Subject: Can't run pppd as a background process
Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2000 07:37:21 GMT
Hi.
I've been experimenting with a couple of Linux PPC distributions on my
home machine. I just switched from Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) Champion
Server 1.1 to SuSE 6.4 PPC. The script file to start a ppp session I
used with YDL works as foreground process but I can't seem to get it to
work as background process. If I start a ppp session (as root), the
second I close the xterm or logout, the session is dropped. What is
going on? With YDL, I could start the process as root and then work as
a regular user without keeping an extra terminal window around. Also, I
get a lot of messages from pppd when it's running--something I didn't
experience with YDL. I made sure there was no -v flag anywhere, yet I
still see the messages even when invoked with the ampersand.
I'd appreciate any help in this matter.
Thanks,
Hugo

Can't stand someone pointing out your mistakes?
There is no excuse for not making a backup of important data. Even if
it means buying another hard drive or even another computer to back up
onto.
If the data isn't that important then what's your problem? In any case
it's your choice whether to backup or not. Did you make the right
choice?

Hi,
Your English is better than my Spanish ;-)
.raw files can be written by xcdroast
(http://www.fh-muenchen.de//home/ze/rz/services/projects/xcdroast/e_overview.html)
- but I suspect it might be a .iso file and could probably be written by
any CD package that can do this (you may have to rename the file to
<name>.iso.
On a Linux box, try 'file <name>.raw' to see if that gives any clues.

Hi guys,
I have this problem for while but could not figure out a solution ... I
can only startx as "root" from one of my RH6.2 box. Any other user will
get "auth failed" message when they tried to start X server. It would not
work even if I deleted .Xauthurity from the user's home directory. Even
as root, the start is pretty slow and there were MIT-MAGIC-COOKIES-1
errors on the console screen.
I was told that it is likely to be a network related problem. But I really
cannot figure out what went wrong. Any suggestions?

We use Red Hat Linux 6.1 and Windoze NT on a dual boot machine. We have the
C: drive as FAT32 (not NTFS). The local mail directory of netscape in Linux
is set to be /mnt/c_drive/Program Files/netscape/Users/blah/blah/mail (of
course C: is mounted at /mnt/c_drive read-write) and the local mail
directory of netscape in NT is set to be C:\Program Files\... etc. In this
way, we can read the mails from both the OSs.
Hope this be of some help,
Kousik.

Mandrake and Red Hat are becoming different enough that it might be a
good idea to consider them as totally separate (if largely compatible)
distributions.

I think that this means that you _are_ a very visual person: you can
visualize what you want and easily translate it into symbolic form. Those
who require WYSIWIG are not very visual at all: they cannot imagine what
the thing will look like and so must have the computer show them.

Yes, I have tried the "-l" option, it does not make it compatable enough

Ok....
Let's make this simple, 'cause it really doesn't have to be difficut.
The NETGEAR RT311, and, in fact, all NETGEAR's RT series, hold multiple IP
addresses. There's one assigned to the WAN port (the port connected to the wall
to the outside world), and one assigned to the ethernet port.
Telnet to the RT311, and give it a static, private IP (say,
192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0) and assign your eth0 another IP on that same subnet
(say, 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0) The default route/gateway on your machine's eth0
should point to the RT's ethernet IP address.
While you're in there, set up NAT, and DCHP on the WAN port, and you should be
good to go.
Hope this helps.

Not to mention the replacement for cron that can catch up with jobs it
missed while the computer was turned off...

GOD I hope not... KDE is big and bloaty enough as it is...
But at least WE have a choice to use something else... fvwm95 in my case...

It's supposed to be this way. Let the kernel grab the memory and do what it
sees fit with it. This is the way unix works (in general). This is not to
say that you shouldn't recompile your kernel and make some things in to
modules, just don't be alarmed that all the "free" memory is used by the
"system." Free memory is bad -- let the kernel have it and decide what to
do with it. If a 16mb machine has, say, 10mb free then the kernel isn't
doing it's job. With only 16mb you should have some swap configured. How
much depends on what kinds of things you run.
This question has been asked hundreds of times on the linux groups since
I've been reading them. There's no problem here from what you've described.
It's normal. Here's part of the 'top' output from a Solaris 2.5.1 machine I
have here:
130 processes: 128 sleeping, 1 running, 1 on cpu
Cpu states: 93.8% idle, 4.0% user, 2.2% kernel, 0.0% iowait, 0.0% swap
Memory: 62M real, 6224K free, 83M swap, 94M free swap
Notice how little "free" memory there is. Let the kernel have it.

But the machine itself may be sold old (and probably is) that IBM will no
longer support it, no matter what OS you run, even AIX, and I think all
versions of AIX below 4.1.5(?) are also out of support but I don't know for
sure. Of course, given enough incentive ($) they will probably support
anything. If the machine was new in 1992 chances are it's no longer
officially supported.
