Subject: Which firewall technique/product does this best?
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 11:04:59 GMT
Hi,
I'm soon getting ADSL (with a fixed IP) and will use a
PPro200/128MB/RedHat 6.2 machine to run my http, ftp and mail server
(cancelling my web hotel to run it myself). I also want to set this
machine, my public machine, up as a firewall to protect the other PCs
that I use (my private net). Can someone recommend me which firewall
technique or product for Linux that best suits these requirements (in
priority order):
1) Machines on my private net (192.168.x.x) should have full/unlimited
access to the Internet. I want to run stuff like browser, ftp, ICQ,
Netmeeting, Napster, Scour, games etc.
2) Machines on the Internet should only be allowed to access http, ftp
and mail (send mail to the mail server) on the public machine. When I
allow (when I'm at home) I also want to open up the ports necessary for
ICQ etc.
3) I want to bind Samba to the internal part of the public machine, so
I can easily copy files to it. Samba must not be reachable from the
Internet. Is this possible?
4) I want to have telnet access to the public machine from my private
net only, not from Internet. Is this possible?
5) I want some kind of intrusion detection so that I'm warned when
someone tries something (like portscanning etc.)
6) Logging of outside activities, of course.
Any tips?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone
I've got a normal wu-ftp server on my linux machine(redhat 6.1) but when I
try to resume an upload it just restarts the file.
Resuming a download works fine.
Doesn't wu-ftp support resuming uploads or is it me who haven't configured
it right ?
Can anyone help ?

I'm not overclocking and I checked my mem yesterday. I think it might be some sort of
problem with XFree 4.1 as I had it running for an hour yesterday but it died as
soon as I started X. I think I'm just going to wipe this thing and reinstall 6.2 as
I'm installing a new Vid card anyways.

On my Red Hat 6.0 machines, when I type login (anything, including nothing) to the
bash shell, it logs me out. Then I get the regular login routine... . I do not know if
this is consistent with other releases.

Hi,
I am writing a little programm (in perl) to keep my logfiles in order an
I would like to know how I can copy and then truncate the files beeing
shure not to loose any single line. The problem is, wehat if syslogd
writes sometihng to the log just after Icoppied the files and short
before I truncate it?
The solution I found was, to get en exclusive write-lock on the file. Is
this ok?

What file /.automount ? I do not have one on my RHL 6.0 system:
valinux:jdbeyer[~]$ ls -la /
total 104
drwxr-xr-x 26 root root 1024 Jun 5 10:54 .
drwxr-xr-x 26 root root 1024 Jun 5 10:54 ..

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 2048 Aug 9 18:00 bin

valinux:jdbeyer[~]$
Is that something new in RHL 6.1?

It is "updatedb", and I believe updatedb is smart enough to keep out of
places like /proc. It does look in /dev, but that seems to be OK.

Your command deletes only null lines (those with NO characters
in it).
I sometimes wish to delete empty looking lines, as for example,
the output of the C preprocessor. There are null lines, but
there a lines with only spaces, only tabs, or mixtures of spaces
and tabs.
g/^[ ]*$/d
In between the brackets are a space and a tab. If I got this
right (I have not done this in some time and may have goofed it
up) The statement means (or should mean) delete all lines that
have 0 or more spaces or tabs in it, but nothing else. If I have
it wrong, you will need to read up on regular expressions. You
can find a lot about them by doing a search on Google.

Now what the heck happened? When starting my RH6.0 I get a message
NFS statd [FAILED]
execvp: directory not found
Until now everything has worked fine. This behaviour just started
quite suddenly the other day when booting up my machine.
I usually boot the maching using runlevel 3 and then start X using
startx. This doesn't work any longer either, I just get a message
Authentication failed.
xinit: server error
Luckily I can start X booting directly to runlevel 5.
/var/log/messages contains a strange message, saying
Sep 7 15:41:46 b709 syslogd: Cannot glue message parts together
Sep 7 15:41:46 b709 173>Sep 7 15:41:46 rpc.statd[423]:
gethostbyname error for ^X^X^Y^Y^Z^Z^ ....
and followed by several lines of junk which looks binary stuff
or random characters. This message occurred just before the problems
started.
I'd appreciate if anyone got any ideas what happened and how to fix
it.

Thanks Carl,
"which fax" give /usr/bin/fax which is the file that I'm editing.
using kview to view the resulting TIFF files shows that they are just images
of the text contained in the postscript files. It doesn't appear that the
.ps file has actually been converted into an image. Any ideas on why this
would be? When issuing the "fax make faxtest.ps" command it tells me that
"faxtest.ps is text..."
I have modified the "fax" file to echo the efix command that it issues to
the console, so that when I issue "fax make faxtest.ps" it echos:
/usr/bin/efix -ve -otiffg3 -p21x29.7cm -r204x196 -n -faxtest.ps.%03d
faxtest.ps
Any tips

Maybe I should have said "typical" instead. Clarification; By
"normal" I was referring to everyday home computer activities
like browsing the web, wordprocessing, playing games. Stuff that
wouldn't require any extraordinary performance from the hard

