
time and most Win users search for help (either proffesional or from
this "friend of mine who knows soooo much about computers) as soon as
have to do something just a bit more difficult than to run a setup
program, so where user friendliness goes? To my knowledge all Win gives
is a false sensation of easiness that lasts long enough to buy a lisence
and so forth being tighted to it for the ages to come. The *true* is
that once the OS is installed (and don't forget this step is avoided by
Win users since OS comes preinstalled: I would want to know how easy win
seemed if it came on a CD with a non even formated hard disk, or if the
first step to install win were repartition the hard disk just to gain
space for it) Linux is more user friendly by far as the Linux user
community show by itself: they are more friend of their comp's OS than
those from Windows.

Don't upgrade, then: install it (if it's done from command line don't
try 'rpm -Uhvv packet_name' but 'rpm -ihvv packet_name'...
More info using 'man rpm'.

Yes: it's true. But I would say better *except for kernel update*.
Please note that when that Win2K user wrote about shouting down his
computer on updates, noone of them were kernel updates. Unless it has
changed, just changing some *Dinamically Loadable Libraries* can come in
the system being unstable enough that is has to be rebooted (why are
they called Dinamically loadable, then I would ask)... Well, my
corporative mail server has now an uptime of 80 days... it is not so
much... but the truth is that I put that server in production exactly 80
days ago... (in that time some NT 4.0 server acting mainly as web
server has been rebooted twice due to applying hotfixes).
