Ron,

Thanks, that was the problem. It is working now.

The only exception is that with SuSE the file name is .profile. That is where
I made the change.

I have a relatively simple plan that was working with Suse 6.1, now I
have installed Suse 7.0. All I want to do is let my #1 computer access
the internet through my #2 computer which is connected to the internet
via cable ISP. Now before I was using Squid Proxy server and added a
couple od ipchains that allowed my #1 computer through to the internet
with its IP Masqueraded, showing the servers IP instead of its own.
Suse 7 does not come with squid and I tried loading it off the old disks
and installing it but now the permissions are all not working and will
start and continue to run. I have tried configuring
/etc/rc.d.config/rc.firewal.config but I cannot seem to acces the
internet because I am using Netscape with proxy server setting that
needs
a port number to connect to.
Now this is where I am not sure how to configure what...
routing,ipchains,firewals,ip-forwarding, or anything. Sorry this is so
long but I wanted to have all the info needed to have an answer.
thanks for any help.

switchdesk must keep its *OWN* list of window managers, and they may not
necessarily correspond to those that you have installed on your machine.
I don't know where it keeps them (you could try a 'locate switchd' --
even a search on a partial key could turn up something) or if the manual
s or docs mention its whereabouts.

I gave up the search as soon as I figured out what .xinitrc was and how I
could tweak it myself :-)

Hi,

I am a new yorker running Red Hat Linux 7.0. Red Hat 7 froze and i
couldn't even cntrl-alt-backspace my way out of X-windows. and a software
reboot wouldn't work. So I hit the reset button on my PC, did a hardware
reset and then Red Hat claimed there were errors on my drive when booting
up and asked me to run FSCK. How can i get my hardisk back. I type "fsck"
and it does nothing except hang. What should i do. what is the exact

What purpose does ls serve??? And what if ls is an

for i in *.png; do mv $i $i-old; done

Looks find to me.

Subject: can't boot into GUI or CLI
Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 22:07:48 -0700

After copying some files to my zip disk I found I couldn't unmount the
drive (device busy) even though I was in the /mnt directory. Not being
aware of "fuser" the only thing I could think of was to reboot. Big
mistake! The shutdown messages showed a failure to unmount hdd1 and when
it booted it showed hda6 and 7 (/ and /home) not cleanly unmounted and
forced check which both passed. When it finished I was in an X window, no
GUI (which it should have been) _or_ CLI. Rebooting into run level 3 gave
me a CLI and "startx" brought up Gnome. All apps seem o.k. Using Gnome's
menu logout returns to CLI instead of graphical login and lists several
Gtk and GnomeUI warnings and a command prompt.

I was going to post the log from the reboot but I just went through it
with a fine tooth comb and I'll be damned if I can find it. I did see
that some of the entries were out of time sequence. Not sure what's going
on.

Any pointers or suggestions on how to boot directly into run level 5 and
get the GUI back would be appreciated. In addition, if I knew which files
were corrupted, I could do a full backup excluding those files and
reinstall.

You will need to do the following as "root or "su" to root and install
it by following these steps.

chown 0.0 so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
# this makes it owned by root

chmod 755 so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
# make it executable

"cd" into the directory where the file is and run:

./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin/net

Install it where ever you want it, I will use "/usr/local/office52" for
example purposes. Once you have it installed you may need to change the
path to where you installed it in the next step.

Make a symlink so normal users can use it.

ln -s /usr/local/office52/program/soffice /usr/bin/soffice

The only thing left is to login as a user and run.

soffice

For each user that runs "soffice" for the first time It will
automatically install the user files.

It was the best solution I could think of (until now), and of course, I
did not consider special cases. BTW, if ls was an alias for "ls -xF",
it makes no difference in this case as png's are regular files which
have special file indicators as for I know.

You must have missed it. Suse 7.0 comes with two versions of squid. From
there FTP server:

250-squid2.rpm: Squid V2.2 WWW proxy server (stable version)
250-squid23.rpm: Squid V2.3 WWW proxy server (new version)

Why do you not simply disable the proxy setting of netscape while you
have no proxy running?

With ip masqerading, you do not need to do proxying in Netscape. Try
turning it off.

on it?

Try format another floppy 'fdformat /dev/fd0', create a filesystem
'mke2fs /dev/fd0', then mount it 'mount /mnt/floppy'.

Since you are able to "startx" I would be tempted to try a "init 1" then
once you get a prompt "init 5" that will take it all the way down to
runlevel 1 and then back into runlevel 5 without a reboot but if there
is something screwed up it may not work.

Or you could try and just do a "init 5" at a prompt as root but again if
something is screwed up it may not work.

If you do decide to try it you might want to check that the zip disk is
unmounted first.

LILO is known to get confused if you mix SCSI and IDE. It sometimes
helps to add:

disk = /dev/sda
        bios=0x80

disk = /dev/hda
        bios=0x81

to lilo.conf

Depending on the kind of bootdisk, you should be able to do:

linux hda=...

at the LILO prompt.