I'm a SCSI (only) user myself, but I know that when someone
*asks* if he needs SCSI, it usually means he doesn't really need
it. It's not decent to recommend an overkill solution to someone
who's just a bit in the dark at the moment.
You *can* use a Jaguar for transporting groceries, but a light

Linux Mandrake 7.0 Complete although obviously exactly what im looking for
in an OS has been a road of hassle for me, why? Well Here are some
reasons.....
1) Not Compatible with my sound card
2) Cant Detect My Video Card making me have to use a 'Generic VGA
Compatible which needless to say isnt all too attractive
3) My Modem wont work with it, either is locked, or now detected, or so on
and so on
4) Other reasons...
Anyway maybe my computer being fairly new is the reason for all of this
but either way it is discouraging me so i am asking a few questions to
save myself from giving up entirely before i just give up on linux
Mandrake completely until i get a new computer or buy a new graphics card.
Here are some things you'll wanna know first:
1)I Have an Intel(R) 810 Graphics Chip Driver (you may know this issue
concerning these graphics cards)
2) I have Linux Mandrake Complete 7.0
3) My computer is an HP Pavilion with a 15" Monitor 34-50, 50-100
4) My modem is listed as compatible with linux but not my sound card
OK Here is the core of my questions, please everyone who has the time
answere any of them no matter how many replys i get
QUESTIONS:
1) How can i get linux to detect my graphics card so i can get what it is
capable of visually? The problem is when i go into the /etc/X11/XF86Setup
file to change things the next time i wanna startx it locks up and i can
no longer get into my desktop, i get an error. this causes me to re-
install linux again. i am nervous to make any changes to my graphics files
because of this, but if you know.......what can i do?
2) When i get a Modem Locked Message what do i do?
3) Is there anything at all i can buy that would help me with these
problems.........books, software, etc, or anywhere i can go on the web?
Alright thank you please respond i would really like to have my Linux OS
using my graphics card instead of the 'Generic VGA Compatible' so i can it
better visually.

Hi,
I am having a lot of difficulty mounting smb shares under RH6.1 with
smbmount 2.0.5 thru 2.0..7. I am able to successfully execute:
smbmount //208.203.1.2/sharedstuff /mnt
However, when I do so and then try to use the Gnome file browser to
view the contents of /mnt, I get the following error message
(repeatedly):
"File exists but can not be stat-ed"
When I use the shell command ls -l I get the following:
ls: a: No such file or directory
ls: a: No such file or directory
ls: D: No such file or directory
ls: T: No such file or directory
ls: T: No such file or directory
The letters after ls: appear to be the first letter of the directories
contained in the volume 'sharedstuff'.
<As an aside, I am able to list the contents of 'sharedstuff'
successfully using xsmbrowser 2.4.0 which relies on smbmount. The
contents list flawlessly.>
Does anyone out there understand why this might be happening and how to
fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Randall.

: Your command deletes only null lines (those with NO characters in it).
As I tried to hint to him earlier, it only deletes the contents of
blank lines (of which there is nothing anyway). It does it as many
times as it finds no content in such a line, which is of course, once
per the line. And it leaves the line in place, empty (still).

Better ;-)

Are these milligrams? If so, I'd like a copy. I have a portable which
could do with that sort of thing!
You mean "MB". MegaBytes.
: i formatted the 510 mg hard drive with dos and then booted red hat linux
Better be the first disk.

: i installed linux and it worked, so far so good!
: however, going into windows 'my computer' there is no mention of the second

Why should there be? Is there a windows partition on it? Apparantly
not!
: now if i want windows to recognize this hard drive again, what do I do?
Windows recognises it just fine. Run fdisk.exe and you'll see.

: 1) Not Compatible with my sound card
This has nothing to do with mandrake. You soundcard either does or does
not have a driver for linux. If it does, install it. If it doesn't,
yes, ask mandrake to fund a driver writer, or better, ask the card
manufacturer to. It's in their interest.
: 2) Cant Detect My Video Card making me have to use a 'Generic VGA
"Detect" is not of interest. If Xfree86 has a driver for it, install
it. If Xfree86 doesn't, ask the commercial X driver companies if they
have one. They usually do, at $100 a throw. Make your decision based
on that.
: 3) My Modem wont work with it, either is locked, or now detected, or so on
Again, this is nothing to do with mandrake. If your modem is a modem,
(I gather it is an ISA or PCI internal) then it is supported by linux.
End of story. If it is not a modem but a winmodem, then you depend on
having a linux driver for it. There are drivers for several sorts of
winmodems nowadays, and you should install one of them if it is
appropriate.
: 4) Other reasons...
For example?

I have RH 6.2 Linux running on a K7V and it works great. The hard drive
performance is excellent (according to hdparms) using the UDMA/66 on-board
controller (after tuning with hdparms). I have not gotten the onboard
audio to work yet but haven't played with it yet (it has been a low
priority for me). All in all I'm pretty happy with it. Let me know if I
can help further.
