Actually color ls implements the standard scheme. The
"Standard" for ANSI terminals is X3.64 (ISO 6429). But in fact
there are several "standards" and everyone has their choice!
You can find a good bit of documentation (probably all that
you'll ever need actually) in the console_codes(4) man page.
Xterm and ncurses both have documentation which helps to
understand terminal attributes too. And I would suggest that
Thomas E. Dickey, the maintainer of ncurses (who reads and posts
to this and other Linux/Unix newsgroups frequently) is probably
the best source of arbitration on any "what's it all mean" type
of question.

But I think the real problem is now likely becoming apparant to
you. The documentation is good and it exists. But it resides
in the man pages for many different programs, all of which have
to be generally understood before the big picture becomes clear.
Ncurses, terminfo, termcap, xterm, console_codes, infocmp, tic,
and probably some others that I'm not remembering, all need to
be understood; and of course many of those are large and complex
man pages too.

(Another man page to look at, regarding ls at least, is
dircolors(1). Once you have given that and console_codes(4) the
once over, if you didn't find enough to clear up any given hex
codes you saw ls use, post something here and I'm sure someone
will be able to provide the exact explanation of whatever it
is.)

Be aware that any program which does not use either terminfo or
termcap for terminal attributes, is broken. It is an absolute
abomination to hard code terminal attributes into any
application. However, termcap is of BSD origins and terminfo
originated with AT&T.  They provide much the same functionality;
however, terminfo will eventually completely push termcap aside.
But termcap does exist for legacy apps.

The question of Is Free BSD Linux.. is best answered as no.
The kernels are different source code. However... most of the same
tools exist in both systems. gcc X11 etc etc.

I do not know about the MACH kernel.

Software for Linux can be PORTED to BSD provided the source code can re-
compile on BSD. Take a look at some source code packages (vi emacs etc)
you will find compiler directives for BSD LINUX etc. I would not
expect to have true binary compatability between the two OS's.

UNIX was developed by AT&T back in the 70's it is a commercial product
and is sold as BINARY (run only) package. Many companies have adopted
UNIX to their hardware platform. (HP hpux, IBM aix to name two). The
copyright for UNIX is now owned by NOVELL (it think).
Linux was developed by Linus Torvalis. Basically Linus wanted a kernel
to play with and he wrote one. Using the internet as an exchange of
idea tool GNU (Richard Stallman at MIT) and Linus collaborated and the
vapors distilled to the Linux of today. Red Hat and others just
repackage and support the installation process of their Linux Product.
Is Linux Unix? you asked... No. Linux is Free(dom) ware. Most of the
system is distributed via source code and the OS can be re-compiled at
will. Also most linux tools are GNU Copy Lefted - you may re-distribute
and modify programs. Try that with UNIX and you better have soap-on-a-
rope.

Hope this helps

I'm trying to upgrade to Linux 2.4.1 and still have ReiserFS support. I
run 2.2.17 right now.

My problem might be simple, but I just haven't found any information
about it.

When I do a "make xconfig" for 2.4.1 and enter the "Filesystems" menu, I
can see the ReiserFS alternative, but it's disabled, so I cannot choose
to compile it either as a module or as a part of the kernel.
When I do a "make menuconfig", I can't see the ReiserFS alternative at
all.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have downloaded and installed Netscape 6 on my LM 7.1 system. When I

Check the place where you gor the kernel to see if they also have
modules.

You could always build them yourself from the kernel source if you
can't find them prebuilt.

True only if X is available; if not, tn3270 is about the only game in town:

I have versions of tn3270 running on machines specifically for times I'm

BTW, I found the -noasynch option is required for most sessions to avoid
the curious and obnoxious "I/O possible" crash starting up tn3270.

I can't speak to Unixware or Solaris; I've never used them and don't
know their requirements. I do know that NT must have at least part of
itself on a primary partition on the first physical disk. Therefore, NT
on the second physical disk will only work if it and Win98 share a
primary FAT-16 partition on the first disk. The WINNT directory would go
on D: (or E: or higher) on the second disk, but a few critical files
would still go on C:. I've seen a lot of reports of problems with this
sort of setup, though -- it tends to go south pretty easily. A better
solution seems to be putting both NT and Win98 on primary partitions on
the first physical disk and then using some third-party boot loader
(such as Linux's LILO, System Commander, Boot Magic, or the like) to
switch between OSs.

(Actually, there ARE products that claim to boot Microsoft OSs entirely
from a second physical disk, but I don't have any URLs offhand, and I've
never tried them.)

> 2. Can I have Win98 on one disk and all the other OSs on the other?

With the caveats above, yes. Certainly Linux can reside entirely on the
second disk.

> 3. If not, what OSs would I *have* to put on HD1?

Part of NT, as above. I don't know what Solaris or Unixware requires.

> 4. What is the proper installation order?

As a general rule, it's best to do Microsoft OSs first, since they
sometimes overwrite the MBR or reformat partitions of other OSs. It's
probably best to use PartitionMagic or Win9x's FDISK to create
partitions for all the OSs, giving them appropriate partition types.
(You may need to boot the Linux installer and use LILO to change a few
partition types, particularly if you use FDISK.) THEN install the
Microsoft OSs, then the others. With luck, this will keep the setup
static enough for WinNT, which tends to react badly to changes to its
partition table after it's been installed, while keeping the Microsoft
OSs from damaging anything else during installation.

> 5. At what point do I install System commander 2000 to assist me?

If you've got it, I'd install it right after installing Win98, which I'd
install first. Actually, I suppose you could use it to set up the
partitions initially.

One other thing you should consider: You'll probably want a partition in
which to exchange data between your OSs. This should probably be a
FAT-16 partition, which is a sort of lowest-common-denominator that most
OSs can understand.

> Well, I'm sure I'll have more questions when I try this out, but

Although it doesn't cover Solaris or Unixware explicitly, you might find
my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/) helpful. It's got four chapters
devoted to partitioning, and more to filesystems, data exchange,
installation, and so on.

Server running new kernel, clients running any kernel -> no go
Server running kernel <=2.2.17, clients running any kernel -> works OK.

I can nfs-mount ext2 partitions with the new kernels without difficulty;
the problem only occurs with VFAT shares.

I will check out unfsd, but I hope that the kernel nfs problem gets

`microemacs' is a small-footprint emacs clone, isn't it? I should

I predict unwanted attention from Marvel Comics. Ask the maintainers
of Windowmaker and Saw[mill|fish] about their experiences in the trademark
arena.

Hi,
I thought that my old kernel, xserver, and kde will work fine after a
faillure attempt to compile the new 2.4.0 kernel, but I was wrong...
I 'll try to describe my story as quikly as I can... (my english sucks
sometimes..)
After the recompilation, my machine was refused to boot... anyway I booted
up with my old kernel but something very weird happend (I 'm new to
Linux)...
When it attempts to start startx, kdestart, xinit or whatever (I 'm not sure
how it works exactly) it fails and it boots without graphical environment...
Hitting Alt-F7 I see a black screen and a blinking cursor...
xinit logs me into grahical mode, but there is only the konsole there..
Netscape loads fine...
/var/log/messages says nothing and so dmesg...
if I type startkde is says something about segmentation error and core
dumped...

I have Mandrake 7.1

any idea??

thanx in advance
Konstantinos
