it isnt authoritative.  if you want authoritative, you should go to the actual 
POSIX spec:
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/V3_chap02.html

using $(...) in favor of `...` in general as a "good programming practice" is 
one thing, claiming the spec deprecates it is completely different ...

mixing unrelated changes doesnt jive with me which is why i pointed it out.  
but i'm not the maintainer who accepts/rejects the patch, so maybe Jon doesnt 
care.
