You might try to remove -DMODVERSIONS from Makefile in n-net
subdirectory and rebuild dosnet.o (first remove dosnet.o to make sure
it is recompiled).

Subject: dosemu 0.98.6 barely works...
Hi,
I recently downloaded dosemu 0.98.6 to install on my 2.2.5 box (recently
Slackware 3.1 distribution, but now heavily altered).
I can start dosemu, but have several problems thereafter.
1) I cannot start with graphics enabled - if console graphics are enabled,
the screen goes black and the keyboard dies - can't switch vt, have to hit
reset (ouch). If console graphics not enabled, but plainvga with port access
is, the screen gets vertical lines in different colors (looks like a test of
the emergency broadcaast system :-), keyboard locks, have to hit reset.
2) I cannot run any sort of program that requires DPMI, no matter what the
memory settings in my /etc/dosemu.conf are. The program invariably (i.e.
easily reproducible :-) crashes back to the linux prompt, when it doesn't
hang. (fortunately, in this case it doesn't take the keyboard with it - I can
switch terminals and kill the dos process)
3) I cannot run some programs that require access to (presumably) slightly
deeper portions of the system - these don't hang, just produce odd results.
(for instance, PKUNZIP 2.04g will run fine...as long as the file one is
unzipping does not span floppy disks - then, it reads the table off the final
disk, and proceeds to give me error messages saying that it can't find the
actual files in the Zip file - without asking me to switch disks back to the
first disk)
4) Don't have sound. This doesn't surprise me, though, as I can't get my
sound card to work under Linux either (grin).
If you reply, please CC it to me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED], as I
subscribe to the linux-msdos-digest, which only appears about once every 1.5
weeks in my mailbox (unlike the linux-kernel digest, which appears
approximately 3 times a day - if it's not too little, it's too much :-).
Thanks in advance for any information or help provided.

Subject: setting dosemu font
I have a 40x25 text-mode game. It runs nicely under xdos from dosemu
0.98.1.0, using the Debian package that comes with Slink aka Debian
2.1, plus Caldera DR DOS.
I'd like to get it to use a more realistic font, like the original CGA
font. After futzing for a while trying to pass in the font option on
the command line (which, of course, I couldn't) I eventually decided to
edit /etc/dosemu/conf. (Debian has /etc/dosemu/conf and
/etc/dosemu/users.)
I modified this section:
$_X_keycode = (off) # on == translate keybord via dosemu keytables
$_X_blinkrate = (8) # blink rate for the cursor
$_X_font = "" # basename from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/*
# (without extension) e.g. "vga"
$_X_mitshm = (on) # Use shared memory extensions
$_X_sharecmap = (off) # share the colormap with other applications
by inserting the letters 'cga' in betwen the quotation marks on the
$_X_font line.
I get this error:
Running on CPU=486, FPU=1, rdtsc=0
In file included from /usr/lib/dosemu/global.conf:285
Error in : (line 285) parse error
1 error(s) detected while parsing the configuration-file
'xterm -fn cga' works fine, and gives me an xterm with a real CGA font.
I get the same error if I insert the three letters 'vga' in between the
quotation marks. The only way I can get dosemu to run is to leave that
thing blank.
I can, of course, modify my X server setup so that the font 'vga'
actually gives the 'cga' font. This is what I'm currently doing.
IMHO, the poor error message is a bug. Maybe the parse error is a bug
too. If not, can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Subject: [0.98.6.0] Problem with graphics on a laptop
Hello
I have a laptop with a Chip & Techn. 655xx chipset. I can use dosemu
without problems if I set $_graphics to 0. However if I enable graphics the
screen doesn't show garbage, but it's messed up: the font is bigger (maybe
the resulution is simply lower), between the upper and bottom half is
roughly one line missing. If a graphical application (an old DOS game) is
started on the left side is addionally a black area. So I assume the initial
graphicsmode is set in some way wrong.
I don't known anything about VGA-modes so I can't interpret the debug
output. The problem doesn't occur if dosemu start without booting (-N). And
its the same for "","plainvga" and "trident" as chipset.
I assume my chipset is not supported. If so is there any development under
the way?

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Hi,
I found some inconveniences during working with dosemu and I made some
corrections:
dosemu-0.98.1.dirmask.patch.gz:
When we work in a group, we use common directories and these directories
must be group-writeable. In dosemu the mask of mkdir is 0755 instead of
0777, so the created directories has only read group-permission.
This patch changes the mask to 0777. (umask will be applied on it when the
directory is created.)
dosemu-0.98.1.share.patch.gz:
In Linux, read lock cannot be put onto a write-only opened file. (I came
up against from this problem.)
This patch changes the lock type to F_WRLOCK if the file is opened for
write-only.
dosemu-0.98.1.latin_to_dos.patch.gz:
I had some problems with typing accentuated letters (especially hungarian
letters) and I made a patch for latin_to_dos mapping.
This patch makes many accentuated letters available from keyboard.
The most changes are make by changing 0 to a valuable code, so the patch
shouldn't take effect on the original conversion.
I tested these patches on Debian 2.0, kernel 2.0.34, libc6.

