Hello all,
Anyone know how to run fsck interactively? I would like to add the -c
switch to the startup script that runs fsck so that every now and then
when I am rebooting I can check for bad blocks, if I want to.

I'm trying to set my path to recognize the jdk1.3 I just installedm,
so that the change will be permanant from boot to boot.
I open the file /etc/profile and change the path to this:
PATH="$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin"
But when I echo $PATH, the jdk path that I added doesn't appear.
I've tried logging out and logging in again but still nothing.
Any help appreciated. BTW I'm using Redhat 7.

its free (as in beer) to use the command-line version, but shareware for
the GUI controls (pretty inexpensive though)

Right. You won't save time on features you don't use.

So what? The kernel is _not_ the bottleneck. Nor is the X server.
Gnome probably does not make a difference in functionality and most
people can do with out all the bloat. The OP should try a
light(er)weight window manager like fvwm or afterstep. And then keep
scaling down until the system reaches at an acceptable speed. 32 Megs
should provide plenty of room to run X without all of these memory
hogs weighing it down.

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = (unset),

are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

Hi all,
I got a cheap laptop recently (running Win98) and I am
trying to let it access the network. My server is a
RedHat Linux 7 box. The ethernet card is just too
expensive for the cheap laptop so I am trying to
connect 2 computers with a serial cable. I followed
some doc on the web and got getty working on my linux
box. With pppd and a chat script, I also "fooled" the
Win98 box that it's dialled a number and connected to
a dialup server successfully. However, pppd doesn't
run successfully during the login; it complains that

Doubtful, as the error message will show up every time you try to
mount a DOS partition without having support for the vfat filesystem
loaded.
Try "insmod vfat" first.

Often. Didn't you ever type in a long command, and then realize that
before you execute it, you need to execute another command first? If
you put a "#" at the beginning of the command line, and hit enter, the
commandline will not be executed, but will be saved to your command history.
Then after you execute the forgotten command, you can retrieve the saved
command, delete the # and execute it.
(If you're using vi-editing in the shell, you simply have to hit <Esc>
and then the #-key, and you'll automatically insert a "#" at the beginning
of the line.)

Nikola,
One way to stop this message is to set one of those environment variables,
for example set
LC_ALL=C
in your bash shell and the messages will go away.
For a full answer have a look at
perldoc perllocale
especially in the section "LOCALE PROBLEMS" .

Hello,
I am porting programs from SCO to Linux RedHat.
I have many IBM graphical characters in the code to draw boxes for
example (double stricke chars, etc...).
When I download the sources on the Linux box, I can't see these chars

I tried many different TERM configuration without success.
Does someone has an idea how to solve this problem.
I thank you in advanve.

You didn't mention which distro you found this on... I'd be curious.
On some distros, I've seen something like :"su:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin".
The idea being here, that if you booted-up into single-user mode
(runlevel 1), you'd be prompted for a root password. This is to protect
that fact that Linux is usually installed by default with runlevel 1
being enabled from the lilo boot prompt, allowing anyone with physical
access to the machine the ability to access it with root authority
absent the root password.
I'm wondering if attaching sulogin to runlevels 0 and 6 are to
request a root password in the event that shutdown is invoked by
a non-root user. (But without some experimentation, I'm not sure
if this would work.)

Hi there,
".exe" is used in M$-WinXX for executable files. I don`t know what
happens with wine, vmware or anything else, if You want do make a file
executable under linux, look at the manpage of chmod.
I think, this special file doesn`t work on a linux-box.

I just compiled a new kernel with vfat static in it and got no errors
any more....
It seems I got confused by all these kernels in my /boot directory and
accidently activated one of my "does it boot?"-kernels instead of the
final one...(wich has static vfat supp.)
But just noticed that it's not possible to load any module.
("loop.o not found")
I heard, that module-management is changed since 2.4... ?
If so, what do I have to change?
