Some command that starts kde. "startkde" is a usual candidate.

Why don't you have blue socks on? There's no particular reason. Perhaps
that person prefers chosing from a menu rather than specifying
directly. Perhaps (rightly!) they don't run X as root (you SHOULDN'T!).

The weird thing is that I had it working on my previously Linux install
(same version off the same CD) - I formatted and reinstalled, and now I've
got problems. Probably forget some package in the reinstallation...?

Better in what way? Sun's cc produces better code, gcc compiles
it's own flavour of C. Take your pick!
Haven't Intel just released a new compiler for Linux?
Borland certainly have, too (but it may be part of Kylix?).

look in /etc/X11/
there is a directory called xinit or something.
there are two files in there.
One of them says has entries like "startkde" and "gnome-session" .
Read through it.
On my redhat install, the file says , briefly,
if I have specified a desktop , try to start it.
if specified desktop not found, or there is no specified desktop, try to
start gnome ( gnome-session)
If that fails, try to start kde ( startkde )
if that fails, just start 3 consoles and the clock app .
On your home computer, once you have a cosole running, type in startkde or
gnome-session. this should start the desktop. Note that closing the
terminal that you typed into will kill the desktop as well :)

Linux has a clock, separate from the bios clock .
hence you have a "hardware clock" , which is the bios clock and the kernel
clock which is the system clock. Clear as mud yet ? :)
To control the hardware clock ( changing it ) you use a program called
hwclock.
to control the system ( linux ) clock , you use the program date.
typing man on these two will give you the necessary info.
What I usually do:
use hwclock to set the bios time. then sync the system time with the bios
time
# set the hardware clock.
hwclock --set --date=19:30:00
# move hardware clock's value to the system clock
hwclock --hctosys
That should take care of it.
later.

Well I couldn't do it because gnome was so hosed I could not get a terminal window
(righ-click did not work at all).
Uninstalling Mozilla didn't work... for some reason it never registered itself so it
was not showing in "rpm -qa".
So what I did was I created a new account and instead of logging in as root I logged
in as that user. Once I logged in, to my surprise gnome was working just fine! I
logged out and logged back in as root, and even though the panel still wasn't there,
I was able to right-click, open a terminal window and type "panel". That restored
the panel, with all my customizations.
I'm curious though what happened :)
Thanx to all who replied,
Stan

Another vote for Slackware. I try others from time to time, and always
end up going back. If you want bells and whistles it may not be for
you though.
Beware. I'm using slack7.1 with the 2.2.16 kernel. I downloaded source
for kernel 2.4.4 and built it and mysterious problems crop up, mostly
to do with inserting modules. I've tried tinkering with modules.conf
but just today I ended up doing a clean install of 7.1.
I look forward to getting 7.2 which hopefully will include a configuration
for 2.4 kernels that has the problems ironed out.

In my case (RH6.2 o.k.,
RH7.1 error message >Cannot open device /dev/mouse Device or resource busy)
it was the mouse and an older ISA network card (Netgear EA201) both
attempting to use IRQ12.
Suggestions:
(1) Check out the files /proc/i* to see what IRQs/interrupts the system
knows about.
If there is a card in your PC that the system doesn't know about, you've
close to
isolating the source of the problem.
(2) Pull out all the older cards in your PC and get the mouse to work: then
put the
cards back in, one at a time.

You need new modutils (binutils, fileutils, etc. ..) to build
and run 2.4 kernels, as the Changes file says!

There are no problems. This is like claiming that getting unleaded
petrol for your new car is a problem that needs "ironing out", because
you didn't need to for your old car.

I'm not overly familiar with the networking side of unix or linux, so I was
wondering as follows
Is there a way to manually open a TCP/IP connection and send (almost) all
the communications manually. As in logging in to an FTP server and entering
all commands yourself rather than using a client to parse them for you.
After all, that's how it was originally done isn't it?
Thanks
