Have you tried to remove the user with "userdel"? Removing a user from a
system is more than "playing" with /etc/passwd.

Indeed. Some of my coworkers use Outlook, and I always cringe
when I read the wrong/contradictory/meaningless timezone
information that it attaches. (E.g., despite the fact that
Daylight Saving time is in effect right now, it insists on
claiming that the US Pacific time zone is 8 hours behind UTC
for current times.)
> i let windows think i live in greenwich

Tell it you live in Casablanca, Morocco. Since 1986, Morocco
has been continuously running at a zero offset from UTC, and
because of the Bogart/Bacall movie it seems like a more
entertaining lie. Or perhaps you'd prefer to "live" in
Timbuktu, Mali? (Timbuktu has been at GMT+0/UTC+0 since 1912.)
(Countries in the western bulge of Africa have a tendency to run
at UTC+0, and countries in the tropics tend to not observe any
form of daylight saving time, so a map of the west coast of
Africa can give you some other ideas as to where you could "live"
while you use windoze.)

Anyone knows how can I setup additional procedures when creating an user
account? Scripts maybe?
I want to be able to create folder and symbolic links for the new user I
add so they can start creating their own web pages once I create their
account?
For example, I have my apache document root at /usr/local/apache/htdocs
and I want to be able to create subfolder under the document root using
the user login id and give them the rights to access their web folder.
Then I also want to create a symbolic link, linking their web folder to
their own directory for easy access.
I hope I make it clear. Can anyone help me? TIA

I do have PNP OS set to NO in BIOS. One other thing-I have "IRQ3 used by
ISA" set up to YES since I disabled one of my com ports in BIOS and used
IRQ3 for an internal hardware modem. This worked for windows but I don't
know if it will work for Linux.
The problem is that one of the nics is getting set up with the same irq
as my video card-irq 11. The nic's support irq sharing but things are
not functioning right because in kde control center TCP tab I can only
set up one of the cards eth0-the other does not appear.
A second problem is probably debian specific. When I edit
/etc/modutils/aliases with:
alias eth0 3c59x
alias eth1 3c59x
then run 'update-modules' my conf.modules gets rebuilt like this:
alias eth0 3c59x
alias eth1 3c59xpath[boot]=/lib/modules
These lines are inserted before the path lines like:
path[net]=/lib/modules/`uname -r`
Which is probably why update-modules adds a path to my alias line but is
it readable by the kernel with no space between the 3c59x & path?
Thanks for help with any of the above,

Hi,
I need to define "postmaster" in /etc/alias and I noticed that it is
already defined to be "root":
--- /etc/aliases
postmaster: root
mailer-daemon: postmaster
---
The comments in /etc/aliases (SuSE 6.3) say that "postmaster" is a
"basic alias" which "must" be present.
So I wonder what "postmaster" is needed for by the system and I also
noticed that "mailer-daemon" is aliased as "postmaster".
What if I redefine "postmaster" to some other addresses. Will my mail
daemon stop working? Should I replace "mailer-daemon: postmaster" with
"mailer-daemon: root" to get back the original configuration for
"mailer-daemon" while freeing "postmaster" for my own uses?
Thanks,
Markus

Lm_sensors uses the raw data from the sensors. The BIOS is using a
factor to compensate for the slight physical distance between the sensor
and the chip. At least, that's how I understand it. I tried to adjust my
sensors.conf so that it match the BIOS.

' No, really I'm serious. There are two types of IDE cables. The original
' 40 conductor type, which are good up to UDMA-33, and the new 80
' conductor, yet 40 pin ones. Don't ask me why it has 80 conductors if it
' only has 40 pins, since I don't know.
'
' I have one of each type of cables in my hand right now. The UDMA-66 has
' much thinner conductors on it's ribbon section. There are also a total
' of 80 of them. The UDMA-33 cable has thicker conductors and there are
' only 40 of them. The shape and size of each plug on the cables is
' identical, 40-pins with a key.
I knew about the 40 wire vs the 80 wire thing. Another difference is
that the UDMA-66 cables have a blue connector at the end that gets
plugged into the controler.
The thing that gets me is that the cables I bought _are_ UDMA-66
cables with the blue connector and the 80 wires, but they do not have
a visible cut.
As to the doubling of the wires, I can only guess that it has
something to do with capacitance/impedance matching.
Why the industry doesn't switch over to firewire, or something similar
that doesn't require paying Apple a huge license fee if that is the
problem is something that bothers me too. Those damn ribbon cables
are just too rigid and fragile for my taste. The connectors are no
dream either. It's really past time better cabling was made available
for high speed data transfer.

There's something out there called "Serial ATA" that will theoretically
use something similar to Firewire to shovel data at blinding speeds.
Implementation is still a ways off, since for it to be widely accepted,
motherboard manufacturers would have to put connectors and electronics
on all their new boards. Then the hard drive manufacturers have to
switch over. It will happen eventually, but don't hold your breath...

The RFC's that define the SMTP email standard require that the
email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] must reach
a real live person who shuld be the person that is running the
email services for the domain.
It is perfectly possible to change this alias to point to your
personal account (I do it, look at my return address!). In fact
doing this is probably closer to what the RFC wants than leaving
it pointing to root.
Actually, I do have postmaster aliased to root, but root is aliased
to my real account, so it has the same effect.

Where is this "TCP tab" in the KDE Control Center? I'm using KDE 1.1.2,
and there's nothing like that anywhere. Also, the video card does not
require an IRQ--there should be an option somewhere in the BIOS to
disable its getting an IRQ if you're worried about that. Windoze
doesn't even complain if the video card doesn't get an IRQ.
Can you do an "ifconfig eth1 192.168.111.12 up" and get something
besides an error message? If so, your card is OK.

Just edit /etc/conf.modules directly and don't bother with
"update-modules".

In your httpd.conf:
UserDir public_html
will allow users to create pages in their own ~/public_html directories.
Is there a reason why you aren't doing this to begin with? On a big
multi-user system, it makes more sense to keep all the files owned by
user1 under ~user1.
If you're dead set on doing things the way you described above, do this:
#!/bin/bash
# call this with a username as an argument
mkdir /usr/local/apache/htdocs/$1
chown $1.users /usr/local/apache/htdocs/$1
ln -s /usr/local/apache/htdocs/$1 /home/$1/public_html
