Because you have no * after the first character or group, so you are
matching 1 character, plus 0 or more characters. If your put a * after
the first group then they would match the same (although redundant).

[A-Za-z]*[A-Za-z]* would match like [A-Za-z]*

[A-Za-z][A-Za-z]* could usually be written [A-Za-z]+

B/c RE's are (usually (always?)) greedy. That means, they match the very
first instance they encounter.

I) [A-Za-z]*
II) [A-Za-z][A-Za-z]*
     ---a-- ----b---

(I) will start and when it encounters the empty string, it matches (0 or
more alpha-chars) and terminates.

(II) will start and first look for any character matching (a). If such a
character is found it will continue searching for 0 or more
alpha-characters (which is (b)). Since (a) needs to be matched *before*
anything else, and (a) does not include the empty string, (II) will NOT
match the empty string, even though (b) does.

Let me put that another way. The fact that [A-Za-z]* matches with
zero characters when it also matches with one or more characters
seems to violate the following rule: "A regular expression matches
the longest string of characters that match the pattern."

Apparently, my understanding of the rule is flawed. Would someone
please enlighten me?

I have mounted the old drive as /old but when I cd into that directory, I get
a bunch of System.map, boot.b, vmlinuz files and only one dir...lost+found. I
would have exected to see /old/bin, /old/home, /old/usr etc....

Is is possible to get at my data in this fashion? Please let me know.

Thanks everyone!

A quick Netscape search for filerunner found it immediately at:
http://www.cd.chalmers.se/~hch/filerunner.html

It is sort of like WS_FTP in Windows. It might even be on your Linux CD,
but you start it as 'fr'. I used it in the past with window managers that
did not come with many tools, but I use gFTP in gnome and KDE. Although,
I more commonly use ncftp because it also works in the console.

And a quick search for 'git file manager' returned many links including:

chmod -R 000 /lib would do that...

I go with the fellow who says that you should run fsck... but unless you
are familiar enough with it that you understand you should only run it
in singe user mode, it might be best read up on it before you try to run
it.

You might also look for other oddities in your logs before you assume
that
the file system is getting flakey.

In particular it is interesting to me that these (if this is all off
them)
are all associated with curses. Curses is used by many command line
proggies,
Pine amoung them. Curses is a text based windowing library.

Anybody using "autoRPM" instead of RedHat's "up2date"?

autoRPM gives you some latitude about installing automatically or
manually, and generates a list of files you need to update that are
available.

Just wondered if it was in widespread use or not.

I don't know what your problem is, but it doesn't seem likely it has
anything to do with your Linux partitions. There is something messed
up about your master boot record or your BIOS, but I have no idea
what. Or you may be using some other boot loader you didn't mention
since you have both Win 98 and Win 2000. You have to straighten
that out. You may even have to reinstall one or the other or
both.

Boot from a DOS boot disk,
fdisk /mbr
reboot with same disk and start PQMAGIC..
make sure you have your windows partition set active (can also be done with
fdisk)

Single clicking Control-MB1 opens netscape on my system. I don't know
how to configure it to do something else.

Actually, that's not true. It opens netscape if I don't have an
instance of mozilla open, but if I do, it opens the URL in mozilla.

I've tried to ftp large files (above the 2GB limit) between two redhat
7.0 machines with a 2.4 kernel, but the ftp client tells me that the
file is to large, and as a result I have to split the file on the first
machine and cat it together again on the second.

Is this caused by the server or the client (or both)? Is there ftp
software for linux which does not have this limitation?

Jan, I don't doubt that you're right and I certainly observe
it to work that way. But this "greedy" behavior contradicts
the rule that regular expressions match the LONGEST string of
characters that match the pattern. Is my understanding of this
"rule" wrong?
