Thanks for the help. ht0 is the one I was looking for. I ended up finding the
entry in /proc for it shortly after I saw your posting.
Much appreciated.

I have a C++ library (Open Source Audio Library Project) that includes
a pitch control for playing audio. This library also has a sample
application called player that implements this pitch control.

Ask them to send it in RTF, the result being little or no formating

Let top run in some terminal window as that can happen if the

Probably stupid, but a few hints would be appreciated...
Installed RH6.2 a couple of days ago (shall be used as Internet
firewall but so far unconnected on all interfaces). I am used only to
WinNT environment before.
After logging in there is a fairly usable graphic interface (KDE) to
use also for a person like me, even with a File Manager to navigate
the disk with.
So start doing things:
I want to move a firewall script file from the WinNT machine that has
Internet access to the so far isolated Linux machine. It is a small
file so I use a floppy. Copy file to floppy on NT machine, insert in
drive on Linux.
Problem:
How can I see the file? Clicking on the Floppy icon brings up the file
manager with an empty window! I positively know that there are files
on that floppy, still nothing shows up. Why? Even tried the command
line command ls -l /mnt/floppy/*.* it comes up blank....
Another one:
How can I copy a file from one location to another?
Third:
In the firewalling section of usenet I have seen mention of a file
called rc.firewall, it apparently contains information on firewalling.
Where exactly can I find it? I have looked in /etc and a few other
places w/o success.

I have RedHat 6.x.
When I try to query or install rpms I get the following:

only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
query of /tmp/net-tools-1.56-2.src.rpm failed

Can anyone enlighten me?

Possibly an odd question, however....
Is it possible to have too many entries in crontab for a specific
time/day? For example if I have 25 entries in crontab to execute a
script that updates a web stats page from logfiles at 00:05 everyday of
every month for a group of virtual domains things should work ok - late
at night - low machine load - etc .. but is there a point at which maybe
there is a better way of handling things than using crontab?

In RH6x, removable media (floppies) weren't automagically mounted.
You'll need to do something like "mount /mnt/floppy" so that the OS
recognizes that the floppy has been inserted. (You should umount when
you're done too.)
man mount
man umount
Newer distributions have automount. I know Mandrake 7 does for
example.

Typically you have to create it. It will be a series of ipchains
commands, each one adding a rule to your firewall.
There's a dandy interactive tool to get you started at:

One of my books told me to do this to get lilo to recognize the new
kernel. I too use bzImage to compile the kernel. My system doesn't
move them to the boot diretory, I have to move them myself.
Do you know anything about installkernel, it looks like it will
install the kernel and system.map in place.
Do you know anthing about the initrd-VERSION NUMBER.img in the boot
directory. Is a new one created each time I compile. When I switch
versions how do I create a new img file.

A core file is what the system dumped from memory of a program
which crashed. If you were a real Linux guru, you could in
prinicple use debugging tools to find out exactly what went
wrong, but you don't sound like one, and in any case it probably
wouldn't be worth the effort. Using a terminal window and
the command line interface, cd to the directory containing the
core file and use
file core
That will probably tell you which program produced the core dump,
and it might be useful to know what it was. You might also look
at the date of the file. But otherwise you should remove it
because core files can take up quite a lot of space which you
don't want to waste.
If you want to work at it, you can prevent core files from being
produced in your own directories with a ulimit comand put in
.bash_profile. Study the gash manual page to see how. |But
that won't kee[ the system from making core dumps in other
directories.
One common cause of core dumps is netscape crashing.

P.S. There are a couple of files or directories in your system
which have core as part of their names but which are
not core dumps. But as far as I know none of these is simply
named core

Hey folks...
Running RedHat 7.
I'm having problems getting either the newest release version of
X-CD-Roast (.96ex2) or the latest devel release (.98alpha6) working
properly.
For the alpha release (which I'd prefer to use), everything works fine
except for copying audio CDs. The only option is for "On-the-fly"
copying and it won't let me change to creating an image first. I
don't want to have to extract the tracks individually if I can help
it. I've got the correct versions of cdrecord, cdda2wav, etc.
I can't even get the .96ex2 release to compile. I have newer versions
of the dependencies (TCL, Tk, and Tix) and the ./configure script
doesn't seem to find them. Here's the output:
# ./configure
Autoconfiguration of X-CD-Roast 0.96ex:

RPM -q reports I have the regular RH7 versions already installed:
tcl-8.3.1
tk-8.3.1
tix-4.1.0.6
and I verified this. Is there any way to reference these installed
libraries instead of having to build new (actually, old) libraries?
Any suggestions on either (or both) issues would be much
appreciated... Thanks..
