mount
without any arguments will show you what's mounted at the moment.
To find out what's mounted at boot time, have a look at /etc/fstab.
It's all in there.

I need to send a mail to 200 persons.
I have to change the first line of each mail to put in the right name.
How am I doing this best?
With a shell script combining two files, the one with the mail the other
with the addresses and names (read line by line) and then sending it with
the mail program?

Importing the data from MS-Access to for instance PostgreSQL is quite
easily done. With ODBC you can attach the postgreSQL tables in your
access database and read out everything from your MS Access tables into
PostgreSQL from MS Access.
You can then still use MS Access as a front end and at the same time
share your data among other platforms/development environments.

Hello,
I had a clean installation of Mandrake 7.0 and tried the 7.2 upgrade
yesterday. What a disaster!
The upgrade program is duff in many places. It even got stuck in
a loop during the X configuration, asking me the same questions
over and over again. I had to click Exit Install to stop it.
Now my idea of an upgrade (with experience of Solaris) is that the
OS is upgraded and everything keeps working the same as it did before.
Not so with Mandrake 7.2!
I could give you a big list of problems but I got so annoyed I wasn't
in the mood to write everything down.
First, it broke the sound system which worked fine in 7.0.
Second, the login screen has got worse:
* There are no options for shutdown / restart.
* The only window manager choice is KDE, but it starts IceWM !!!!!!
It seems to have thrown away all my desktop settings. I want KDE
but there's no obvious way of getting it!
Finally, most programs chosen from the applications menu either never
start or I can get them to crash within 30 seconds of use. (Not a
permissions problem, I logged in as root.)
For example, I just started KWord, right clicked in the main window,
and it died instantly!!! Of the programs which actually deigned to
run, I found most crashed very quickly through simple use.
I never thought I would say this since I am a complete unix (Solaris)
fanatic, but the whole system feels so amateurish compared to Windows!
All in all, I am not a happy bunny. I consider my system to be
completely unusable since the upgrade :-(
Andrew.

While executing the KILL scripts, Red Hat does the following
checks (look at /etc/rc.d/rc file):
1. If the script is there (symlink is OK)
2. It isn't a rpmorig or rpmnew script
3. Checks a LOCK at /var/lock/subsys/$subsys (where $subsys is your
service name)
I guess you're not writing a lockfile in /var/lock/subsys/ at startup
and hence being ignored at shutdown.
Hope this gives an idea what to do,
Kousik.

On my 2nd HD, I use both Win32 and Linux. I've noticed that at least
on my machine, Linux doesn't support long file names. Everything is
8.3 format (i.e., filename.ext becomes filena~1.ext).
Is this something I need to change in setting up, or is it a config
file somewhere? In other words, do I have a problem, or is this the
way things are supposed to be?
Thanks in advance.

Yes. Those of us with consoles are OK, of course, but if you've got a
rack mounted PC or something, then you really want to have an
automatic fallback---with lilo -R provides, as someone else pointed
out.
<http://slashdot.org/> just recently had an announcement of a kernel
module which does what you originally asked for: it loads a kernel
image into memory, and boots from it. I haven't looked to see how
dangerous it might be.

Correction:
If the BIOS does support disks larger than 8 GB, it might be better to
manually set the disk to
16320 cylinders, 16 heads, 63 sectors,
and then switch to LBA mode. This is the largest number of cylinders
that will correctly translate into LBA mode for a BIOS that does not
support disks > 8 GB.

