They're not really different versions of Linux, they are just Linux
shipped with different sets of utilities and "stuff".

The easiest way to see the difference is to go to the home page of
each distribution an see what they offer, and to hang around here to
get a feel of what people think about them and what people use
themselves.

At <URL:http://www.linux.org/> you will find links to most available
distributions (there's a "Distributions"-button on the page).

It tells you that in the docs that come with apache.

It may be possible that your memory is corrupt, maybe only one chip of them,
and that may explain why NT runs fine. I've seen this problem on my own pc
once, and there it was the memory...

i can't quite remember if there is an option to put in httpd.conf for
this problem or not however i do know of a fix. Just take off read
access for 'everyone' for the particular directory that way apache won't
read the directory and display the contents. That's what i did when i
found out my ISP allowed that so I changed the permissions on my
directories to compensate.

   i have running a mac/ppc-601 and it is _very_slow_, but that's
most probably due to the graphics-support: i'm using fbdev ...

my alpha/pc-164 is a nice, quite fast machine. so i'd say it is
faster. i don't really see why _linux_ should be faster on any
architecture. i would say the computer as such is faster, but not
   linux on that computer.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Martha H Adams)
Subject: Tin-gold fretting problem.
Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 11:50:05 GMT

I've got a crashy Linux machine here, and I think the problem is tin
memory contacts on (78-pin) simms in gold board connectors. The machine
is about five years old now.

I have had the simms in and out a few times. In several tries, I seem
to get an unreliable fix lasting up to a few days. Once my machine
crashed while booting and it munged a tree that has grown up to around
105 MB over the past fifteen years or so: that got my attention. (But I
had an up-to-the-minute backup.) I'm using this machine for serious and
large text work.

I'm wary of a real polishing operation because I don't want to kill the
simm chips thru static electricity provoked by the friction. I have
however, thought of polishing with a small rolled wad of brown paper bag
paper, after dampening the wad with water.

My copy of Scott Mueller's `Upgrading and Repairing PCs', Linux Edition,
2000, page 451+, describes a tin-gold problem where the tin atoms
migrate into the gold, creating an alloy of tin and gold which degrades
the electrical connection. The remedy Mueller suggests (apart from a
new motherboard and new memory) is application of a contact lubricant,
Stabilant 22, made by DW Electrochemicals in Canada.

So I tried local computer and supply stores, and while some seemed to
have heard of Stabilant 22, none had it for sale. So then I tried Radio
Shack and found some stuff labelled "Edge connector cleaner and
protector". But when I tested this on a piece of paper, I found it
leaves no residue when it dries, so it can't be some variation on the
Stabilant 22. Maybe it "protects" by cleaning: I've had some experience
with Radio Shack and that is why I test what I get from them. So their
stuff isn't what I'm looking for.

So I'm in a jam. I'm watching out for a Stabilant 22 supplier, but I am
also looking for word from someone with more experience than mine. Has
someone found something that works for tin/gold contact problems? Is
Stabilant 22 available locally or almost locally near Boston; is there
an alternative resource for this?

One person has suggested a very thin film of WD40 on the simm contacts.
This sounds like a possibility but has anyone else had experience with
WD40 or other materials? I'd like to know more before I glop up my
hardware with WD40.

He also suggests the simms themselves could be the problem. I think
that is not here, because my machine seems so responsive to my tinkering
with the simms.

If you've some ideas, please post here so everyone can find it, since I
suspect others would like to know something on this topic.

Thanks -- Martha Adams

You probably have a 't' too much. Or - if that does not fix the problem -
perhaps you want to change it to:

1:2345 respawn:/bin/alogin tty1

But I am no expert...

if you mean you have some points on a surface and you
want the program to interpolate to generate the surface

in a high-end package. If you have enough points
to cover the surface completly thats a bit easier.

Lucas,
I am not an expert at this but I believe you want to edit the XF86Config
file. On my system (RH 6.2) this is found at:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11

In Redhat at least you can run the Xconfigurator program to setup up
your video.

Of course you will likely want to make a copy of XF86Config with the old
settings in case things don't work out.

I am not sure if this is the information you were looking for, but I
hope it helps.

Without a boot floppy:

LILO: linux single
..
.
< startup stuff>

bash#

You are in single user mode. Make sure you have a copy of a "vi" quick
reference or someone who knows how to use a simple editor.

Now go over to the /etc directory
go into the hosts file and put in the the ip address that is to be yours
next to your computer's name.
Next go into sysconfig directory . there, move into the "network-scrips"
directory. Inside you will find ifcfg-eth0 or something. Open that file :

bash# vi ifcfg-eth0

You will find the entries for the old network setup.
Change them to what your network administrator recommends.

Next,
go to /etc/resolv.conf and enter the ip address of a DNS server here .

now try to reboot and see if it comes up.

The first thing that you should do is turn off sendmail ( the Mail server )
if you are not using it. While you are at it, turn off "named" , which is a
DNS server running on your computer ( you won't need it as you'll be using
another one on the network hopefully ) .

That should take care of it.

PS: If the network can't be reached, that should not prevent a boot up.
There will be the local loop ( lo which is 127.0.0.1). Your boot up can
take several minutes if something like sendmail is started on boot up, and
your network settings are incorrect .

Hope This Helps.

I used to be the 'computer guy' for a non-profit org and
remember getting mail brochures from those guys. It seemed to
me to be a glorified contact manager. Maybe you should take a
look at contact managers. I'm not sure what there is out
there, but check out freshmeat.org. Ultimately, a contact
manager is a database. Maybe someone can set you up with
MySQL or Postgres tables and a few perl scripts, etc.

Are you sure that the kernel image is below cyl. 1024?
The only way to make sure this is true, is to make sure /boot is in a
partition that lies ENTIRELY below cyl. 1024.
(You can check this with fdisk -l /dev/hda)
running fdisk /mbr will indeed leave you with an unbootable system.
Did you rerun lilo after you made changes. What does the lilo.conf file
look like? If you cannot make much out of it, post it here and you'll
get more help. (But first make sure the kernel-image is below cyl. 1024)