Why is it a bug to report a parse error ?
ALWAYS check the LATEST version before reporting "Bugs". This was fixed in
0.98.3

Not difficult - Its just a matter of reading the DOCUMENTAION about the
'DOSEMU debugger'. You will notice that it supports full access to both

Well, you could just install Win/OS 2, which would do it all for you.
Alternatively, if you HAVE the relevant licenses then just look for the
file named in the DOCUMENTATION. There are plent of search systems on the
WWW that will help you find files tucked into obscure locations.

Because it is for people interested in running "ms"-dos applications under
linux. I woiuld suggest that many people DO use their actual installation
of DOS, rather than DOS/C
> need to develop freedos when Caldera offers DR-DOS for dosemu for free?
Who knows - maybe you should ask that on the FREEDOS mailing list - not
this one.
Of course, you could also get your facts CORRECT. Caldera DO NOT offer
DR-DOS for free - PERIOD. You can download a version and TRY IT for 90
days. AFTER this you are REQUIRED to purchase a copy if you plan to
continue using it. The cost is 29USD.[1]

Well, now you know ... 8-)

[1] We used to have contact with some people at Caldera, and even hoped
that they WOULD make DR-DOS free, as they originally claimed to be doing.
However, the current license is NOT free.

Because the error message doesn't tell what file and what line the
error is at. If I hadn't just changed that line, and no other line, I
would have had to resort to cut-and-try binary search to find the
change that caused the error message.

The font thing, or the error-message thing?
My apologies. I will upgrade. (Is there a Debian package for 0.98.3
yet? I'll go look.)

Just a note on that. Caldera -does- offer DR-DOS free for dosemu via a
link on their website, but it's not supported at all, and you can't
redistribute it, and you can only run it on Dosemu.

Yes; I downloaded it on these terms on 1999-04-01. The link has since
disappeared from the web site, which might explain Alistair's
confusion, although not his rancor.

well, you're wrong. If you'd double check YOUR facts then you would
notice that on Caldera's website they offer a DR-DOS hdimage for FREE.

not really, people use dosemu to run their DOS applications wheather they
are MS, PC, or DR DOS. Therefore linux-dos would have seemed more
meaningful.

Is the source of DR-DOS available ? If not, that's an excellent reason
to develop Freedos.
And even if it is, it's generally nice to have a choice, IMO. Not a
particularly compelling reason, but probably good enough.

According to the README, dosemu also runs under NetBSD. Also I think
I remember people trying to port it to FreeBSD a few years ago.
Does anyone know how well it works under NetBSD or FreeBSD, e.g. does
lredir work and can you run dosemu on the console or only under X,
does it always need to run as root etc. ? Does the latest version
work under NetBSD, or only some older versions and if so, which ones ?
(I notice that it says in the README (but don't know whether it is
still TRUE) that the graphics emulation is expected not to work
under NetBSD - that would rule out most DOS applications.)

Floppy bug in 0.98.6 and 0.99.10 - keyboard die
Dear,
I tested new releases of your dosemu. It is nice, that it became
really working.
I have 2 floppies in 0.98.2 both worked fine.
Then I tested 0.98.6 and 0.99.10. After I do
"dir B:\" or "dir A:\"
then everything in listing is correct, but my dos keyboard do not work
from this point.
(If I have dos -k switch then I have to reset). The bug seems to be
same.
Do you have an idea how to fix it.
2, You reported, that DOSEMU do not work with quattro pro v 2.0.
I tested it, and quatro makes some strange video tests. I obtain
messages
lige "divide by zero in clib". How can I help you in this field?

Hi!
I'm setting up a BBS running PCBoard under dosemu on a Linux box.
I am trying to make the system as reliable and secure as possible,
so I've tried to set it up so that dosemu is run non-suid-root as
a regular user. However, the tty locking code in ser_init.c, which
is derived from Taylor UUCP, requires dosemu to be run suid root.
As you probably can tell, using serial ports is essential for a
BBS to function. As far as I can tell, there is no way to disable
the lockfile creation code or otherwise use serial ports under a
non-suid-root dosemu session.
By browsing the code I found out that the reason that lockfile
creation requires root privileges is that the lockfile is chown'ed
to the uucp user (or whatever is set in OWNER_LOCKS or
owner_tty_locks). I don't know much about lockfiles or UUCP, but
at least minicom creates lockfiles as the user who is running it.
/var/lock is usually world-writable, so this is possible.
How about making the code such that it works as it currently does
when dosemu has root permissions, and when it runs as a user it
simply creates lockfiles as that user. dosemu could issue a
warning in this situation, it could be a separate configuration or
whatever; the main point is that it could be made to work.
As for my BBS, I have two options: either change the dosemu code
or run dosemu suid root. I haven't decided yet which one I'll
choose.
Regards,
Osma Suominen

Older versions would be the best bet. For example, I *KNOW* the SB code
will not compile under NetBSD.

