Subject: question about QT 1.44

I'm running Corel Linux, which I'm told is a modified version of Debian.
It has KDE version 1.1.2 (I think, although since I'm somewhat new to
linux, I don't really know how to check versions for everything), and
many programs I try to compile require the QT libraries (and headers for
some), but version 1.44 only, not higher or lower. I previously tried
just installing QT 1.44, which causes the system to return back to the
login screen right after I have logged in, and continues to do so
forever, as far as I can tell. Anyway, my question is this: Is there a
way to install the libraries and headers in some separate place which
will be used for compiles, but they wouldn't be used for KDE on runtime?
Also, does anyone know why I would get that repeating login screen
error?

Thanks in advance.

I just finished creating my own system from scratch. Very good instructions.

I've tested my Jet Direct EX and it works if I telent to hpjd 9100,
type in a line,<NL><CR><FF>. Now I've attempted to use lprngtool to
add a Jet Direct EX / HP 500C printer and the only thing to print is
@pr and I have to manually load/eject the page.

Here's the printcap:

##LPRNGTOOL## DIRECT cdj500 300x300 letter {} DeskJet500 3 {}
lp0
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0
:sh
:cm=HP JetDirect EX

:af=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/acct
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/log
:cd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/filter
:lp=/dev/null
:

I fail to see the IP address or the port number. I am confused!

How do I get this thing configured, later I have to get the samba part
working (Yikes!).

Thanks.

I vaguely recall looking for this a while back. I believe the files are
in "CAB" (cabinet?) format. There were a fiew low-grade hits regarding
unarchive utilities for this format, but nothing particularly promising,
as I recall. Is thes the same thing you're looking for?

Yeah, what he said.

It's "--get-selections" to write current package list to stdout. It's
"--set-selections" to read a list of desired packages from stdin (or
file). Makes cloning a particular package set fairly easy.

I would like to backup files on one Mandrake linux server
to the tape drive in another. I've tried setting up an .rhosts
file with the following example entry in a non root user home
directory:

remote.domain.com username

Changing permissions of /dev/st0 so "others" can write to the
tape drive...

Then on remote system w/o the tape drive:

tar cvf tape_system_name:/dev/st0 /etc

I get error:

tape_system_name.domain.com: Connection Refused
tar: Cannot Open user_name@tape_system_name:/dev/st0/: Input/Output
error
tar: Error is not recoverable. Exiting now.

I've followed some other examples posted throughout various
news groups to no avail. Any help would me greatly appreciated.

I've both built and bought systems here in the US. It's been my
experience that you don't save any money by building it yourself, but
you can get a better quality system for the same price if you do the
work required to pick out good quality parts.

Thanks for making me look again.

Looking at the man page for mount, auto tries the types defined in
/etc/filesystems. It tries them each in sequence, stopping at the first
one that works. On my RH 6.2 install, the file contains:

        ext2
        nodev proc
        nodev devpts
        iso9660
        vfat

by default. It's probably worth changing this to what you're likely to
encounter in your floppy/cd drive. For me, this would be something
like:

        vfat
        hfs
        ext2
        iso9660

even better would be /href="(.*?)"/i assuming that the url is always
preceeded by href= (or HREF= or hReF=) and surrounded by quotes (which it should
be). That way you don't pick up URLs that aren't part of a tag.

It's still not bulletproof, though, as it will pick up tags like
<LINK HREF="http://www.foo.bar.com/style.css" REL="stylesheet">
and
<BASE HREF="http://www.foo.bar.com/docs/">
if you only want it to find anchor tags, you'll have to complicate things a bit,
but changing it to /<a href="(.*?)"/i is a step in that direction (though not
100% of the right thing). or even try sifting for the .html/.htm extension:
/href="(.*?\.html?)"/i (I think that's right. My Perl is a bit rusty)

BTW, the newsgroup of choice for this type of question would be
comp.lang.perl.misc

and the way to find it out on your own would be
man perlre

Try it, there's a lot of useful perl regex info in there.

There is no single OS called "UNIX" these days. UNIX a trademark that
applies to any UNIX-like OS that passes an official set of conformance
tests.

Very few UNIX-like operating systems (commercial or free) have bothered
to pass these tests.

For all intents and purposes, Linux is a version of UNIX, even though it
can't legally call itself one.

Now, if you want to compare Linux with a specific UNIX-like operating
system (like BSD, Solaris, IRIX, HP-UX, DigitalUnix, etc.) then you can
probably find people willing and able to help you.

and installing a distro just to make my own is messy and to big.
i only have redhat 5.2, 6,6.2 caldera open 2.3n and turbolinux distros
and they are very big to install a consol delelopment installation.

and i wan't to compile using the latest versions possible.

This is because the Zip's terminator is drawing power from the Zip
drive directly and not from the Term-power line on the SCSI bus. This
is a bad design.

> Most *other* SCSI devices use *passive* termination (or no internal
> terminators). These devices can be powered off, so long as the
> *passive* terminator is in place.

No.

All terminators require a power supply to work. Most draw power from
the SCSI bus, with one or more devices (usually your host adapter)
providing that power.

Both active and passive terminators can be made to draw power from the
bus, and both can be made to require their own power supply.

You should always use an active terminator. They are far better at
terminating a SCSI bus's signals. Active terminators are also required
for Ultra SCSI. Even with an old slow SCSI bus, active termination can
improve signal quality - leading to a lower error rate and possibly
faster throughput.

There really is no good reason to use a passive terminator these days.

I assume that you have IDE drives connected to an integrated IDE controller.
If so, make sure that you have the latest BIOS installed. If the BIOS does

Learning GNU/Linux: Problems and a Plan

The Problems:

1. MAGNITUDE:

Unix is vast!

2. ORGANIZATION:

In general, there is no central point of contact for help and
documentation. Some GNU/Linux distributions have a command named
`documentation' that provides such a point for documentation. This only
ties together disparate sources, it does not unify them. Thus, using these
materials still requires much knowledge. There is no index in the full
sense. This talk will explicate the types of documentation including some
indices. What to do if you don't know where it is, what it's named, or how
it's spelled.

3. LEVEL:

Most Unix documentation presupposes considerable knowledge of the system
including vocabulary. Tutorials do exist, but may not be available; they
are not comprehensive. Good books do exist.

My approach:

1. Know the terrain and terminology. What types of documentation exist,
where is it stored, how to access it, what is it for?
2. Know the tools
3. Use a computer to do some of the work
  A. Search
  B. Active techniques of discovery
(in contrast to the bibliographic approach)
  C. Storage and organization of results
  D. Building your own custom aids that match your needs

I assume that these are different "schemes". See section 5.3 of the PCMCIA
HOWTO, e.g. at http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/doc/PCMCIA-HOWTO-5.html.

Hi Martin,

if you look in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin you should be able to find the grub
program. You just have to execute that and use it to reinstall the grub
loader to your MBR.
I'm a bit hazy about the exact location, because although I've got grub on
my linux machine, it's not down at the moment so I can't check. So if you
still have problems tomorrow post again.

Cheers,

Martin.
