Hi i am trying to get my RTL8029 pci card to work under linux (mandrake 7.1)
from some reason i can't get it work.

i downloaded and installed the updated ne2k_pci driver from realtek but
when i try to do insmod ne2k_pci.o it gives me something like that:

unresolved symbol ei_open/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o:
unresolved symbol ethdev_init/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o:

unresolved symbol ei_interrupt/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o:
unresolved symbol NS8390_init/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o:
unresolved symbol ei_close/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o:
unresolved symbol pci_drv_register

what should i do?

as i know there have to be no problem regarding that NIC under linux

really? i am using redhat 6.2 and get

euler(jk)$ file /etc/passwd
/etc/passwd: ASCII text

> This, to me, is indicative of the haphazard

this, to me, is a perfect illustration of the fundamentally bogus
nature of the vast bulk of accusations against redhat. redhat does
have problems, do us the favor of levelling competant criticism
instead of making stuff up off the top of your head.

like the way file is just a guesser and ultimately broken on *every*
unix system?

file is not the most important utility on a unix system. since you
are just blowing smoke, why not make up stuff about a more important
component?

this is very dissappointing as i would have though that people test
their accusations before flinging them.

> Slackware (or Debian) so much. Attention to detail.

sadly, i guess this is not the case. i am now reminded of why i feel
there is a certain small but vocal subset of slackware and debian who
use a religious conviction of their distribution's alledged
superiority to justify any amount of misinformation, slander and lying
to bolster their position. there really are a lot of decent slackware
users. why do you insist on giving them a bad name?

> [ Thank you for listening to my rant! ]

i think your rant says more about you, than it says about any system
you are trying to malign.

Does this hold true for the Toshiba Portege 7100 series? I would think not,
but if anybody has any clues, I would appreciate it. RH 6.2 runs, but I get
no X, and no networking (almost got the networking licked). Looks like it
uses Cyberblade for the video, but still can't get X-Wndows to work
successfully.

I added to "lilo.conf" just to be sure

     append="memory=128M"

I have 128 meg that is actually recognized. ( include the quotes)

The filesystem should make no difference at all; I've installed many
RPMs from VFAT-formatted ZIPs. The fact that the files appear different
while using "diff" bothers me, though. You didn't mention which kernel
version you're using, but kernels 2.2.[1-5] had subtle problems with ZIP
drives that could cause data corruption. Upgrade your kernel if you are
using one of those versions.

your linuxsystem resides on multiple paritions. just type mount and youll
see something like this:

/dev/hda3 on / type ext2 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/hda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw)
/dev/hda5 on /home type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/hda7 on /var type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/hda8 on /tmp type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/hda9 on /opt type ext2 (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
/dev/hdc2 on /mnt type ext2 (rw)

with df -h you can see how much space is still left on the partitions.

you can now move data from an old partition to a new partition by mounting
the new partition on a temporary mountpoint and copy all the data (use cp
with the -d -p -R options) and then change /etc/fstab from the old to the
new partition and then dont forget to delete the old content.

or you can mount your new partitions just into the filesystem.
example: /home is mounted on hda6 now. and you want to keep it, but move
/home/john to the new partition hdb8. Just copy the content of /home/john
and set a new mountpoint in fstab for /dev/hdb8 on /home/john

partitioning the new disk is done with fsdisk and then you have to create
a new filesystem with mke2fs (or mkreiserfs if you use reiserfs).

hope this helps

I think what our semiliterate friend meant to say was
edit the lilo.config and then rerun lilo as root.

Now while I'm not familiar with Mandrake itself, I
can say that most distributions allow you to do this
operation from within their install routines; SuSE
for example has a "modify boot configuration" panel
in its YaST routine. Mandrake presumably has the
equivalent. Otherwise, just edit the lilo.config
manually to set the default OS and the delay, then
post editing run lilo to load your modified
configuration. As always when fiddling with Linux's
boot configuration, make sure you have a
bootdisk ready so that in the unlikely event something
goes wrong and your system fails to boot with its
modification, you can boot your installed system from the
bootdisk and take a second stab at editing the lilo.config

Cheers,

Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 20:27:28 +0200

Hi all,
I've just grabbed the latest stable kernel version (i.e. 2.2.16). I've
configured (properly?), compiled, and installed it. It's running fine,
except for two annoying issues:
        a) When booting up, depmod complains of undefined symbols in several
modules. I suppose it's due to a missing module-file, but how to
generate that file? I have set on the three options for "Loadable module
support", namely: "Enable loadable module support", "Set version
information in all symbols for modules", and "Kernel module loader".
Then make dep, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install.
Finally, copy bzImage and System.map to /boot, adding entries to
lilo.conf, and executing lilo.
So can you tell me what am
I missing?
        b) The second issue is a minor detail. When 'halt' is commanded,
everything is done all right except the last step, namely, actually
powering down the machine. I don't know why because the BIOS does
support the programmed power down and the previous kernel (2.2.14) did
power down the machine.
        Thanks for your help.

        Cheers!

        Jos Manuel

No such thing.

Extensions are an artifact of systems like OS/360 and CP/M and
such.

Unix, on which Linux is based, has filenames.

If you think that there's some suffix at the end of the filenames
that you use to be vaguely suggestive of what format the file
_might_ use, well, it is common for "file managers" to have some
way of indicating pattern matching.

You might enter something like "*.html" to match all the HTML files,
for instance.
