Because you don't have your Corel CD in the drive.

That would be the simplest solution. Putting your Corel CD in the drive
should also work. You've probably already got everything you want off the
CD, though.

hdparm is for DRIVES not partitions. Try using /dev/hda and /dev/hdb
with no numbers on the end.

Lew,

Im using the S3 Virge with 4 Mb ram (an STB Nitro3D card). I find it to
be a terrific chipset and i have had no problems. I have used the svga
server, not the special s3v xserver.

Try setting up X by using xf86config or XF86Setup. Choose the SVGA
X server, and manually specify your monitor with the sync frequencies you
mention before.

You may also want to look at the documentation on S3virge at
www.xfree86.org.

If you still have problems, email me and I'll send you a copy of my
XF86Config file.

Ah. Now I see. Either one of those sounds possible. I thought he wanted a

I have just check out the apc's web site. They do have PowerChute software (for
Linux) for download. I just got myself a BACK UPS 500 MC few days ago... I will
try the software after I got the cable... Hopt it is not too hard to configure
(with RPM for RedHat6.1).

no I can not boot into Windows. I was able to boot into linux and access
the windows partition before, but now I can't do that. The partition won't
boot. I believe this is because OnTrack offset my drive with 63 sectors and
Linux is looking at the wrong place.

linux was installed before I had the large HD. There's nothing on the large
HD, it was supposed to be secondary.

Software tells me there's nothing to Uninstall there.

Anybody know how I can mount that partition with a 63 sectors offset??

So you've got to compile the driver? Interesting. The 8390 code is
support code for "ne"-type NICs. You probably already have a compiled
module for it on your system. The header file (8390.h) is actually
in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net, assuming you have kernel sources, or
at least kernel headers installed.

Armed with this knowledge, I'm not sure what I'd do next. I hope you
have instructions from SMC.

Given that you installed X with support for 800x600 you can do:
CTRL+ALT+grey +/- to circle through your resolutions. If you
permenantly want to use 800x600 you change that in your X config file
(mine is /etc/X11/XF86Config)

in the Screen section change (something like):

Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection

to (something like) so that your default value is the first one:
Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "800x600" "640x480" "1024x768"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection

IF I remember correctly.

Now, seriously - that is really an interesting question.
It would indicate that Linux is changing. Is going mainstream.
Think about it, NetNanny for Linux! Porting censorware into censorware

   sleep 15

But this is probably not the best way to start ppp-dependant
processes.
Instead, put your squid startup in the /etc/ppp/ip-up script (You can
put the corresponding shutdown in /etc/ppp/ip-down). /etc/ppp/ip-up is
executed by the ppp daemon once the IP connection has been established
between your system and the remote system, making it ideal for
performing IP-dependant startups.

A "start up" script, perhaps?

In english.....

if the file "/usr/loca/squid/bin/squid" exists, then
echo the text "Squid" to the console, without a newline, and
run the program /usr/local/squid/bin/squid in background

man sh -.

man ash -'

man test (for the '[' command)

Boot with a DOS or windoz boot disk and at the A: prompt enter "fdisk
/MBR" and then reboot. That will remove lilo from the master boot record
and put it back to a DOS style MBR.

One thing to watch out for is the waveshape of the power comming from
the UPS (while on battery). If it isn't a pretty good sine wave, it
can fool some meters into reading an incorrect voltage. I suspect you
are more apt to see this on the lower-end devices (both low-end UPS's
and low end meters).

My experience with APC devices has been very good. The only way I can
tell there has been a power problem while I was out of the room is an
entry in the PowerChute log. This is with a pair of SmartUPs 1400's,
supporting two 233MHz AMD K6 boxes, a 400MHz K6, a 700MHz Athlon, an
SB-180 CP/M box, and other minor stuff.

If I can remember to do so, I'll hang an oscillicope across an old
BackUps 400 at work and see what happens.

Hi,

This is a clue... It would seem that when you install a RedHat
Workstation some server applications do not get installed and the ftp
server is one of them. That said I did a 'custom' installation of RH6.1
and didn't get the server either - Ho-Hum.

Your config files are correct, check to see if the ftp server package is
installed (rpm -q wu-ftpd). If not then install it from the CD or get it
from Rufus (http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM).

If you want root ftp access and can live with the security implications
then remove the root entry from /etc/ftpusers

Subject: enter www from behind firewall

At the company where I work my computer is behind
a firewall. Under Windows it is possible for me
to enter the World Wide Web, but when I try to
run Netscape under Linux and do the same I get stuck.
The same happens when I try to ftp. How can I solve
this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Nicolette
