Hi,

I need to create a CD completely identical to the original one. I tried
using xcdroast, and then used "verify CD" comparing the image (not *.iso,
some other format) to the original CD it was created from and,
alternatively, to the copy.

The program reported that the copy is a different CD, so that it can not be
compared. Apparently, the copy wasn't completely identical to the original
CD, otherwise xcdroast wouldn't be able to tell that it's a different CD.
My quess is that xcdroast's "Duplicate CD" option is geared towards copying
audio CDs and not data CDs.

Does anyone know how to duplicate data CDs? Or how to create an *.iso image
of a CD (if this will help)?

Thanks in advance.

Bzzzt. If you do a 'ps aufx' while it's going, you'll see that all it does
is 'dd' the data off the CD into a single file. That's a bit-for-bit
copy. I never bother with Xcdroast's verify function, and I've never
had any problems with it.

Well, the best way *is* what Xcdroast does in the background. So, just
use "Duplicate CD", or use dd and cdrecord yourself.

I never had any problems with xcdroast, it's only a frontend to mkisofs, cdrecord,
cdrdao and may be other I can't remember in the moment, like all other GUI
cdwriting
tools are. You could of course try those out, there is a CD-Writing HowTo on
linuxdoc.org.

Hello people,
Let me expose my problem on a strange behaviour that did DOS my own
machine

I'm using Mandrake 7.2 and everything runs just fine, except that crond
can't send e-mail of it tasks and he complains "/sbin/sendmail not found
can't send mail etc etc". "sendmail not installed) So i had this idea
(not specially brillant but" I did a link from named /sbin/sendmail and
linked it to the /bin/mail (i think its located there).

When cron runned some hours after for it's normal security scan,
following things happend

First, my disk begun to work, not much but you could hear it working .
Second my CPU usage was 100%, and my system was slower and slower.
So i decided to "ps -aux" and find out that there were 3 processes
send-mail. So i just "kill -9 8010 8011 8012"
BUT it returned
"No such pid 8010 8011 8012"
I was a bit surprised,
then i did another "ps -aux" and saw again 3 send-mail processes with
different pid.
They had respawn
i tried 4 times but nothing.

My machine was slower and slower

I decided to shutdown
It begun the shutdown proccess but was unable to unmount the drives, and
stuck there for about 1 hour, after what i just preced the off button.

can anyone explain me what happend here ???

Thank you in advance

PS no need to answer "why the F did you make a link etc etc, i said it
wasn't pretty smart"

The HOWTO pages for partitioning I found only deal with fdisk, not
cfdisk. The *man* pages for fdisk say to use cfdisk and not fdisk if
possible. Go figure. The man pages for cfdisk don't explain adaquately
how to make logical/extended partitions.

Here's what I want to do on a 10-gig disk:

I've got a 500M primary partition hda1
I've got a 40 M swap partition hda2

I want to split up 9.5 gigs of remaining space into 1-gig linux
partitions (one will be 1.5 gigs).

I've tried making hda5-13 in cfdisk. It makes the logical partitions,
but I see no way to make a containing extended partition.

I've tried making the 9 gigs a primary partition and changing the type
to extended, but cfdisk returns an error saying I can't do that.

I've tried mounting the logical partitions I could create, but I get an
error.

Does cfdisk not need to make an extended partition into which to put
the logical partitions? How does it do this?

 How do I do this?

Redirecting STDOUT and/or STDERR to /dev/null should silence the
script. Lots of my crons look like:

1. How did you download them?

2. Are you sure that the downloading was done in binary mode (not text)?

3. How did you burn them on CDs (files / ISO image / other)?

Start the installation and select 'Expert', strip-down everything
you don't use (XWindows, Emacs, and the like), keep the compiler and
compiler tools because you will have probabily to recompile your kernel.

A 'bare' installation should take less than 200Mb. Then add all the
tools/softwae you need for your specific job.

Each time cron found an error or another problem with the process is trying
to
execute, it send a mail to the root, the problem was: it tryied to send an
e-mail, it failed to send the e-mail (because mail is not sendmail), then
send
an e-mail to inform you that there is an error in sending the mail, it
failed
again, so send an e-mail to inform you...

