IMHO (please don't bother arguing with me, I am not trying to
make a case, just present a point of view.)
I read through this thread, and thought about it for a while.
What I came up with was this:
Remember when you were a child and you asked a question about
a complicated subject like "trial law"? When a youngster watches
a court case in a movie or on TV, (and they have an inquisitive
mind), a lot of things don't make sense. You ask your parents
about something and they try to explain situations that could
arise if you allowed the "common sense" thing to happen that would
result in injustice. But to the youngster it sounds like they are
making up very far fetched weird excuses for avoiding the obvious.
The young person is viewing a complicated issue from one perspective
without taking into account how many other perspectives there are.
The inevitable answer that arises is "You'll understand when you are
older."
This is my take on the "Mac/Windows/Dos" user trying to make their
way into UNIX. They say "My gosh that is very complicated".
And then I have to say:
"well you have to think about a "multiuser" system where
dozens of people may all be logged in
at once and this * is how they work with that
...."
"you have to think about security and how different users
may or may not want certain other users
to work with some of their files so there
is a reason that * is the way it is...."
"you have to think about "multiprocessing" and the fact
that there are many different things going
on all the time and they have to have ways
of negotiating who uses what when, this
results in the need for a * ...."
"you have to understand that there is the possibility of
having many network interfaces and networks
and routing becomes and issue, not to mention
other I/O devices, that's why they seperated
the commands and their features into these
layers..."
"you have to comprehend multiplexing of x <-> x items through
this layer of the OSI model? you see the
reason right? <huh? the 95/Mac user says!>"
The "single-user" mentality is a perspective, and until a person
gains experience working with a "multi-user", "multi-tasking"
community the necessity for the complexity of fulfilling what may seem
like a simple request for one user is incomprehensible. Not to say that
there is any reason for them to ever get that experience.
For a single-user workstation with *NO* public services, I think that a
windows/mac like environment would be great if it were more stable and
powerfull (i.e. had a real shell and Command Line utilities). But let's
face it 95 is instable and complex in it's own way. The difference
is that many (not all) of 95's complexities have no underlying
necessity, there are many area's that were never thought out.
It is like a group of programmers who had never operated systems
over a full life-cycle designed it.
(but I would love to see all the people who like windows try Mac's)
(although I think that Macintosh should make their hardware and
API's open spec.)
############
This is what I think differentiates this argument from the one given
to children. A child has to grow up and live in the world with the
rest of society.
A computer user doesn't need to
(and there is no reason for them to!).
#############
Aside from the fact that I am a UNIX SA, and so am very familiar with
UNIX, I would have to say that why it appeals to me for a workstation
is it's geekiness. I like the complexity and the puzzles.
Just like some people like their 68 mustang more than their
96 BMW.

While using KDE 1.0 (SuSE 5.3), I notice that the HD is regularly
accessed every 2 or 3 seconds. I found out that every time an error
message is being written into the file $HOME/.X.err which goes like
this:
kwm: X_CopyArea(0x2c0083f): BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window
parameter)
update
Couldn't open status file /var/lock/STATUS..LCK

The writing process seems to be the command tee, started by the bash
shell. But I have no clue about how stopping this, and I have to pay
attention not to forget to delete this file every couple of days,
because it gets growing and growing!
If you do not know what is causing this error message, perhaps you

I need to move my linux from hda to another, larger disk (hdc) and free
hda completely from linux (except for /boot, which remains on hda).
I have moved the various partions already (create a partition on hdc,
make a temporary directory, copy everything to the new partion, rename
the old and then the rename the new to the old system, modify fstab and
reboot). So far, no problem, this is done.
But I don't know how to do the root filesystem. The scheme above does
certainly not work (I guess), but how to go about it?

Man this sounds like an old machine. I used to have a few of them
running Linux, and it was a pain in the but to set them up.
First of all you will need to go to the Compaq web site and download
the EISA utility diskette images.
You use these to set "ISA mode" on all your slots. And remove the
reservation of the IRQ's DMA's and I/O addresses for the EISA stuff.
(unless you want to use EISA cards in EISA modes)
Then you don't have to worry about that stuff.
Next you will only be able to use 16MB of RAM until you get the
machine up and running, then try using "append= "mem=XXM"" (where
XX is the amount of MB of RAM)
in your lilo.conf. If that doesn't fix the problem then
you will have to recompile the kernel with the "limit memory to 16MB"
option. (this does the oposite of what it sounds like...)
I don't know if there are drivers for any of the Compaq cards?
Maybe, now there are. There definitely weren't when I was using
those Compaq servers. If you have common replacement cards I
bet it would be easier to use them.

