There are several GUI SMB/CIFS access tools for Linux. For instance,
Corel Linux includes one; there's LinNeighborhood
(http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/), Kruiser
(http://devel-home.kde.org/~kruiser/), and xSMBrowser
(http://www.public.iastate.edu/~chadspen/). All of these tools, however,
mount the remote filesystem, then browse to it. AFAIK, the only way to
access a remote SMB/CIFS filesystem WITHOUT mounting it is to use the
text-mode smbclient program, which comes with Samba. This tool has an
interface that's quite similar to that of the traditional text-mode ftp
client.

Is this a contest to see who can got the most things wrong in one small
paragraph? If, so, I guess you win. Linux DOES run on a Mac. The
traditional Unix machine was not a mainframe but rather a minicomputer. Unix
only came to mainframes much later. Linux was not ported to the PC with a
mainframe in mind. It was originally written for the PC and later ported to
other platforms. Mainframe Linux is one off the more recent additions. I
have Linux running on my Thinkpad and my Aptiva. I installed Linux on a
12-way S/390 G6. And the guy down the hall from me has it running on an
RS/6000. All work very nicely and I can move programs between them with only
a recompile needed. If that is not "platform independence" them I don't know
what is.

Hi Jimmy,
think I understood the issue. In fact, there are two different ones:
1.- You cannot use kppp as a regular user, just as root
kppp must be setuid as root because it has to run pppd which has to be run with
root permisions. Anyway is strange that the kppp default setup doesn't work
properly
2.- You use "su" command or login in Xwindow as root and try to run kppp.
It's really fucking strange the Xserver message you receive, normally this kind
of messages appear when you connect (for instance) to your localhost with
telnet and tries to run a program without enable the remote X connections (with
xhost +).
I suggest to try this (as I have no extra ideas about the problem):
1- Login as root and start X
2- Enable remote X connections (xhost +)
3- From an xterm or whatever other terminal, try to run any X client in display
0 ( xman -display 0.0 &). With this approach you can determine if your session
is running in display 0, screen 0. Otherwise you have to determine which
display and screen are using, but anothe posibility is force X to start up in a
given display (startx -- 0.0)
4- If you have success, then try to start kppp
Hope this help. Good luck Jimmy

Hi-
I've been using freewwweb for quite a while now - but as of this
morning, they're officially dead. Bought off by Juno. The announcement
at http://home.freewwweb.com says that you have to use a juno account
from now on, however, Juno uses windows-only dialup software a la
netzero, with an ads bar you're supposed to "interact" with, and they
specifically mention NOT supporting Linux.
So, I was wondering, what other free ISPs compatible with Linux are
there? I know Worldspy was also bought by Juno. I'm specifically
interested in having a local dial-up number in the NYC area. TIA,

From: truetech <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I am trying to use cu to access my router on serial port 1 (ie
ttyS0).
However, when I issue the command cu -s 9600 -l /dev/ttyS0 it
returns to say
permission denied and line is in use.
I 've tried checking what process could be holding the port by
using
ps -aux, but all I see is processes with a ? under the tty
column.
I am logged in as root and the device (ttyS0) is owned by root
with
permissions crw---------
I tried lsmod and can't see any serial device module.
Unfortunately, I don't
know what the module is, so that I can load it manually.
However, using lsof /dev/ttyS* shows that there are no serial
ports open.
HELP please!

partition, 64M Ram, ATI Rage 128 Video Card, Winmodem, USB port, 17"

During installation I clicked the relevant info (monitor, vid-card,

delivers this message...
Couldn't Load

I've tried changing the parameters offered (moitor, vid card, etc) but I
don't seem to be getting anywhere, each time it just throws up the same kind

Prior to Mandrake, I tried Red Hat which basically reacted in the same way,
refusing to launch X windows.
If anybody can help or point me in the right direction, I would be very

Not that strange! When you start an Xserver as root, then do another "login"
with the su command, the second process does not know anything about an Xserver
running. after the su, you have to "export DISPLAY=:0". If you're using
Xwrapper, it doesn't like that. So you have to go a step further. Say your
machine is named "dilbert". After root has started the Xserver, root needs to
"xhost +dilbert", which allows any connection from the host "dilbert" to the
Xserver. Then, after you su, "export DISPLAY=dilbert:0". Now you can launch
xterm or any other appl in that window, and make the connection.

Try to append a line: "mem=396M" in the general section of
/etc/lilo.conf, then rerun lilo. A 2.2.x kernel shouldn't need this, but
there are some motherboards with buggy BIOS where you have to do it.