Well, this is not exactly a shell script, but a perl script.
It should do anyway.
#!/usr/bin/perl
#spammer
open MAIL,"<mail.file" or die "cannot open mail file";
@mail=<MAIL>;
close MAIL;
open ADDR,"<address.file" or die "cannot open address file";
while (<ADDR>) {
chomp;
($addr,@name)=split / /,$_;
open MTA,"|mail $addr" or die "cannot open mail pipe";
print MTA "To: ",$addr,"\nSubject: ",$ARGV[0],"\n\n";
print MTA "Dear ",@name,", please enjoy the following:\n";
# ^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
# \- change this to suit your needs
print MTA @mail;
close MTA;
}
#end spammer
This will read the mail (without headers) from mail.file and a list
of addresses and names from address.file.
It must be formatted with exactly one space between address and name
like this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] John Doe
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Ludger Oser
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Donald Ummy
Then it uses the 'mail' program to send the mails with a subject given
as the first command line argument.
A sample mail will look like this:
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: What you put there
Dear Ludger Oser, please enjoy the following:
Your text comes here...
when called as: spammer "What you put there"
It's not very good and certainly not fool-proof but it should get you

Is that when you mount your Windows (FAT formatted) disk?
If so, you probably mounted it as 'msdos' type. Try mounting it as
'vfat'
by typing mount -tvfat /dev/yourdiskdrive /mnt as root or change the
entry in your /etc/fstab from 'msdos' to 'vfat'.

Interesting. Let me give that a try. The problem is that this program
isn't really a currently running service....it's just a script.

Hello world,
I want to add a little non-portable eye-candy to a strictly text-mode
only application that would require hacking the text mode fonts. I could
use setfont(5) to change them, but that only takes entire font sets
and adds the overhead of calling an external program. I only want to
change a few characters at a time, and do it fast, so I can make two
dialog box entries scroll into each other[1].
All sources I have seen caution against using ioctl primitives to do
that, saying how undocumented/ephemeral/foot-injury-inducing they are,
and that you should use POSIX functions instead. But I can find no
info on what those functions are -- and indeed setfont itself seems to
use ioctl. So, what could I do so that at least I'll be compatible with
future Linuxen?
[1] Yes, that's the sort of person I am.

If you want to use the new added hd for Linux only, you can set it
in the BIOS to "not installed".
That way LLLO will work as before, and DOS/Windoze will not know
about it.
Since the kernel does not need the BIOS after booting, the hd will
be usable under Linux with out any problems.
Well -- it *may* fail to correctly autodetect it's parameters.
You may have to tell the kernel about the size and geometry
via the "lilo.conf" file.

My ATAPI CD-R insists upon generating 'device not ready' errors when
there's no disc present, and I think that's due to the GNOME CD applet
polling it.
Well, that's fair enough, but what I'm not happy about is the fact that
it causes the kernel to /log/ the error to /var/log/messages every second
(or more frequently than that).
I have the RHG6.2 default amount of logging set to go to /messages (not
much), and I'm loathe to disable it all in case I miss stuff I *do* want.
Any ideas on how to filter out the ATAPI errors? (aside from not running
the applet - which I may have to do)

Well, now I have this old P-120 on debian 2.1, No xwindows, just command
line.
X windows looks like a hassle, and I didn't install linux to get xwindows. I
am a student on semester break and for my senior project I want to qrite web
apps in perl. I don't know much perl or linux.
But I only have so much time.
So I want to concentrate on the Perl as much as possible. So that is why I
didn't try to setup X, also I don't know anything about the video card on
this computer.
So, I was able to seup wvdial. It does dial into my ISP, and seems to be
working. What happens is that it winds up finally outputting a line saying
"running pppd" or something; the modem seems to be connecting, etc.and
before it saying "runnig pppd" it outputs various messages, no errors etc.
And I alt-f2 to anohter virtaul window and try to start Lynx. so that I can
verify I am online. But Lynx won't start. Do I need X to run Lynx?
What can I run while the pppd is running on wvdial in order to verify that I
am online? I assume I need to switch to another virtual window in order to
run another app while wvdial is running?
What I plan on making in perl in Spring are things like web clients, etc.
Also I hope to set up Apache server and write server side stuff, cgi scripts
etc in Perl .Will I eventaully need to set up X windows in order to run
Apache?
TIA
