What format? Microsoft's .ASF format? From what I'd understood, they hadn't
released the specs.

Slackware is excellent for this. It doesn't hide anything with gui
applications. This is the system I use and I learned it exactly as
you describe above. I've also tried RedHat and found that it wasn't to my
liking. Slackware will definitely fulfill your needs.

Subject: audio on cdrom?
Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 02:55:00 GMT
Hi all --
OK, so I've got Redhat 6 installed & running. Now how do I make the CD
player play music? I've used the mount -a command and the CDROM makes
the expected mechanical noises, and the CD player utility registers
tracks & play time, etc., but no music comes out. Sound card works fine
when the machine is booted on the win OS.
I've read the HOWTO at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CDROM-HOWTO.html,
but I'm still scratching my head.
Any ideas?
Thanks for all help,

If you're getting bored then why are you even bothering? Either linux

What troulbe do you get trying to add the ATAPI tape drive?
I had no trouble adding the HP Colorado 20M ATAPI EIDE tape drive
to a system running RedHat 6.1 (2.2.12-20). I suspect your trouble
may not with the kernel. I would think that SuSE would have no trouble
when adding that drive using kernel 2.2.14.

Any idea for the best free VCD player ?
I used xreadvcd to play the VCD CDROM. It is good but cannot play VCD from a *.dat
file.
Also, I used vcdkutter to cut part of the VCD image from a VCD file.
