Hi. I have 2 pc's, server and client01, and a working network...

On the server I run

root# esd -public -port 11112 &

and it says:

"- accepting connections on port 11112"

and gives the beep sounds. Everithing works ok here. fine.

Now on the client (which has no soundcard) I play an mp3 with mpg123 and
it says:

"<snipped mpg123 no warranty stuff>
/dev/dsp: No such device
/dev/dsp: No such device
/dev/dsp: No such device
audio: No such device"

still seems normal for it can't detect a soundcard

Then on client I do a

root# export ESPEAKER=server:11112

and then again some mpg123, but then it returns:

"<snipped mpg123 no warranty stuff>
audio: Connection refused"

so mpg123 picks up the ESPEAKER env var, but it is refused, while the
port is made public (the -public switch on esd). Whatever I try, giving
192.168.15.100, server or server.tijmen.tn as host, ar trying other
ports (off course with esd too), it still refuses the connection.
the tails of /var/log/messages on both pc's are clean...

What could be the problem and how do I solve it???

p.s. please mail me too, because i might miss the last messages, for I'm

Thanks in advance,

This is a loaded question and will get plenty of responses. The best way
is to see which flavor has the best support for your system and what you
want to use it for. Once installed "linux is linux" basically.

It is more like a choice of ice-cream.
What flavor do you like???

Linux is freedom of choice!!
I like RedHat.

The 'p' means keep the same permissions. I have neva
used this. YMMV. 'v' means verbose, it lists all the
file in the tarbol on screen. I hate it.

Er, nope. I assumed you installed Mandrake from cd.
If you did, you should have the kernel source on it.
If you go to rufus (http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/),
you should find kernel-source-2.2.16-9mdk.i586.rpm.

There are different kernel files. Check out
Rufus and you will see them.

There is already a device /proc/bus/pci/... that provides this
for programatic use, and a set of command-line utilities to go
along with it. Look for lspci and setpci.

Somewhere there's a Linux PCI mailing list you might want to
join...

Can someone fill me in on the status of support for large files?

For reasons that are too involved to go into here, I need to
be able to treat an 8-900GB raw partition as a file, but that
size is a little above the typical 32-bit byte offset limit
for fseek and mmap...

My question here is what RAID towers would anyone recommend? I've worked

and worked well with Linux... Any recommendations would be greatly

Subject: Can't restart Win98 box in DOS after Linux install
Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 16:43:59 -0500

We have a Win98 machine and installed Redhat a few days ago. Since the
install we can't restart our computer in DOS. When you try (via 'Start' -
'Shut Down' - 'Restart computer in DOS'), the computer shuts down, but when
it comes back up, it goes nowhere. A blue box appears near the middle of
the screen, and you can carraige return, but it never actually loads DOS (or
anything for that matter).

Thought this might have something to do with LILO, so we uninstalled today
to do a partitionless install (hence no LILO - boot from floppy). We
deleted the Linux partitions and did a fdisk/mbr to clear the LILO info from
the Master Boot Record. Computer seems to be back to normal (haven't
reinstalled partitionless yet), except we still can't restart in DOS. Of
course our Win98 startup disk works, but we shouldn't need that to get into
DOS.

Any suggestions (other that reinstalling Windows)?

OK, this is driving me nuts. Is raid-5 broken in the stock 2.2.16 kernel?
This is not root-raid, just plain data raid.... I am trying to compile a
stock 2.2.16 kernel, with raid-5 support.

I've tried compiling in to the kernel, modules, everything I can think of.

No matter what I do, it tells me my raid array built under RH 2.2.14 using
raidtools 0.9, is not a mirror or raid-1 array.

I've even tried to blow away the array and rebuild - no dice. tells me
that /dev/md0 is not a valid device.

/proc/mdstat has some really weird stuff in there about md0, md1 md2, and
md3.

The array comes up fine under 2.2.14.....

What's up? What am I missing? Has anyone got this working?

cdrecord -v -speed=4 -dev=3,0 filename.iso
where speed is the speed of your writer ( 4x in the above) dev is the scsi
device number of the writer (3,0 in the above) filename.iso is the iso file
which is to be placed on the cdrom ( made with mkisofs)

There is no single best distribution. A lot of it's a matter of personal

Subject: Corrupted PASSWD, SHADOW, GROUP files
Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 22:15:38 GMT

I have inherited a web server that has been through about 5 years of
trauma. It has several hundred public_html style web sites for users,
about 100 Virtual hosts, and several thousand users. (All internet, not
used for login or anything, just for authenticating user's ftping)

Security is handled by radius on a different machine.

My goal is to move everything to a new webserver.

Here is my plan (with no solution)

PWCK flat out freaks out. Hundreds, if not a thousand or more errors.
We don't want all users to have /home/username dirs, but that seems to
be a built in requirement.

The GROUP file is a mess. Initially all users were a member of the USERS
group. Then, about a year and a half ago, each subsequent NEW user
would become a member of the username group. (fredflnt would be a member
of the fredflint group)

For ease of management, I believe I would like everyone to be a member
of ONLY the USERS group.

I would like to reconcile the PASSWD and SHADOW file with eachother.

I do have a valid and completely clean radius USERS file which contains
(only) the username, password, and other normal radius info which is
uselss for this excercise.

I could write a script (perhpas) to match up, and create a new file
containing the Real Name to go along with the useranme and passwd.

I might even get lucky and figure out how to put the required
.home.username/./html portion in their.

Has anyone ever heard of a util, script whatver, that will make this a
little more manageble and realiztic for me?

Pointers towards FAQ's, good books that go more indepth than the man
page of PWCK, would be very much appreicated. Links to the utils, or
even rough guesses where to search for such a beast would be greatly
appreciated.

It's been a long time since I used Samba. But I suspect the problems
you're having are Samba "access permissions", not Linux filesystem
permissions. You need to look at your Samba configuration files.

PS, the "A" attribute in Win98 is the "archive" attribute, not having
to do with access.
