Check BIOS setup to set 1st bootable device.
Only newer (couple of years) BIOSes support boot from CDROM

I can't find how to compile something statically against one library

Any help much appreciated

Have you checked the cpu fan? I had a similar problem and it trned out
to be an overheated CPU. One way to check this is to put a freezer clamp
(the kind used for cooling beer on a picnic) beside the CPU and start
heavy compiling. If the problem goes away it probably is a cooling
problem.

Don't forget to take out the freezer clamp, moisture inside a computer
is likely to cause more problems. :-)

hi!

we are behind a ipchains firewall. and one of our new problems to solve
is the following:

realplayer works on my machine - but for me all ports are open. i
configured realplayer to use only http traffic and to use our proxy.

on my maschine the streaming works.

on the other maschines the realplayer can not connect to the streaming
target. the configuration of the real player ist the same. the other
clients can only use port 3128.

question: how should i configure the firewall (or realplayer) , so that
normal clients can use the streaming??

For the record, it does, but you may wish to be a little careful with
it. It runs on top of X. If you are root and type control-panel into
an xterm, you will get a button bar. Select the button for Networking
and you will get a dialog box to set up all the networking. The
default tab should be "NAMES". The top line should be filled in with
your host name and the second line should have your domain name.

IIRC, the main trouble you will get if you change either of these is
that X will soon drop dead because it is still running with the old
names (although you should be able to commit the change of host name
or domain name). So be ready to restart X because nothing on your
desktop will work.

As Peter suggests, it is better to do these at the command line level
(i.e., logout of X entirely) to avoid this problem by editing
/etc/HOSTNAME (probably useless) and /etc/sysconfig/network to look
something like mine:

valinux:root[/etc/sysconfig]# cat network
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=no
HOSTNAME=valinux
DOMAINNAME=localdomain
GATEWAY=
GATEWAYDEV=
valinux:root[/etc/sysconfig]#

(If I do hosthame -f, I get: "valinux.localdomain".)

I forget how to get that problem, but it drove me crazy.

The way not to do it is to somehow get a start button and press
Panel->Create New Panel, because it will last only until you log out
and then disappear. I tried that first, though I do not recall how I
got that far.

Center-Click on desktop. Select Gnome Apps->Help System.
Select GNOME USER'S GUIDE and examine 11.) Resetting the GNOME
session.

I discovered this by hit and miss techniques when in a panic. There
are a few more details to deal with that I cannot remember, but that
will be a start.

Good luck.

You mean IE? Ick.

We use VMware here and like it very much. How exactly did it fuck your
LAN? As a first guess, if you set it up for bridged networking, you'd
better give the virtual machine a unique IP address...

Note that VMware won't let you run accelerated GL apps.

When installing OpenSSL you have the option of creating shared libraries.
The INSTALL file says that if your system knows what is needed to build
shared libraries they are not currently created by default, but giving the
option "shared" will get them created. The "shared" option is described as
"In addition to the usual static libraries, create shared libraries on
platforms where it's supported".

QUESTIONS: What are shared libraries? Why might I want them (instead of
static libraries)? Why does it create both when you specify "shared", (ie:
rather than just shared libraries)?

A usefull command is apropos.
This scans though a man database and lists all packages that refer to a
certain keyword.

"apropos images" for example comes up with a long list of programs and
routines that manipulate images, for example, with a brief description of
what the program/routine does.

Connection refused means there's no talk daemon running on your machine.
talkd is normally wrapped in inetd, so you need to edit /etc/inetd.conf and
remove the hash from the beginnning of the line containing in.talkd, save
the file and restart inetd.

If you can't get it to boot from the CD, use the RedHat boot floppy --
it does the same thing. I always do it with the CD in the drive, but

Hi comunity,

I have just installed a Linux in my Pentium II. This time
the whole HDD i have given to our favourite operating system.
When i installed it i decided for the lilo not to have a prompt
and to start booting with a timeout of 0 centiseconds. The install went
smooth and i configured sound modem and mail without trouble. But now
at random, when i switch the computer on i get some seriour problems.
I will describe what the scoop is about: The BIOS checks for RAM and
verifyes the 128 MBytes i have in the motherboard splited in two dimms.
Then it recognices all peripherals and gives to me a report. At this
time the BIOS should look for a bootable device, ... should, but
apparently it doesn't. It just waits, waits and waits... and i get
frustrated, frustrated and frustrated until i switch the computer off
and on again. Maybe in one of my restarts and after the first 10 secs of
frustration lilo appears and starts booting linux.
I am beginning to suspect weird things, such as that the install process
has screwed up my BIOS by means of a bug in the local time settings or
something worse.... what can i do other than trying to update my
BIOS??, any ideas??, please send me whatever idea or info you can think
off before i kill my motherboard with an overdose of switching.

Cluse:

ps/2 mouse
external modem at COM1 in DOS
ZIP100 unit in the parallel port.
S3 Virge 4 megs. GX2; ( in the AGP)

Thanks a lot for your help.

I cannot tell you the BIOS version, because since last succesful boot i
would not dare switching off my linux box, but my mtherboard is:
