Subject: kernel panic, init not found
Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 08:06:11 +0100
Hello,
I messed around a litlle bit with LILO and now I have the following problem.
When I boot Linux, the status messages show like:
...
"Partition check"
...
"Freeing unused kernel memory"
But then (after "Freeing unused kernel memory"), I get:
"Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel"
and the system hangs...
When I boot from the Linux Bootdisk, go through the first questions and then
choose "Boot installed system", ( I have to supply the partition to boot
from, /dev/hdc1) the system comes up normally. So I think something in my
boot config is not quite right.
Does anyone know how to fix this, so I can boot from harddisk.
Here is my "lilo.conf":
# LILO Konfigurations-Datei
# Start LILO global Section
# If you want to prevent console users to boot with init=/bin/bash,
# restrict usage of boot params by setting a passwd and using the option
# restricted.
#password=bootpwd
#restricted
boot=/dev/hdc
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
vga=normal
read-only
prompt
timeout=100
# End LILO global Section
#
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hdc1
label = Linux
#
other = /dev/hda1
label = pmagic
table = /dev/hda
#
other = /dev/hda2
label = nt
table = /dev/hda
Thanks,
Dick

And ls -l /misc/cdrom gives you the result as you showed before (you
gave ls /cdrom)
is /cdrom mounted on a msdos partition?

What about /etc/gateways ? does this file exist?
or /etc/defaultrouter
Im quite sorry, because knowing nothing about RH, I only can guess.
the mentioned files are used by solaris...
Nevertheless, looking at your network startupscript in /etc/rc.d/init.d
could point you to the nescessary files....
good luck!

Firstly I unfortunately have to say, that I dont know where to get such
an adapter.
But to help you anyway, perhaps you may want to connect your laptop via
a nullmodem cable to another box and then use ppp to connect to your
LAN...

there are no viruses for linux :-)
(well, there are 2 i believe, but don't worry, no-one is using an AV
program with linux).
There are some programs that can scan DOS/WINDOWS files for example
when windows users use a file server or a mail server. Just see freshmeat.net

First allow includes only to a given extension (say .shtml) second,
allow includes only per-virtual directory. This way only URL-based
files will be downloadable, so /etc/ which is not under any virtual
directory won't be downladed.

PHP has a 'secure mode' option you can set on on the php.ini which
forces includes having the same UID/GID than the include, so a user
won't be able to include /etc/passwd since it's owned by other user
(root, in this case); furthermore, on secure mode you can stablish a
base directory, let's say your html based directories are all under
/home/httpd, than u can base your php to this directory so it won't be
able to get anything upwards to this (even more, you can stablish, if
possible or your php stuff under, say, /home/phppages/contents; set this
to be the base-directory for php content, and mount this or
subdirectories as virtual from the apache server as needed).
As as general aproach, I would set next to nothing in the default
server, would play as much as possible with virtual directories and set
resctrictive perms, kind of
alias /somealias/ /some/path/to/the/alias/
<directory /some/path/to/the/alias>
AllowOverride None
Options None
Order allow,deny
allow from all
</directory>
Then, you will have to enable on a per-directory basis anything you need
for the site to work properly.

Did I understand correctly that you installed Linux on a FAT16 partition?
If so, I think you should reformat the partition as ext2 or reiserfs, and
install again.
FAT16 has no concept whatever about unix-style permissions, and I think
that the gnome GUI login has exacting requirements about permissions.

When I connect new SCSI devices (external or internal) to a linux box,
how am I supposed to know what their device names will be?
For example, if I connect an external hard drive. On what device will it
appear?
Thanks

Then you need bsd permission semantics (i.e. perms and owner inherited
from dir, not from process). I think in linux you do this by setting
g+s on the dir - try it and see. It's surely in the chmod manpage, no?
Though come to think of it, +t may also be useful ... look at the man
page.
If you just want all users to have a particular umask, set it up for
them in /etc/profile and /etc/login
