It is far less work to simply install it, and read the man page (or
just run it!).

Is that surprising? If I try and take money out of my bank account, I
get an error message too! Both of us have to put something in before we

Actually I had a Slackware Linux 1.0 Cd that I evidently recently got rid
of. It never supported my SCSI cd so never was installed. I dated myself
but I agree with you entirely.
Linux the open system (as in free) is poised to replace Windows, if the
Linux development community can improve on the simplicity of installation,
improve the user interfaces, support Win based documents natively, and port
killer PC games on the average pc (i.e., 586, 64mb, 2.6mg). Otherwise it
might slide into the background with OS/2, Unix and Solarius and that would
be a real shame.

Sorry NG,
I was away and now you're away, but I hope this will help. Without
X-windows you're missing all the fun. The X-problem is generic although
I'm still not sure of the exact nature of the problem.
As root you should run Xconfigurator or XF86Setup. This will use the
driver for your video card. The setup should then ask you to select your
monitor. Select Generic Monitor. It should test your setup and select the
best for display for your configuration. My monitor is an AcerView 76e but
it works best with the Generic Multisync driver.
If you have trouble running XConfigurator or XF86Setup then you'll need to
reinstall your XFree86 rpms. CD to your installation CD and use rpm -Fvh
X*
Oh and post your status.

Subject: Please help me get WIN98 back!!
Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 15:22:12 -0400
During this Memorial weekend, I installed Redhat 7.1 (Kernel 2.4.2-2)
on my PC at home. Win98 is on IDE drive/A and Rh7.1 completely on IDE
drive/B. I did not realize at the time that part of linux, such as /boot
partition, had to be on drive/A to use LILO.
During graphic installation,I was prompted where to put LILO i.e. in MBR
or linux drive's boot partition. Unfortunately I decided to avoid fooling
with MBR and opted for the later.
The lilo installation ended up with failure. Everything else went fine.
I created boot diskette. I then realized I was no longer able to boot
Win98. Everybody in my household jumped on me!! My wife wanted to search
webs about her stock investment, my kid wanted to play starcraft with his
folks, ....
I hoped to restore MBR by executing 'fdisk /MBR' under MSDOS but I was
surprised to learn that all my Windows rescue and MSDOS diskettes failed
to even boot. PC tried to boot from the floppies but hang after reading/
loading a few blocks.
When I mounted on to /dev/hda1, I could see that all Win98 directories
and files were still intact. I just do not know why drive/A broke when I
tried my best < which was obviously not good enough :-( > not to disturb
its MBR.
I would appreciate any advice that can pull me out of this mess.
1) What corruptions on drive/A and how to restore it??
2) I configured lilo to boot either linux and win98 but the later never
came up - it hang just like when I booted off diskettes. Could you
offer me a copy of /etc/lilo.conf to compare. My copy is at home.
3) I configured printer OK but not my sound card (Turtle Beach Montogo II
and Altec Lansing 495). sndconfig autoprobe concluded it was Altec
ADA305 and mentioned it is not supported by Linux yet. I tried without
probe but there were only 2 Turtle Beach choices and my Montego II was
not ont the list. I tried both and they all ended up in errors.
Does it mean I'm out of luck as far as sound card is concerned?
4) Does Linux support HP 6200C scanner?? If affirmative, how?
5) I have MSN connection which I usually use their 'MSN Internet Access'
tool to connect. Could and how I connect to MSN from Linux??
Please asnwer to my e-mail address. Thanks for kind assistance.

Ctrl Alt + seems to "zoom" in but it doesn't (as far as I can tell) change
the resolution so I can get more objects (icons etc) on the screen.
Any other ideas?

It's what it says. ZMAGIC? I don't think I've seen that in a long
while. It's a particular kind of executable (starts with 0314, which
appears to be "space" "new line", so maybe it's a script!). What does
ls -l /usr/tictac/tictac
say? I want to know if it is excutable.
Would you also try:
head -12c < /usr/tictac/tictac | od -a
thanks.

An offline calandar is useless, surely? It's not up to date.
And I have no trouble doing this .. file sharing has been here forever.
If you want to share a file that represents a calandar, fine
(put it on coda if you want offline access, but I honestly don't
see the point).

During the install did it not ask you to create a root account AND a user
account? What name did you give the user account, you should be logging
in as that username. Then, use sudo (or su command) to do root-type stuff.
Otherwise, use the admin tools to create a user account. See if you have
linuxconf or some tool that lets you "adduser"

You are going about it all wrong. Goto
http://quakeforge.sourceforge.net and download there source. As for
extracting the files from the cdrom, install lha. Since you run
debian do a "apt-get install lha", then cd to your quake driectory
and do a "lha e /cdrom/resource.1" that will extract all of the quake
files from the cdrom. Then just compile the source from quakeforge
and copy the binaries to your quake directory. Quakeforge comes with
the binaries to play quake on svga glx or x11.

It is partly up to date.

Good for you. Not terribly relevant though. The question is whether or
not the feature set of MS Exchange can be matched by opensource
software, not whether or not you can conduct your life without
groupware.
>file sharing has been here forever.
So it has, and presumably when it was introduced, there were people
who couldn't see the point, because after all, what were floppies for?
(btw: do you think we should abandon email protocols like smtp and
imap? perhaps we should go back to the days when email folders were
only accessed using file sharing protocols?).