Help!
I want to get a tape backup system for my win98/Linux system
and have settled on what is called a 'Ditto' drive which can do
up to 7.5GB per tape.
This device works through the parellel port.
Does anybody know if linux supports this? I have RH5.0.
Alternatively, please advise which PC based backup systems
are available that will be supported by both win98 and Linux.
Thanx,

RedHat 5.2 comes with Fvwm2/95, Window Maker, LessTiff. Also you may add
Gnome fo Fvwm95 , it's a quite cool desktop applications architecture
(should work with any Window manager) but it's still rather buggy and
unreliable, despite some apps work quite well already. More for
experimentation than true daylife.
I know SuSE comes with KDE, but you might install it on a RedHat later
without any problem. I've not seen KDE on RedHat 5.2 but I don't have an
official one, I've an Infomagic 6CD box which features both RedHat and SuSE.
Installation process for SuSE is very nice for a text mode. Both RedHat and
SuSE are really easy to install. I found X11 was a little more work to
install with SuSE but nothing you could not overcome.
Beware that once you choose your installation, it's better to stick with it
because most installations have their own places for some important
configuration files. Like : on redHat, /usr/local is not used at all for any
application. Most of the config files are directly in /etc, even for some
non-kernel apps. This is a choice you'll have to accept : most of the times,
docs and FAQs and HOW-TOs tell you a file is somewhere, and on RedHat it's
elsewhere. You may change all these places with Linuxconf, but then you're
not compliant with RPM packages updates when you patch your installation.
Unless you really want to reinstall each new version of RedHat, it's better
to stick with their file tree.
I have tried SuSE and I have much respect for it but I'm used to redHat
since version 3.0.3 now and I don't fell learning the places for major
configuration files again.

Are you sure you don't mean regcomp()? This is for compiling regular

mmmm.... I dual boot Win95 and SuSE 5.3 (WinX is history when I receive
my SuSE 6.0 subscription!) and find my Linux side consideably faster
than my Win95 side. Add to that the fact that since I have installed
Linux back in May of last year none of my Linux distros have crashed and
you know why I spend 99.5% of my time in SuSE. In fact, since Christmas
I have been on the Win95 side only once, to check on my addition of a
6.4GB hd to my system.
Are you dual booting on the same machine or are you comparing apples and
oranges?
Possible reasons why your Linux setup may be slower:
You have the swap space on the same disk as your root partition, which
leads to a lot of head switching when running a memory hog like
Netscape, or when you have lots of applications open at the same time.
Your swap file is smaller in size than twice the amount of RAM on your
system.
You have unecessary services running, taking up memory, if not clock
cycles. Go through your list of deamons that boot at startup and see if
you are really using them. You are not using your machine as a host on
the Internet? Why run the http deamon? etc.... Don't use RAID
mirroring? Why have that stuff running? Arn't using the PostgrSQL
database but still loading it's server deamon? Etc...., give inetd less
to watch over.
Some of your apps are not optimized.
Disk space is nearly full.
You expect Linux to be faster and Win95 to be slower and you have
exaggerated how big that gap should be. Some versions of Linux apps are
slower than their counterpart M$ versions and visa-versa. In my Win95
days I ran Word 6.0. When I "upgraded" to NT 3.51 I asked for and
received a free copy of Word 6.0 for NT. What a dog. You got
ssslllooowww disk activity every time you clicked a menu option! And NT
wasn't much more stable than Win95 to make it worth all the login
hassels, service settings (and fixings) and hardware restrictions,
etc... Goodbye NT.
There's more but I'm a relative newbie to Linux. Maybe some of the big
boys and girls will throw in a few more tips.

The most recent version of the Linux floppy tape driver (ftape)
supports this. See
http://www-math.math.rwth-aachen.de/~LBFM/claus/ftape/ for more
information.
In all conscience, though, I can't recommend the Ditto Max as a
reliable backup device. I have an internal drive which seems to get
occasionally confused, and it can only get unconfused by being
power-cycled. I seem to have also lost my entire last cycle of backup
tapes, and if the format on a tape gets damaged it can't be easily
repaired. Yay proprietary formats and cheap hardware. *sigh*

At some SCSI cards I know there are problems installing on the last SCSI ids. However
your workaround is nearly complete. However before rebooring from SCSI id 14 you have
to change lilo.conf so it
points to /dev/sde instead of /dev/sdb. And the same with references in /etc/mtab and
/etc/fstab
success!
