You should install the new kernel to a floppy and have your
pc configure to boot the floopy first. If there is a problem
you can just remove the floppy and reboot the machine.

Hello, I have been using RedHat 7 for about 2 weeks now and my default
directory when downloading from Netscape or bringing up a terminal window
HAD been my home directory and is now /usr/bin. How do I get it back to
my home directory?
Thanks,

Subject: Used Ximian Update, now cannot login at all
Date: 26 Mar 2001 08:40:57 -0800
I am using SuSE 7.1, and prefer gnome to KDE (sorry KDE fans). The version
of gnome shipped with SuSE 7.1 is a little older than the latest from Ximian
and, even worse, does not have sound enabled. So, following the advice of
others here on USENET, I tricked the Ximian installer into believing I had
SuSE 7.0 installed, and let the installer do its thing. But I went a little
further, as I like the Gnome Login Manager, as well. I allowed the installer
to replace the KDE login manager with gnome as the default. Now, when I reach
the login manager, it does not accept keyboard input. I can use the mouse to
choose various menu items, but I cannot login without the keyboard input. I
have tried CNTRL-ALT-F1, CNTRL-ALT-BKSPC, but nothing I have tried works.
I know that I brought this on myself, and that Ximian does not yet support
SuSE 7.1. However, I would be thankful for any help or pointers you might
have.
Thanks for your help,
Rusty

Seems my situation is more worth,
no matter I use command "e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hdb2" or
"e2fsck -b 16385 /dev/hdb2" or
"e2fsck -b 24577 /dev/hdb2"
It got this message
e2fsck 1.14, 9-Jan-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdb2
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
So, I don't know what' happen on my system -- no super block backup?
Or anything else instead of corrupt supperblock!

Mandrake 7.2, using RP8, downloaded using link at Real... This was
the RPM that was there - requires the --ignorearch flag for RPM, but
otherwise installs clean, works well...

That would be the default desktop
the user's .wm_style overides that

I would agree here but don't underestimate the value of a seperate /home.
All my machines except my laptop have seperate /, /boot, /usr, /opt, swap,
/home, /var partitions. My laptop has /, /boot, /home. If I have to
reinstall for some reason I will keep all my personal files and setups
if I leave /home untouched. As a new user he will probably reinstall
a few times and a seperate /home will save much time.

When I first installed Debian on my laptop, I did so with my modem and
ethernet cards unplugged, thinking it would make for a *less
complicated* installation. HA. I thought I could just edit config files
later to get everything running. But the Debian Doc Project docs are
mostly blank sections with "do this later" penciled in and the Linux
Doc Project docs mostly refer to Red Hat and the directions don't dync
with the locations of Debian configuration files. I gave up trying to
get my networking working by reading the HOWTOS, the Rute Tutorial and
various other Linux docs and just reinstalled with everything plugged
in.
The networking now works, (Yay!), but now after booting up, every 5
minutes I get a screenfull of text breaking in on whatever I'm doing as
root.
The text says "Usage /sbin/getty [" and then the help text you would
get by issing the "/sbin/getty/ command with no arguments. But I get
this multiple times, then an error line that says
INIT Id "S" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
So something is wrong with getty, and it has to do with Init. I've read
the manpages for init, and related manpages and for getty and related
manpages. And I'm stumped. Where do I look and what do I change to fix
this respawing problem?
I'm really not in the mood to reinstall the system *again* to tyr to
fix a problem.
Also, is there no place to look for detailed instructions on setting up
Debian by hand if you had to? The installation program is all very
fine, but I don't know what it's doing or why; the configure modules
segment promises a page of description on each module so you can decide
whether to install it, but doesn't deliver. You have to *guess* what
something does and whether you need it.

Come on. If you don't know what the product is, don't reply - just like you
wouldn't have if the OP had asked about a compiler for a language you'd
never heard of.
FWIW, Crystal Reports is a GUI report designer/generator for use with
databases that can be used as a scriptable COM object. There's no GUI
equivalent for Linux (well, none I'm aware of, and none on rpmfind.net).
However, there's a lot of perl code, at least, that you could adapt to write
reports in HTML format.

Just wondering if the best thing to do (with loadlin), would be to copy

Tex/LaTex have a standard 'filter' that can translate Tex document into
PDF (dvi2pdf). I don't know how advanced is however... see in the
standard tex package.

I'll throw my recommendation for Applix in as well. My only complaint is that
it doesn't convert MS formats well, but that's mainly the fault of MS changing
their formats so often ( Word 95, 98 and 2000 formats are totally different...).
But then, I have version 4.4.2: maybe there are patches or upgrades?
But it runs on my P90 with 48MB, so I like it...
If you don't need MS conversion, I like Abi-word for a WP, and the KDE suite
KOffice is pretty good. The main problems with KDE is that you pretty much have
to install the whole desktop, and the installation is...well, lets say it's "not
ready for primetime".

This happened to me also! (I run SuSE 7.0). I

ALSO: I recommend a commercial package: Drive

lots of extra space, you can boot via a floppy
Caldera/DOS (comes with Drive Image) and save any

Subject: Netmax and Port Forwarding
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 18:55:49 GMT
Hi-
I'm a relative Linux Newbie, but have a strong tech background, and I
purchased Netmax Internet Server a few months back to help set up a home
file/web server. I really didn't want to pay for open source, but I thought
what the hell, it'll be everything I need and it's got a nice GUI, right?
Now, I am noticing Netmax has severe limitations. My problem? I want to
open TWO ports, 8000, 8001 so I can run a Shoutcast server from my internal
network. I run the Shoutcast server on a W2K box with internal IP
192.168.1.3. I also have the Netmax Firewall Retail version which THEIR
tech support advised me to buy. Well, their retail firewall doesn't allow
traffic rerouting, and I WILL NOT pay another $100 for a license just to get
this feature. They also only provide support on a per-issue basis for $150
an issue. WHAT A RIPOFF! I figure there must be a way to modify my
IPCHAINS to allow the open ports and forwarding to the W2K box from the
command line. I would truly appreciate any help. I have read the HOWTO's
and scoured through books, but nothing I try seems to work. The funny thing
is, this used to work when I had a Linksys router, but now I get nada.
A little more about my configuration:
I have a two NIC card setup. NIC1 (eth0) runs my internal network and is
not NAT'd. NIC2 (eth1) is my external NIC and NATs incoming traffic. I
would like to forward incoming traffic on "externalIP":8000 to
192.168.1.3:8000, and do the same for port 8001. How can I tell if port
8000 is open? Anybody know of a Netmax support site that has no affiliation
with Netmax?
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks in Advance,
Matt

It's rather obvious that glib-config isn't in root's path (it's
