What do you mean 'recompile it statically' (I'm not familiar with this
term)? If I follow the wu-ftp instructions of './configure', 'make', and
'make install' I don't get the home/ftp folder structure created. I have to
create the whole thing manually. Therefore arises the problem of what the
permissions should be and what versions of files should go into the
structure, as solved by the GUEST HOWTO.

you mean in your file manager? if yes, it's just a core file,
i.e. some program aborted and its memory contents got written t that
file. you can use it for determining what went wring in that
program. the os isn't effected at all, and you can safely delete that
file

It looks asthough there's something wrong or missing to do with the
compiler, have you built any other packages, has the user who does
the build got execute access to the compiler.
Give us some more info such as what system/distro, is it a very
new setup, and have you compiled other stuff with gcc.

Run ypbind/ypserv in debug mode... You'll get better answers step by

root@machine# ypbind --debug

Does your nis domainname show itself?

And I note that with the release of test10pre6, gcc 2.7.3.2 is no
longer able to compile the kernel correctly. Quoting Linus:
pre6 has tons of small fixes, the most noticeable of which are
(a) the new compiler requirements (sorry, but it turned out that
2.7.2.3 really is too subtly broken with named structure initializers
that are very heavily used these days inside the kernel)
Suggested stable compiler: gcc-2.91.66, aka egcs-1.1.2, which
is the one most vendors have been shipping for a long time,
and while sure to be buggy too has not been found to be
seriously so at least yet.
Other modern gcc versions may well work too.
So if you're compiling 2.4.0 prereleases it looks like 2.7.2.3 is no
longer safe to use.

A distro is very much a matter of taste. They all have different strong
points and come with some different software, but at the end of the day
they're all linux.

So if you don't need it at startup why do you have it in the startup routine?
Run /usr/sbin/setup and there you can choose what starts at boot time, take
sendmail out.

But as I said above, if you don't need something running all the time
then don't have it running all the time.

If they don't support linux, send them a email telling to support linux.
Or else ask them to release the specification so at least you can

Color me lucky. My backups are run at 3:17 on Saturday mornings. The only
other stuff I've done with cron is to run a script that uses 'fortune' to
generate these stupid taglines.
On a stand-alone box like mine, it's no problem to examine the crontabs
for each user (both me and root) with $crontab -u <user> -l
but that could get to be a chore if there were a bunch of users. Seems
like someone that was reasonably proficient at shell programming could
cobble together a little script that would list all users' crontab entries
to either printer or a disk file.

Hello all,
I have installed this system back in 97 as an RH 4.2. Since then it
mutated through various updates and changes. I'm close to recent rawhide
library-wise, but configs and init scripts are mostly my own. (Yes, I do back
it up from time to time). I would like to make sure I have a boot disk
handy in case I get stuck in some way. I'd prefer to have a bootable CD,
since I am trying to do my part of phasing out floppies ;-). I could put
together my own. But I would prefer not to reinvent the wheel if
possible. Now my question is, are there distribution install CDs that
allow to do rescue? I'd like to be able to boot from CD and access my
hard drive, have all file utils handy, plus fdisk, mount and lilo.
(kernel must have support for sym53c875 scsi hba, since both cd and hdd
are hanging on one).
Do any distro's have a cd that allows that? Preferably cheap version from
cheapbytes or lsl.
Thank you,
Lev

One way is to alt+shift+2 to open the address book, then from the address
book window, alt+S to export the addr book to a file (Save to... dialog box
opens). Once you have the file, you can edit it, cat it or whatever you want
