Hello,

I'm mounting a directory exported from a Linux box to my AIX
4.3.2 box. I can mount the directory fine, but when I try
to ls -l the directory from AIX, it gives "there is not
enough memory available now". What's going on here, anyone
have a clue? Thanks,

Just found it on sourceforge. Looks like it was moved around the 6th of Oct.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xmps/ There aren't any tarballs up yet, but you
can get the code via cvs (just remember that you have to run autogen.sh with
the code from cvs, not configure).

I have to agree with the xterm / terminal procedure -- I've had some difficulty
using the
windows-like interfaces with linux. Command-line procedures seem to be more
reliable and time-tested.

Subject: Errors in Mandrake 7.1
From: Josef Oswald <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 16:12:05 GMT

HI:-)

Last week I installed Mandrake 7.1 via ftp.

Now when Mandrake ( on a dual boot-box) starts up I get the following
messages during the boot process.

var/lock/subsys/ kudzu, network, portmap, apmd,
syslog, identd, atd,
crond, inet, lpd files are missing.

Xconfigurator got me this message:
/usr/lib/libDrakX/auto/c/stuff/stuff.so for module c: stuff. libgdk-1.2.so.0....
cannot open shared object file, no such file or
directory at
/usr/lib/perl5/5.6.0/i386-linux/
Dynaloader.pm

Also it seems that I installed the wrong driver
for the Video-card ( Ati Rage IIC AGP) and when the KDE is running it is
very fuzzy. Under SuSE I use a Mach64...

I wanted to replace SuSE with Mandrake, but now I
am very glad I did not
do it yet.... with all the problems I run into it....

I'm guessing he's talking about linuxconf. You can change the root password from that
as
well.

Hi,

I have Turbolinux6 system based on their 2.2.13-12 and now running my
own 2.2.17 kernel. The 2.2.17 kernel has 256 pty support.

Screen used to work right out of the box, but now i have somehow
fucked it up so that it can't run and gives an error saying "No more
PTY's". I think i screwed things up when I tried installing a new
version of screen from the sources. The README asks me to put termcap
and terminfo files in their proper locations, but I'm not quite sure
what they are. Could someone please point me to some info.

Subject: HELP! ttyS0, external modem problem
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 17:50:18 +0100

Hello

So, here is the problem: I first installed SuSE 6.3 using a standard
kernel, and the modem worked fine. But the soundcard didn't. Then I had to
re-configure and recompile the kernel (I've never done it myself
before...), I read all those dox about isapnp, but eventually I found out
that the soundcard (ONLY) works if no isapnp.conf file is present and that
linux sets up IRQs, IOs and DMAs correctly (exectly in accordance with
Win... yeah, I had it before on this machine, and I still have this disk
in case of trouble...). But now my modem does not work. So, either:
1) I misconfigured my kernel and either did not include support for it or
included something that I shouldn't really...
or
2) the soundcard and the modem conflict. However a quick check did not
show any conflicts. But maybe I was not doing a right check...

Now, could anybody, please, tell me shat EXACTLY components I MUST
configure my kernel for on a standalone computer, having, among optional
hardware ONLY a soundcard and a modem (including PPP networking, of
course). And how EXACTLY can I check if there are any conflicts? And do I
REALLY need isapnp.conf? When I did try to use it I only got some conflict
messages...

dmesg (boot-time messages) show 'approximately' the same ttyS* records for
both kernels, but at different stages... I am away from that computer now,
so, can't tell exactly.

Can I find out how the kernel on the cd was configured?

Please HELP!

Thanks

hi

i'm using slackware 7.1 and i've decided to upgrade my X server from
3.3.6 to 4.0.1.
The X server successfully installs, but when i try to run enlightenment
(0.16.4), it reports the error:

"Xlib: This server does not support the shape expansion.
Either your Xserver is too old or misconfigured.
Exiting"

When compiling the Xserver i performed the routine make World and make
install. I used this server on
an older redhat 6.0 system with enlightenment 0.16.3 and i had no
problems.

What's the problem?

You don't have the correct syntax.... Try: rm -r *.obj or rm -rf
*.obj
the f will simply allow it to recursivley delete without prompting you.

Simple eh? And it didn't take 40 steps either..

I did just that. It worked fine. The system's BIOS didn't grok
drives bigger than 8.5 GB, while the smallest drive I could
buy at the local computer store was 10 GB. It auto-detected
the drive at 8.5 GB - important to DOS, irrelevant to Linux.

The usual gotchas apply: Windoze, if you install it, will insist
on being in the first partition on the first drive. LILO needs
to be accesible from BIOS - I cut a 2 GB partition for Windoze
(found the hard way that you must use a DOS-based version of
fdisk for this), put Linux in the rest (1 GB root, 128 MB
swap, the rest as /usr), installed LILO in the MBR, and every-
thing was well.

Also, where can I read up on setting up a secure ftp site.

rm -rf *.obj

If by mistake you type

rm -rf * .obj

you can kiss all your files good-bye.