Since mail is under /usr, the /usr partition can't be unmounted because is
used. And this lead to the big mess you had...

I strongly suggest you to remove that link and or sopport the annoyng
messages about the unability to send e-mail, or tinker with the cron-ed
scripts to remove the urge to e-mail.

and printers without Samba. The reason the Winx boxes can see each other is they,
by default use the same protocol.(netbuei sp? or netbios)

No not my drive, the company.
My drive is still going strong.
Here is what is going on.
============================================
When I started working from home, it was Windows only.
At that time I set myself up with an OnStream tape drive.
Critical partitions ( OS software ) I would back up onto
using disk image and then store on tape.
Other volatile software, I would back up onto into a specified
partition which I would then backup onto tape.

As I added more Linux ( started with CVS went on to other stuff ),
I had very few problems with backing up Linux stuff ( tar and gzip
partitions with data, didn't bother with OS and software since I
rarely needed to restore those ). I changed my backup partition
to a large partition on Linux and tar and gzip. Then backuped up
that partition via Samba ( it was a pain only being able to use my
OnStar on Windows ).

Now OnStream has declared Ch7. and I guess I want to update
my backup strategy. Can anyone suggest a few links that:
1) Suggest good hardware for backup ( ie tape drives that don't
cost $2000 but are reliable )?
2) Give a review of basic backup strategies for very small LANs
    ( 4 computers and a laptop )?

When I've done my copying:

1.) I've use 'dd' to create the image from the initial CD-ROM.
2.) Then, if you wanted, you could use xcdroast to verify the image.
3.) Then either xcdroast or cdrecord to burn your new CD.
4.) And finally xcdroast to verify the copy.

I've also found, if you're having burn difficulty, is to slow your burn
speed down. If you're only making a copy or two, what does it matter if
the burn take 6 minutes, 12 minutes or 18... or what-ever. Start the
burn, then go do something else. It won't take any longer, or any less
time if you're staring at the screen or what-ever. But if you're doing
something else, you spare yourself all the stress.

the time I restart I have to repeat steps1-7. It never goes to step8. I
did reserved an empty partition (6GB) on the hard drive which is dedicated

So???? Load the vfat module. Do nothing else. Do not pass go. Do not
take a lucky card. Do not eat jelly beans. Just load the module. If the
load attempt produces an error, well, hypothesis confirmed!

Subject: mem and swap problem
Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 14:27:07 -0600

Im running RH 7 on a PII 300 with 256 meg ram. The system is only
recognizing 64 meg and has already adjusted the swap accordingly.
I have already edited the lilo.conf with the " append="mem=256M". Ive run
the LILO and rebooted. The system is still only recognizing 64 meg.
Did I miss something in there and what was it. How can I adjust my swap to
match the 256m.

You weren't trying to illegally copy a specially protected game were
you? The simple technique used by xcdroast won't work for some of these,
especially recent ones.

Hello,

Check your httpd.conf for some of these entries:

SSLCertificateFile
SSLCertificateKeyFile
SSLCACertificatePath
SSLCACertificateFile
SSLCARevocationPath
SSLCARevocationFile

Basiscly you just need to exchange the filenames for your SSL
aware server, but depeending on the formats of your keys the configuration
may be different. You may need to check some docs:

http://www.apacheref.com/ref/mod_ssl.html

http://www.openssl.org/
http://www.mod_ssl.org/

Good luck

Yes, well people have been ignoring the authors exhortations on that
for ages. If he thinks that newer is better, that's his business, but
they aren't his disks.

shrug. The point about cfdisk is that it's a fdisk for lusers. It
shoudl be obvious. Let's see .... urghhh. Horrible menuish interface.
Ecch. Typing "h" brings up help.

n Create new partition from free space

well, fine, but when I type "n" it says "this partition is already on
use".

Throw it back. If he thinks that's an improvement, he's a dutchman.

Why bother thinking about it? Use fdisk.
