Subject: dosemu problem
Sorry if I missed how this is done in the docs, but...
Can anyone help me with xdos/dosemu? I'm trying to get my one dos app to
run but can't get dosemu to cooperate.
I have installed dosemu and it is working. I have created (using WIN95 boot
floppy) a msdos FAT16 partition to be used as drive d: in dosemu.
It is defined in fstab as /dev/sda6 /dos msdos umask=000
( The /dos directory is currently owned by root group root permissions 777
and I am running as root initially, in order to get this working.)
I tried the following (per the dosemu readme 0.99 at www.dosemu.org) at dos
prompt:
lredir d: linux\fs/dos
this gave the following error:
Error f0bc redirecting drive D: to LINUX\FS/DOS
A separate issue: I have put a path statement into the autoexec.bat on the
dosemu boot drive but it does not seem to execute when xdos is started.
I am running RH6.0 and freedos is also installed.
Thanks,
David

Subject: irqpassing patch
Well, nobody responded to my request, so I had to wade through gdamn
bison source code, and I found what appears to be the bug. I am not
sure, since I don't know how the gdamn grammar is supposed to work.
The problem:
Only the last IRQ requested for IRQ passing is acutally configured.
The CONF messages note the request, but the vm86 request is never
made, and the IRQ is not allocated to dosemu.
The solution:
For some reason, the config.sillyint variable is zeroed EVERY time
a value is parsed in the irqpassing grammar. Only the last value
is saved. I looked and I think config.sillyint is initialized correctly
before the grammar gets going, to I have no idea why this rule
is coded like that. I just removed the clear and it works for me.
Areas of uncertainty:
The next rule down seems to ASSIGN the value of config.sillyint rather
than use the set_irq call that the previous rule does. IMHO this should
be an OR, or more likely, thrown away. I have no idea. I can't figure
out what irq_bool is.
Other problems:
The call to request the IRQ passing assignment appears to fail silently
if it can't allocate the IRQ. I would assume you would want a debug
message.
Here is the patch:

Yup, that's correct. However, the statement is intended to be given only
_once_ but with all IRQ flags you need.

Don't do that, it has other odds. The bug is in global.conf (not in
parser.y) doing multiple statements, here is the patch:

I've compiled version 0.98.7 of dosemu and the first-test script works

I'm not sure how to word this or even exactly how to word my
problem. What I would like to do is install programs from a CD to the
freedos hdimage. I have my regular dos partition mounted as C:, and the
freedos image as D:. I read the documentation about the driver it is
supposed to have, but couldn't find the cdrom.sys file. The native DOS
driver gives an error message and then abort or retry. It may help more
if I have the logs, but alas, I don't know how to make logs with it. In
Linux, it is /dev/sbpcd if that helps at all. I'm using dosemu 0.98.??
whichever came with RH5.2. This is probably way confusing, but any help
is appreciated. I will send logs or more info as long as you tell me how
to get it. Thanks in advance.

Hi David,
freedos doesn't yet support lredir.
You should try msdos or caldera's drdos or any other dos(novell dos ...)

Subject: How could DOSemu destroy the working kernel?
Hi. I am using dosemu-0.99.11 and while running it and after exiting
the program I was in I got the message "unable to handle paging
request ..." and ever after that I couldn't login to any virtual
console, I couldn't even get back the virtual terminal dosemu was
using, and I couldn't do too much else -- even shutdown didn't work.
I am using 2.2.7 kernel on a 200mhz machine with 3 IDE disk drives.
What I am wondering is how an app could cause such things -- I thought
this was one of the benefits of Linux that an app could go south and
not destroy the system.
I can provide further details, put the oops through system.map, etc,
if necessary.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Maybe it is the problem I had, on RedHat 5.1 (2.0.34) and 5.2 (2.0.36)
with many versions of DosEmu. The problem is DosEmu allocates lots of
memory, until OS cannot assign more. Unfortunately, ulimit does not
affect it - is the ulimit really working on Linux?
When you have no free memory, you cannot even shutdown the system.
What can be done? Large swapfile, and when free space on it drops
below, say, 64MB, kill the task which allocates most of memory.