'vgaemu' (under X) will probably work, but can you compile it ?
None of the developers run Free/NetBSD so we have no idea. Having said
that, we presume the answer is now "No".

I'm going to suggest people reach for the dictionary more often. To
suggest that my comments (or my feelings) were evidence of an 'old grudge'
or a 'personal malice of the worst & most enduring nature' is taking
things a little far ....
For the record:
When I checked the Caldera WWW site before sending the mail I saw no
mention of the "offer". Maybe I missed it, maybe it wasn't there. *shrug*
Checking the sites first is standard practice for me. I even go as
far as checking the main dosemu site itself, despite having all the
original files *ON MY MACHINE*.
My personal feelings where those of being let down, rather than hatred,
when Caldera changed their license agreement.
I have NEVER owned a copy of MS-DOS (as such). Until I got a machine with
W95 on it ALL of my versions of DOS have been based on DR-DOS.

sounds like you're using freedos. Try using a real DOS with lredir since
freedos does not work with lredir.

This is bug in 0.99.9 when glibc-2.0.X or glibc-2.1 is being used. Upgrade
to dosemu-0.99.10 where it is fixed or apply following patch (already in
0.99.10)

I have tried several times to redirect my cdrom drive in dosemu using the
'lredir' command.
lredir D: LINUX\FS\mnt\cdrom
can someone tell me what might be wrong?
I'm not sure, but you might need to put an initial "\" before "LINUX".
Are you sure that the directory you want to appear as "D:" is named
"LINUX/FS/mnt/cdrom" from the current directory from which you start
dosemu?

Subject: No cursor in DOS application
I have a dialup/3270 terminal emulator for DOS that I need to run in an
X-window. I've finally got everything working except that when the
terminal session opens I can no longer see the cursor. I can see it if I
run dosemu and the application from the linux console, but not under X.
Fiddling with the video settings for X in the dosemu config file hasn't
helped either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: Bug?
Hi,
i'm new to DosEmu, i use the german distribution
SuSE 6.0, Kernel 2.2.6 (also tested the problem
with 2.2.1). I downloaded dosemu-0.66.7, typed
a "./configure" as user. The output told me that
i'd have a SMP-system, which is not true, the
kernel (both) were compiled without SMP support.
Then i typed "make", this failed, because (in a
subdirectory) in the file "slang-keyboard.c" there
were two (VOID *), which were unknown. I changed
them to (void *). In "ipx.c" there was an undefined
SOL_IPX in an environment like
#ifdef 1
something with SOL_IPX
#else
something without SOL_IPX
#endif
so i changed "#ifdef 1" to "#ifdef 0". Now everything compiled
fine, but the "./first-test" failed:
schleim:/home/tmohr/dosemu-0.66.7 # ./first-test
ERROR: Unable to initialze SMG routines.
schleim:/home/tmohr/dosemu-0.66.7 #
I don't know what SMG is, didn't find anything like
it in the docu.
Before i installed dosemu-0.66.7 i tried the dosemu
that came with the "SuSE 6.0". I configured it
and typed "dos -o error -C" (as user and as root, both kernels).

That version of dosemu is very old. Please download
dosemu-0.98.6 from ftp://ftp.dosemu.org instead.

Subject: Bug? (fwd) please forget my last mail
Hi,
just now that i've sent my mail, i have to say
it works now. Not the compiled DosEmu, but the
one that came with the "SuSE 6.0". I just took
the "hdimage.test" as "hdimage.first".
I also forgot to mail that i created my "hdimage.first"
from a 4DOS DOS floppy, it seems this is a
problem.
But the problem compiling dosemu-0.66.7 still exists.
Sorry for causing traffic,
Torsten.

Subject: netx.exe under dosemu
Hello, I have dosemu-0.98.1-2 with dosemu-freedos-0.98.1-2 on Red Hat
5.2.
I try to login on Netware 3.12 with it. I configured ipx on my linux
system and in dosemu.conf and I copied netx.exe to the dosemu
partition.
When I start netx it starts to login to the novell server but then it
hangs.
It looks like this:
C:\BIN>netx
NetWare Workstation Shell v3.32 (931117) PTF
( C) Copyright 1993 Novell, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Patent Pending.
Running on DOS V3.31
Attached to server NLHAGS02
04-20-99 2:30:20 pm
And then I don`t get my prompt back.
Does anybody know what could be wrong ?
Thanks in advance for the answer.
