Hi all,
I am running APACHE webserver on SUSE Linux 7.1 and
I am using some CGI/Perl programs doing
..........
open(FH,"> write_me.txt");
print FH "Hello, world! \n";
.......
However, whenever I run the program no file is written! In the htttpd

"Can not open file for writing".
Does anynore know what do I have to do in order to get that thing running?
Has this problem something to do with permissions?
Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

as per the redhat list, this is caused by a previous helix install.
check your /usr/lib/libzvt.so.2, what it points at. after my helix
install some time ago, i had the 2.2.10 shared lib sitting around, the
symlink wasn't getting upgraded even with the forced rpm reinstall of
latest gnome-libs.
i killed the symlink, reinstalled the libs rpm, and the gnome-terminal
worked again. you can just readjust the link manually instead...

I would check out the sane project for scanning and ensure that your scanner
is supported. I don't know much about USB devices so you may also want to
visit the USB Linux webpages. They have a pretty good selection on what is
supported, etc. Burning CD's is actually pretty easy; but it can be a bit
of a kludge using a ide cd burner. One has to make a few changes to how
linux "sees" the device and allow it to be seen by something called the
ide-scsi emulation layer which is managed by a kernel module. See the cd rw
howto for more details. I think there are a few options for viewing dvds.
One that I have firsthand experience with is intervideo and its lindvd
product. We worked a bit with a rather large OEM client to get dvd support
on its linux preloaded laptops. As far as the specific device goes and
whether its supported, I don't know the specifics.
All of the questions or requirements you have posted probably require some
secondary reading of howto's at some level or another. I use a ide based cd
rw with several pieces of software. I don't use redhat at all though. For
me, I apt-get one piece of software and it gets the dependencies for me as
well. I use Xcdroast to burn cd's. Sometimes I use gcombust or gtoast.
Other times I use the command line tool. Xcdroast is probably the most
heard about application.

I've set up a dual-boot box for my dad that works nicely with one
strange exception: whenever he reboots from Linux into Windows 98SE
without completely powering down the computer, Windows boots and then
completely hangs. If he shuts down the box from Linux and then boots
into Windows, everything works nicely. I have no idea what could be
causing this, but I know if there's a solution, someone here will know
what it is.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Checkout the SANE package. You'll probably have better results using a 2.4.x
kernel with better USB support. I have this working with a SCSI Mustek.
> 2.) Acquiring images via USB connection from my Toshiba digital camera
> 3.) Burning CDs using my IDE CD-RW
You'll need to setup ide-scsi. Not very difficult with the howto. I have this
running with xcdroast and everything works fine. The main sticking point was
that I had a SCSI and IDE CD. WHen I installed the ide-scsi modules I had some
weird errors onthe SCSI CD.
> 4.) Playing DVD movies (Creative Labs Encore 6x)
This also works fine on a machine running 2.4.3 kernel and xine. On a K62/500
it was jerky and not really watchable. Using an AMD Athlon 850 was fine. There's
a howto on linux.com to do this.

Early quicktime works. Later quicktimes don't. The cutoff was probably around
QT3 or so... AIFF, mp3, wav and other formats can play through xmms with the
appropriate plugin.

2.2 kernels had a 2GB filesize limit. You seem to be running into this error.

Take a look to see if the windoz partition is bootable using fdisk.
fdisk /dev/hda
Then press "p" & [enter] # to view the partition table.
Then check to see if there is an asterisk under "Boot" in the line for
the windoz partition. If not then you need to make the partition
bootable.

The problem is that Linux uses different setting for your computer
hardware. Settings are not the same as in Bios. Therefore it happen, but
sometimes it s only one solution. But you can try to set all hardware like
it is set in Windows . Write down addreses, IRQ etc. and try to apply them
in Linux. Maybe it will work.
But I do not think it is worth to do if everything is working Okay. If you
are to lazy to wait some seconds more to shutdown computer, meybe it is
worth to do thi job.

The kernel list is receiving notices that RH 7.* has forgotten to compile
several things with LARGEFILE64 (or wahtever it is), essentially
because they have pre-forgotten to declare it somewhere in their
standard headers.

I think you're talking about what's known as a "tmpfs", which is used

Are you implying that you HAVE space left on the disk? I think we

Many people who like Linux and do not like Microsoft do not know that they
support Microsoft by buing product from companies who cooperate with them.
For example if you want do something for LInux buy IBM computers but do not
T....s etc.... (the list is long)
Buy other hardware from companies which do something in Linux direction.
Tell about it to your friends etc..
Take a look around and see how many shops sell computers with preinstaled
Linux ( very little). Ask them is it possible to buy the computer with
Linux. Do everything what your soul is telling you, like I listen to paly