That kind of error is often, if not usually, a hardware probably. From the
sound of it, your machine might be getting hot sometimes. After all, we are
starting to get into the warmer months. If you can reproduce this same
situation, then maybe it is some kind of horrible bug in dosemu.

Subject: Need some smaller vga fonts
Been out of the dosemu loop for a long time. Like a lot of the changes that
have happened over the last couple years. Good job guys...
This time around I have some fairly simple straitforward Dos programs that I
would like to run in an xdos window. Is working just slick, but both of them
pop into 52 line mode on occasion, and in that mode the Dos box is just a bit
too high to fit on one screen. I've tried using different fonts in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc directory, and they produce appropriately sized
DOS windows, but they don't seem to have the proper line drawing character sets
that both programs are using extensively.
So I think what I need are some smaller vga type fonts. Anyone have any
pointers to where these could be found.

Subject: trying to boot to WIN95 boot floppy
I have not been able to boot successfully to a WIN95 boot floppy using
dosemu as follows:
xdos -A
The dosemu window pops up but it is blank and never displays anything.
My terminal window displays:
kernel CPU speed is 463917406 Hz
Running on CPU=586, FPU=1
ERROR: X: Unable to open font "vga"ERROR: ,trying "vga"...
ERROR: X: Unable to open font "vga"ERROR: ,trying "9x15"...
The above display on the terminal window is identical to the display when I
run "xdos" successfully using the hdimage created when dosemu was installed
(when I installed RedHat 6.0 which installs dosemu 0.99).
I am doing this as a step to try to access a msdos partition on my scsi hard
disk since lredir is not available using freedos.
If I can boot to the floppy can I then make the hdimage bootable using
WIN95 dos? Or how can I make the msdos partition on the hard drive the boot
drive (it already has the system files installed) ?
I plan on running one dos application only in the partition, but it is a
disk intensive program with about 1.1 GB database consisting of about 35,000
files and it will receive a steady stream of data via the serial port. I
would appreciate advice on the best way to set this up.
Thanks,
David

It's a bug in that version of dosemu - Red Hat should have known better
than to ship that version - if you download and install dosemu 0.98.7
(the latest stable version)
from ftp.dosemu.org, it will fix the bug

Subject: Strange bug with DOS 5.0
Hello,
I unpacked and built a clean copy of DOSemu 0.99.12
on a Red Hat 6.0 system. When I booted MS-DOS 5.0 from
either C: or A:, it quietly skipped the config.sys file.
Everything ran as if config.sys didn't exist.
0.99.11 behaved the same way, so I knew what to do.
I unpacked DOSemu again, edited compiletime-settings
to say "dodebug on", and built it. Now DOS 5.0 always
reads config.sys.
Go figure.

Is likely you've hit on an EGCS bug. I've included a workaround in the
upcoming 98.8 that will probably appear in the 99.13 release too.

as for the screen sizes listed below (ie. VGA, 9x15) I was tring to find
out about this too, I posted a message to the list and received no reply.
I tried to make a new hdimage with setup-hdimage but it would not work
with RH 6.0 and i've never used mtools before to know how to do it manually.
Probably the easiest way is to: create a directory like
/var/lib/dosemu/msdos and copy your boot files including autoexec.bat and
config.sys in there, make a symbolic link in the /var/lib/dosemu
dorectory called dos and have it point to the msdos directory, then
change the line in your /etc/dosemu.conf where you see something
like $HDIMAGE =xxxx and change the xxxx to dos. that should do it.
If you are only using dosemu for 1 thing then you can just set all that
in the autoexec, including the lredir stuff. Win95,98 dos works fine,
just make sure you have the BOOTGUI=0 in the msdos.sys.
hope this helps...

