You make sure that either you have your root partition (/) entirely
below cylinder 1024, or have a /boot partition that is entirely below
cylinder 1024.

How is your system partitioned? How big is the disk? What is its
geometry?

The 'default' of making one big partition will cause you problems if the
disk is big enough (~> 500meg usually) to have more than 1024 cylinders.
The normal stratagy is to make multiple partitions, starting with a
'small' root or boot partition. For a system with a separate /var
partition (recommended for 24/7 boxes, and any box which is a mail, news,
or print server), root itself need only be 64meg, root+/var need only be
128meg. /boot is fine as 5-10 meg. This should be the *first*
partition as close to the beginning of the disk as possible (right after
a MS-* C: partition, if you must have one or starting at cylinder 1).
After this (in no particular order): 128meg for swap, 1.5-2 gig for
/usr, 64meg for /var (if not part of the root partition), optional
/var/spool/lpd, /var/spool/mail, and /var/spool/news, with the rest set
aside for things like a MS-* D: (or E:) drive, /home, /scratch, etc.

What kind of tape drive?

If SCSI, then /dev/st0 (/dev/nst0).
If IDE,  then /dev/ht0 (/dev/nht0).
If Floppy, then /dev/rft0 (/dev/nrft0).

Don't bet on it! Older, smaller disks < 8 GB (and > 500meg) *may* have
more then 1024 cylinders. Older (ISA) SCSI controllers will create
fake CHS's with C > 1024 for disks as small as 1 gig. Over 8 gig,
disks will ALWAYS have more than 1024 cylinders, even with LBA support
(due to maxing out head and sector counts).

Netzero just uses normal PPP. You need to run the silly MS-Windows
sign-up hack, but once you have 'signed up', you can use a normal Linux
PPP connection to hook up with Netzero. Yes, it bypasses their ads
bar, but I have not noticed that they know, care, or check to make sure
your are running their ads bar hack -- I use Netzero from time to time
(when my local ISP is busy, etc.) -- I friend set me up (I don't have
MS-Windows myself).

Yep. Worked fine by following VMware's instructions--nothing special. I was

check you system bios, many of the new machines have it power saving on

Your current configuration data is saved in /usr/src/linux/.config if you
have already compiled your kernel once on this system.

What changes do you want to make?

Your not suppose to but I sometimes had edit this fine and do a
 `make oldconfig` to have it make sure no other info is needed.

I'm trying to connect to a MS SQL Server 7 from a PHP script on a

I've installed freeTDS and compiled PHP with support for Sybase. But
when I try to run a query I get the error message: "The

When I check the error_log for Apache I find this:

So obviously theres something very wrong...

I'm using PHP 4.0.1pl2, Apache 1.3.12-14, freeTDS 0.50, MS SQL Server

I compiled PHP with the option: --with-sybase=/usr/local/freetds

The script I'm testing with is this:

<?
mssql_connect("hostname", "username", "password") or die ("feil");
mssql_select_db("dbname") or die ("feil");
$sql = "select * from tabell";
$result = mssql_query($sql) or die ("feil");

$data = mssql_fetch_array($result);
?>

If I comment the last line, I dont get the error message and there is
no new entries in the error_log.

There were no error massages when I compiled Apache or PHP.
