Subject: help with recompiling kernel 2.2.16-22 in RedHat 7
Date: 11 Dec 2000 03:32:19 GMT
Hi Everyone,
I am in desparate help. I am having problem with recompiling kernel
2.2.16-22 (the one that comes with RedHat 7) and it does not work.
I change the Makefile in /usr/src/linux from gcc to kgcc; however,
that still doesn't work. I recompile the kernel twice and these are
the two different error messages I got each time:
Please help me. Thanks.

He may not have a problem, fdisk can cause problems in that respect, I had a
situation where dos fdisk refused to delete a linux partition, I had to use
the linux fdisk program to get around that, I've heard some people say it's
a certain version on fdisk. However I believe it has something to do with
extended and logical partitions, as those are the only types I ever had
problems with, primaries died easily.

No, you do not have to reboot. This is Linux!
Try:
/etc/init.d/rc.d/nfs restart
on the servers and
/etc/init.d/rc.d/netfs restart
on the clients.

The tcsh supports "$REMOTEHOST" environment variable to get
the hostname/ipaddress of remote host in Red Hat 7.0.
But others UNIX/Linux, their csh/tcsh don't support this variable.
Please teach me how to get the remote hostname as a environment
variable when I login. Because I want to set X remote DISPLAY
automatically. such as in ~/.cshrc:
setenv DISPLAY "$REMOTEHOST":0

I installed the latest apache versionon my RH7 machine and started it.
Dutifully several httpd processes were there.
However, on the localhost I try to access
http://localhost/
and its not listening. telnet locahost 80 says connection refused.
(telnet localhost 23 pops up a prompt...)
netstat -l shows no http processes.
Do I need to add a file in /etc/xinetd.d to get this to work? Can
someone post an example file?
Thanks & Hug,

Subject: lost file on erased partition
Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 04:00:13 GMT
hello:)
shortly: how do i find a (text) file that lived on a ext2fs partition
that got deleted in fdisk?
the file lived happily, until one day win98 was to be installed and
f**ked up the partition table.
when win98 trashed the partitiontable all partitions were removed from
fdisk in linux (apparently they couldn't be mounted).
after that the only thing installed is the win98.
win98 is now installed on hda1 (0-4.2gig of the disk).
the file was in the extended hda2 (6-8.5gig of the disk).
so this all happened because the vfat partition was to be made
smaller... from 6 to 4.2 gig.
so the partition is gone, but the file should still be there,
somewhere, on the disk.
the disk is a 13.5gig IDE drive.
so, does anyone know how to reach that info?
i do have the first 3.5k of the file, which i believe was about 10k
when it got killed.
the ext2fs partition had 2048byte clusters.
are there any tools for win98 to try finding that file?
i HAVE looked, found none though. perhaps you know?
(thought i could try this first before messing with partitions)
or i could carefully make a partition right after hda1, about 1gig so
it doesnt trespass on the old hda2, install linux, and use some tool
from there. but which?
it's an important file, give me a miracle:)
TIA / alex k
ps.
before:
hda1 6gig vfat
hda2 2.5gig (extended, ext2fs + swap)
hda3 4.5gig ufs (extended/slice)
now:
hda1 4.2gig vfat
that's all.

I just did a file copy to an NFS drive and I want to make sure that I

I used
cp -axv /dev /mnt/vol00
cp -axv /bin /mnt/vol00
cp -axv/usr /mnt/vol00
etc . . .
Doing some sampling, it appears that everything copied okay.
What I am looking for is the equivalent to this

Anybody seen anything like that? To be honest I don't

Without knowing more about your needs and reasons for considering a
change, it's hard to give a coherent response. In general, qmail is
easier to configure than is sendmail using its sendmail.cf file, but
using m4 and the sendmail.mc file helps sendmail a lot. qmail is
supposed to scale better to very heavy mail loads, but I've no personal
experience with that. qmail also has a better (but shorter) security
history -- but sendmail's been pretty clean for the past couple of
years, so maybe most of the biggies have all been found and excised.
IMHO, the biggest drawback to qmail if you've already got sendmail is
that qmail uses a different format for storing user messages, which
means you'll have to update mail readers and POP or IMAP servers. OTOH,
this different format has some advantages that can be useful in some
situations.
If you want a fairly easy swap-in replacement for sendmail, Postfix may
make a better choice, because it's more compatible in usage options,
mail spool format, etc. Without knowing what you're looking for, though,
it is hard to make a recommendation.

Most likely. Mandrake, for some reason, likes to default to DMA off on my
system and many others I've seen. Try "man hdparm" for more info, but
"hdparm -d1 -X66 /dev/hda" should do the trick for you. (-X66 assumes you
have a UDMA 66 drive)
Running "hdparm -t /dev/hda" before and after will show you the
difference. Mine goes from 4.5 MB/s to 22.5 MB/s.
You can append it at the end of /etc/rc.sysinit to enable DMA at boot with
a couple of lines like
echo Enabling UDMA
exec hdparm -d1 -X66 /dev/hda

There's nothing that duplicates the Windog rotating 3-d clock, but
xscreensaver running xdaliclock makes a nice saver, quite apart
from the standard xscreensaver goodies.