I have RH 6.0 and am trying to get my floppy to work from dos. All it
does is lock up the machine so I have to reboot it to regain control.
my dosemu version is 0.99.10-5mdk which came with RH6.0
In the /etc/dosemu.conf file, I set the line
$_floppy_a="threeinch:/dev/fd0"
as the comments in dosemu.conf suggest. My floppy works fine in Linux
and I have unmounted it before trying to run dos.
when I type a: or dir a: or anything with an a: in it, the machine
keyboard locks up so I have to do a re-boot to get control again.
It must be something simple, but I have read through every doc file and
HOWTO manual I can find and little is mentioned about the floppy drive
other than what I have done.
any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Subject: Can't get floppy to work under DOSEMU
I've installed dosemu-0.99.10-4 on my Red Hat 6.0 system. I'm running
with the stock DOSEMU configuration: i.e., no changes to either
dosemu.conf or dosemu.users. I've tried the hdimage file that came with
DOSEMU (wouldn't even boot), the current hdimage on Caldera's web site,
and the hdimage from FreeDos-0.99.10-4.
The Caldera and FreeDos images boot up just fine, and the simple tests
I've tried work OK (e.g., dir, type, etc.).
However, I can't get the floppy to work. Under both the Caldera and
FreeDos images, a command such as "dir a:\" causes the activity light on
the floppy drive to come on, I can hear the drive seek, and then ...
nothing. DOSEMU hangs, there's no additional activity on the floppy
drive, and the only way out is to kill the "xdos" or "xtermdos".
I have grep'ed for "floppy" in every text file delivered with the DOSEMU
rpm, and I didn't find anything that seemed to be relevant to this
problem. A DOS system that won't read a floppy isn't too useful.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks.

Jeff,
Get the rpm for dosemu 0.98.7 from www.dosemu.org. That's the lastest stable
version, unless 0.98.8 was recently posted (I hear it's coming soon). The
dosemu shipped with RH 6 has a floppy access bug that just bit you.
I'm very surprised RH shipped anything other than an officially recognized
stable version. O.99.x are developer versions. 0.98.x are stable versions.
The general Linux rule, I understand, is that even versions are stable, odd
are developer.

Will,
I'm still a relative newbie myself. But I can certainly tell you where the
dosmemu files are:
ftp.dosemu.org/pub/dosemu/
In that directory, get the following for your RH system, unless there's a
later 9.98.x version posted:
dosemu-0.98.7-1.i386.rpm
I think the RH 5.2 CD has dosemu 0.98.1. Definitely ftp that later version.
Of course, you won't be able to anything with that file until you install
your RedHat system. It won't work under anything but Linux.
I also suggest getting the following book soon:
SAMS Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours
You can get it from amazon.com.

I've had some problems with Paradox 3.5 in the same configuration like
you. I got the _sources_ for dosemu 0.98.7, I compiled the code and
everything works perfectly now. Maybe you should try this.
Good luck.

I'm starting to hear this come up more and more now; my version of dosemu
also does this (through Procomm Plus) I'm going to try a few things here
and see what I can get but I think it might be a bug. Red Hat must have
really wanted to be on the cutting edge with 6.0 because they included a
developer version. You might have to download 98.7 and do a rpm -ivh
packagename -oldpackage.
hope this helps...

Jeff,
I had a similar problem in that I could not boot that 0.99 version of dosemu
to a: drive.
I understand that your machine is not yet web ready. The following will
help you after you have the 0.98-7 rpm of dosemu.
Once you get the rpm for the .98-7 version it is easy to install with RH 6.0
and it should work! I did the following on my machine with RH6.0.
Assuming you have X-window working, you can use gnorpm to uninstall the
existing 0.99 version. Type gnorpm in a terminal window and the gnorpm
application will run. Then in the gnorpm window find the
Applications-emulators folder and highlight the 0.99 version of dosemu and
click the Uninstall button, but only uninstall the dosemu, not the xdos or
the freedos. (The versions of freedos and xdos installed with RH6.0 will
work with ver. 0.98-7 of dosemu.) When that is done, then click on the
install button and in the install window click on add. Then point to the
directory where you have the 0.98-7 rpm stored and add it. Then click
install.
Then it should install and you can test it by running xdos.
This is the procedure that I used successfully. If anyone else has any
suggestions for improvement, I am all ears.

