after work, i noticed a couple of oranges hanging around my car's
tires. i ran that fucking shit RIGHT over.
stopped the car, and decided to take a cab home. the cabbie was
dripping. perhaps, my thought process went, i needed a tire iron to

afghans. one particular green knit glared at me when i handed it off

throat was bleeding.
my pillow slapped me in the face, my alarm shook me.

First off, Thanks for all that responded to my post. UPDATE.. Well, first
off Bill it looks like I have one com port and one lpt.. So I haven't gone
into BIOS yet.. FWIW.. I get a "modem is busy" report when I try to get the
modem to respond from KDE using the Kppp app. (luck of all luck.. I have no
cu manual page(s)....... Bob..I have named the device ttyS0.. I have given
the command to the modem of +++ATZ and just ATZ . I did go out on the net
and get the longer init string but have not used it as of yet.
I did discover the /proc/ dir and got a listing for ioports and interrupts.
Someone did ask if I worked from the console or from X. Well, I start at the
console then go to windoz and will work from both.. I would rather use a
command line and rock and roll ..
Okay, I am going to go back into Linux and look. I thought I saw that
something was using IRQ 4.
Question: is 03F8h (info from Win 95) the same as ioports regestry given by
/proc/..
without the "h". As a point of interest, the closest thing I have addressing
03Fx is 03F6-03F6 for ide0 (assuming that would be the HD)
Still, the point here is to get on the net via Linux and this 33.6 ext.
BTW.. Bill... When I run a 12 page report form SYS and Hardware Devices all
I show is a COM 1 and an LPT 1... I have yanked all cards from the machine
except for sound an video (which are hardwired on the board.
Thanks for the help ya'll.

Try running top to see what programs are running.
I remember my harddisk was thrashing for no reason, with top I still don't
know why but I know what was running
The process was "slocate".

So, sometime between July 13 and now, the /usr/lib/fax/faxgetty

libraries? permissions on /dev/ttyS1? upgrade to the kernel?

If you're using Vim:
In command mode:
set ff=unix
You get rid of a lot of 'nasty' dos/window sh*t.

Appart from the tr, col, dos2unix etc utilities, vim has an option
to do the convertion.
Use either
:set fileformat=unix if you want to save in unix format (no <CR>)
:set fileformat=dos if you want to save in dos format (with <CR>)

Well, does it *really* leaves your keyboard unusable? Even if the response
is slow, can you open a console (say have a xterm ready) and use the
command "top" to find out who is the culprit? BTW, does this happen every
time you fire up netscape, or does this happen on certain time of a day
(though this question sounds silly, but I have caught "locate" or "find"
red-handed many times)?
Hope this helps you slightly,
Kousik.

Unlike Windows, DOS can't live on virtual directories, so dosemu has
to provide it whole virtual disks. Seems the original poster didn't
have that or it isn't defined in dosemu.conf .

i had to use the NFS install for my sony laptop as it does not have a
built in cdrom and the pcmcia dvd couldn't be recognized as a cdrom. So
i chose the nfs install and it asked for the ip address of the nfs
server and i entered that info and i think it asked for soem more info.
I also had to learn real fast how to export filesystems from the nfs
server which was a computer that i had just installed linux on with an
nfs server configuraiton just a couple hours beforehand.

Heh, that's like saying if you choose a pentium optimised kernel the whole
distro is pentium optimised.
The majority (everything apart from the kernel) of SuSE, even 6.4, is
compiled for i386 (or ppc, apx etc) and does not use 3dnow. The kernel
doesn't do enough maths for the 3dnow patch to make a significant
difference. If you want 3dnow support in packages that will make real use of
it you need to recompile them yourself (things like xmms/mpg123 spring to
mind).
The kernel is optimised for it, everything else isn't.

I have an ACER with a NeoMagic 128ZV+ and 800x600 LCD
screen. This was not recognised properly by Slackware 3.6 or
redhat 5.2, and ran only in 640x480, which was pretty awful.
I got a replacement SVGA X-server, and config file from
somwhere out there (sorry - I can't remember where), and
this worked. However I have now put in a recent Corel Linux,
and this worked straight off the CD.
The SVGA driver (dated 1998) was patched, and I expect the
patch has now become part of the release. If you need it and
can't find it email me, and I will send it.
Good luck

A friend of mine tried hard to get a sb 128 pci working (linux). Both
cards he tried came along with a ES 1373 chip. No success, both cards
doesn't work. He tried kernel/OSS drivers 1370 and 1371 as well as the
ALSA driver. The kernel module loads, but syslog says "frequency
converter timeout" afair. The ALSA driver also loads but he got no sound
