Next, i'd try comparing:
- timestamps "of unmodified" files
- program version (assuming, that they're original)
[all heuristics] with other redhat versions ;-)
You really still trust that system ("in any means you like")?
Why were these files deleted?
(Means: you're sure that's all, what has actually happened?)

Hi, I tried to use "diskcopy" to duplicate a floppy disk but failed. The
dos program reports that there is unrecoverable error. This error may be
the result of some protection imposed onto the disk and make it impossible
to be duplicated in DOS. I cannot seem to copy the disk track-by-track.
There might be some mixed/special file structure on the floppy. I am now
wondering if I can create an image of the whole floppy regardless of
data/file structure, and create an identical floppy. Thanks in advance.

A static linked executable doesn't use any DLL files (.so in Linux)
When setting up FTP, you put a copy of executables in the FTP
directory tree, usually something like "/home/ftp/bin". Now for
security you use "chroot". But if your executable needed a DLL
from elsewhere it would no longer have access. The ls command
would appear broken!
Pet peeve:
Actually, given that 60 GB disks sell for less than $200, and
256 MB RAM is affordable too, it makes less and less sense to me
to use dynamic linked binaries anywhere. I hate when everything
breaks when I upgrade a .so file, or that to upgrade one thing I
have to upgrade a dozen other .so files (some of which in turn
need still other .so files). Linux *used to* be a stable platform.
I hate huge modular kernels too. (A kernel based web server indeed!)
Just my two cents, obviously most develpers disagree!

Easy enough:
cd /tmp
(insert source diskette)
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=dkt.img bs=10k
(insert target diskette)
dd if=dkt.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=10k
rm dkt.img
I have no idea whether that will circumvent the copy-protection
scheme. I would like to know whether it works, though!

You don't. (there is code in 2.4.* kernels to make this possible,
however).

: call??? I couldn't figure out where it is.
It's nowhere and everywhere. Each block device will provide it's own
implementation of read. They'll be read/write of BLOCKs, however.
It'll be your file system that translates r/w calls on FILEs to r/w
calls on blocks.

This one has me stumped.
I had a minor screw-up with samba, and now I have files with the same
name but different case - e.g Base.dwg v. BASE.DWG in the same directory.
Naturaly, this makes life in a mixed win/*nix environment interesting.
I need to find all files that
live in the same directory
have the same name, but differing only in case.
So in the above example, the script would kick out
dir/dir/dir/Base.dwg
dir/dir/dir/BASE.DWG
but not
dir2/dir2/dir2/Base.dwg
It's not limited to any particular file name.

For some reason now I can only startx using the root acount.
When I try from another acount I get the message:
Authintecation failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownershit?
The only changes I've made since I've last been able to use X as an

I'm using Redhat 6.2

Actually, it is different everywhere. There are only a handful of countries
that observe it. In the US, there are a few states that do not recognize the
change. I sort of like the fact that my Linux systems changes this for me
automatically, but Linux is internationally distributed and for those living in
countries that does not participate in the time-change, I could see this
'feature' as an annoyance.

There must be a great routing resource site for linux out there?

i have a silly question.
i have 12 sun ipc's ( 25mhz cpu, 48mb ram, 500mb disk, single ethernet
connection, headless ) and a ross sparcplug ( dual 100mhz, 256mb ram, 9gb
disk ).
i was reading up on linux clustering, and was thiking about taking the 12
ipc's and attempting to cluster them, using the sparcplug as the primary
interface machine... having only one ethernet port each, i can't cross
connect like all the cool beowulf sites show... is it still possible to do
some experimentation and ( most importantly ) see some seriously cool
performace boosts as 12 25mhz cpu's kick into a task? i know better than
to expect too much, i'm just looking for a fun and interesting way to use
these old boxes, even if just for a little while to check out this type
architecture.
am i even close?
thanks.

If you have your system set up so that Linux assumes that the hardware
clock is local time, then it believes that what you have on the hardware
clock is local time. It cannot "change automatically" as it may be
redoing what you have already done to the hardware clock. That is why
almost all unix systems run their harware clocks on UTC. Then Linux
translates from UTC to local time, including daylight savings,
automatically.
Set up your system to use UTC.
Of course if you are running Windows as well, then windows believes in
taking control of the hardware clock and playing around with it for its
own purposes. But that is a Windows problem.

Generally, don't do that. It is a lot of hassle, and prone to problems.
Instead, have a user mode helper application send it to you.
This has been discussed on linux-kernel several times.

I am experiencing the same problems as you. Using a linksys card and
Red Hat will not recognize it. It can see the intel card no problem.
Linksys told me the same thing about the tulip stuff.
Tested three systems on my server. Windows 2000 server, Novell 5.x, and
Redhat Linux server. Of the three, Windows 2000 server is the only one
that I could get up and running and working as a intranet file server
in and exceptable amount of time. The others have takin over a week to
get anywhere near partly operational. I have to be honest windows only
took three hours to load and configure and 18 hours to download all the
file to be shared from another server. I gotta say it works ok. I have
a pc class server running windows 2k pro that is being used as an
intranet webserver, it is running so well that I have disconnected the
monitor and keyboard for use on a machine elsewhere. Im not touting ms
as a kick ass win all beat all solution, but they are getting more
stable... As for Linux... It is not consistant enough for big business
yet.
Anyway the linksys thing is a pain in the ass.

Subject: specifing a group when mapping a drive to a Samba server
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 14:04:37 -0600
I have what I think is a pretty simple question.
How do I specify the group that files created with a samba session have?
The userid on the Linux side is "cbarnes" and has a default group of "staff"
(400 in the /etc/group file). The user "cbarnes" is allowed to use the
group "webusers" (60 in /etc/group). Changing groups during a terminal
session is easy & flawless (eg. "newgrp webusers").
There are 2 shares on the Samba server that this user can have. One is to
his own home directory, where the normal permissions apply (ie. 0765). The
other is a directory that multiple people have access to, defined in the
smb.conf file as:
[web]
comment = Dept Web page
path = /home/httpd/html
valid users = cbarnes tonyr mtyson
public = no
writable = yes
printable = no
create mask = 0775
The problem I have is that when cbarnes maps to this share, he still has his
default group in place (ie. files get created with a group ownership of
"staff" rather than "webusers").
Is there something I can put into this smb.conf file to specify which group
permissions should be used for this share? If not, is there another way to
force files created to use a particular group?

The easiest way is to use the Registry Hack (on the PC workstations) which
