Samba allows you to keep a separate log for each user or machine. Look at
the man page and search for directive "log file"
per machine directive is log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
per user directive is log file = /var/log/samba/log.%u

How do you know it isn't working? The reason I ask is RH7 seems to have some
gotcha wherein it messes up settings like PATH and aliases when you open up
a terminal session while in KDE or in GNOME. I have been wrestling with this
for a while now with no resolution.
In my case, I found that if I booted up the machine to a command prompt, all
my settings in /etc/profile and /etc/bashrc would work, but not in a
terminal window in a GUI.

There's no reason why C++ could not be just as stable, once they settle
on the ABI. The reason why it has been unstable is that the standard is
a fairly new thing (1998).

Constructing bindings that make use of the object model is more difficult.
The only foolproof way to get around object model differences is via some
sort of IDL framework ( CORBA or DCOP ).
However, some languages do bind to C++ without too many problems.
For example, there's SIP, which makes it possible to bind C++ to python,
and I believe java can work with C++.
I'm not saying it's easy, but it's certainly not impossible either.
The problem with the way GNOME/GTK is working at the moment is that despite
all the different language bindings to GTK, the support for the other
languages is weak. For example, ORBit still only supports C, so all
languages besides C are left out of the CORBA framework.

I don't see what your point is. There's no reason why you couldn't also
have a C++ ABI. In any case, the ABI for g++ will hopefully stabilise once
they release version 3.0. I don't forsee a new C++ standards document
coming any time soon.

Agree. MDK7.2 is the shittiest version of all mandrake. KDE2 crashes more
often than windows, daemons fail to start at boot, plus a variety of other minor
problems. The installation is pretty, but not needs quite a bit of work. All
I can say is it only looks pretty, (but the icons look kind of cartoony).
Mandrake released it too soon.

I'm having problems getting a Sandisk SDDR-31 USB Compact Flash Reader
to work. Everything I can find on the net says that the SDDR-31 should
work fine with the USB-Storage module. I have verified that the module
is loaded and have used rmmod/insmod commands to refresh it. The only
hardware showing up in /proc/scsi/scsi is my CD-RW drive. And attempts
to mount to /dev/sda1, sdb1, etc. have failed (error message: not a
block device). I also have a USB printer that works fine, so it's not a
problem with the USB core.
I am running Mandrake 7.2 with a 2.2.17 kernel (with the USB backport,
of course).
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for people who responded my question. However, I can't find the

Yes, I tried from KDE's terminal window like Bill mentioned.

I've screwed up printing on my system (Mandrake 7.0; I stupidly did 'rmmod
ppa' while it was in the midst of printing something). I've reinstalled
the kernel from the rpm on the distribution CD, and I've uninstalled and
reinstalled LPRng, rhs-printfilters, and printtool. I can't print the
printtool test page; when I try to, it's spooled, but nothing happens at
the printer. When I do 'lpq' I get the message shown as the subject.
Listing /dev/lp0 shows the following:
crw-rw---- 1 root daemon 6, 0 May 5 1998 lp0
Can someone tell me what's wrong?

Given such a level response in view of my rather flippant one, I retract the
flippant portion, with the appropriate humility, and regrets.
Never-the-less, the kernel has an even number assignment and unless the
developers have broken with the long established traditions, we mere users
may expect it to be stable, if not a 'stable release'.
Personally, I have a long standing habit of remaining with a kernel version
for quite some time after newer versions are out. This is a lesson I picked
up - rather slowly - after I got sick of breaking things just so I could run
the latest and 'greatest' kernel release.
Soon I will upgrade to one that supports iptables... not just yet.
Again, I regret the acrid response. Mea culpa maxima.

Just from the message(s), I would suggest that you sre sending too
fast. Any system will have limits on how many files a given process,
and the
system as a whole can have at a given time. You probably should send
some
stuff, then wait for the sending to complete.

Subject: How to configure a multi-port print server?
Date: 14 Nov 2000 16:18:36 -0500
I have a three-port Intel Netport print server. It is addressable via
TCP/IP or SMB. I have printers on two parallel ports.
I have been able to configure the first printer as an lpd server, and it
works perfectly. I cannot figure out how to get the printer on the second
port configured. I have tried both as an lpd server and as an SMB
server. Unfortunately the Netport does not support multiple IP addresses.
If anyone knows how to do this (or can point me to a how-to), I would
greatly appreciate the help.

There is a pre-compiled multi-threading example (tutorial18) that you
can download from
ftp://ftp.accord.com/dist
for Linux(x86) and Solaris(Sparc + x86). The example can be re-compiled
with a download from
http://www.accord.com/products/doc/IFCC.html
In the above example, a service creates a worker thread everytime a
request comes in. Eventually, when a worker thread finishes work, a
response is returned to the client and the thread exits.
The networking code is generated using the Accord Internet Function Call
(IFCC) compiler rather than RPCGEN. The IFC library is layered on top
of thread safe SUN RPC code. The method used within the library for
doing multi-threading is similar to that of doing async/callback RPC,
except that it is transparent to the user of the library and relatively
easy to use. With callbacks, one does not have to be concerned about
requests timing out, retrying, etc. It simplifies the design.
Multi-theading is very useful when you have requests whose compute times
vary over a wide range, i.e. from a few milliseconds to tens of seconds
or more. Ideally, the requests that take a short amount of time will
have high priority and have their responses sent out as soon as
possible. The requests that take more time would be threaded and have
their responses sent when they are eventually completed.
If the processing times of the requests are all approximately the same,
then I do not think multi-threading is going to make the service
response times any better. It will probably make it even slower,
because of the thread overhead that is involved. The only exception to
this would be if the kernel also supported multi-threading within a
process. It this is the case, then the worker thread should be created
with concurrency flag set. This would allow, e.g., a process with two
threads to run on two processors.
Before doing multi-threading, you may want to try and see if a single
threaded version is acceptable. If not, then is it possible to have two
or more instances of the same service running? It is much easier to
scale as well as improve response times by adding more instances of a
service, either on the same system, or on multiple systems.
A good example that comes to mind is nfs. If one has many users
requesting service, one simply increases the number of nfs daemons. And,
when that reaches its limit, one buys another system, divides up the
filesystems and the cycle continues.
With IFCC generated code, one can start with all synchronous (blocking)
requests, and later do multi-threading incrementally for each IFC
invocation as needed. Since IFCC uses C Language itself as its IDL
spec, it is very easy to generate distributed applications with it and
quickly try out different variations.
Hope this helps.

Subject: sail game modified for linux
Date: 14 Nov 2000 14:24:57 -0700
Hello,
I'm looking for a version of the old curses based game, sail, that has
been modified to run under Linux.
I have found the source tar in several places, many of which were
corrupt (as in tar would not extract them). After finding a .gz
version which was not corrupt, I managed to hack the code to the point
where it compiles, but there is something wrong with the code still.
In an xterm, initscr() goes to the alternate screen, then printing the
list of scenarios is stairstepped. Also, it won't take keyboard input
except for Ctrl-C to kill the game. There may be other problems, but
I haven't gotten beyond this so far.
I'll keep hacking on it, but as the code is almost undocumented,
figuring out the problems is going to be tough (for me).
If anyone has modified sources or differences or knows where they
might be, I'd appreciate a reference.
Thanks.
P.S. My ultimate aim is to convert sail to a single player Palm Pilot
game. That may be beyond me, but hope springs eternal. If anyone
knows of a port to Palm, that would be interesting to me also.