Subject: MS FoxPro
Hi all,
It has been asked before, and I know there is 'some information' about MS FoxPro
in the
dosemu FAQ's but that information is very close to useless.
All the FAQ says is:
" 11.15 MS FoxPro 2.6 won't run
FoxPro 2.6 doesn't run on network drives. Alexey Naidyonov
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
states on that problem: And I guess your FoxPro files are on
lredir'ed disk, yeah? The matter is
that FoxPro doesn't run on such disk, but when I said disk {
partition ... } in /etc/dosemu/conf, it
runs. "
I have already tried that, but that is not the problem at all.
The real problem is that Dosemu segfaults immedeately after starting
AccountView, which is
an MSFoxPro application.
It apparantly tries to use memory or ports that the Linux kernel protects.
So: has anybody any idea how to find out what memory that might be, and how I
could give it to
MS FoxPro, and also if that would be save to do ?
Thank you very much,
Roland Nagtegaal

Subject: F0BC error?
When i try to run dosemu with the freedos on a lilnux server i get the
errors
F0BC or f0b8 or f0c0
what do they mean?
I am trying to use a linux server to allow terminals to log into it and run
Sage Line 100 on dosemu.
I need to do this as I have to try and set-up the Sage to work over a VPN
WAN. Since Sages database is in excess of 100MB which is dragged over the
network whenever anyone does anything apart from the 400K program which has
to load off the server this proves difficult or expensive over a WAN.
Any help is much appreciated. As Sage won't even consider it.

Subject: DOSEMU and dr-dos
I am using dosemu 99.10 which came with redhat 6.0.
I have a ati ragepro with 4 meg of ram.
I am trying to use dosemu with dr-dos 7.03.
I am having difficulty in the following areas.
1) Cant get the native mouse driver to work , when gpm is running. there
seems to be
some conflicts here.
2) dr-dos utilities seem to be using some special type of graphics mode or
symbols, which
dont display properly, I cant figure this out , this happens both in
x-mode and console mode.
3) dr-dos dpmi and emm386 are both incompatible with dosemu emulation, I
tried loading dr-dos
native dpmi services, but that didnt work, because it requires the
dr-dos verison of emm386,
and of course i couldnt load that, because the dosemu emm386 emualtion
got in the way.
Thanks for any suggestions you can give me !!!

Use gpm with the -R option.
Use the internal dosemu mouse driver.
Put the following to your dosemu.conf:
$_mouse = "mousesystems" # for use with gpm, _not_ the real mouse
protocol
$_mouse_dev = "/dev/gpmdata"
> 2) dr-dos utilities seem to be using some special type of graphics mode or

I didn't try, so no help possible. Maybe you have to live with it.
Novell dos 7 and drdos 6 change some characters dot matrix to produce
another display of the same ASCII-code. I'm afraid, dosemu can't
handle this situation.

Use the internal dosemu utilities! ems and dpmi can't be managed by the
drdos utilities.
Use in dosemu.conf:
$_ems = (16384) # in Kbyte, put in your own values
$_dpmi = (16384) # in Kbyte, put in your own values
Use in your dosemu config.sys:
device=ems.sys
ems.sys can be found e.g. on /var/lib/dosemu/commands
Thats all!
Read the documentation on the above topics; it will help to understand,
what's going on.

I don't have an answer for you but I experienced the same thing this
weekend. I went one desperate step past this and re-installed Linux
since I didn't have much to lose. Problem then got so I had NO mouse.
When I installed Linux, it couldn't find my mouse so I told it where it
was but that didn't help much.
I cant remember the exact name of the program I ran (Linux is down now
for another reason so can't look it up) mouse-fix or mouse-diagnostic
or something like that and it still couldn't find it. Running
mouse-fix (?) /dev/ttyS0 may simplify the troubleshooting.
I booted with another HD that had windows on it and my mouse works fine
so I know it's not a hardware problem.
sorry I had no help but you are not alone
good luck

Last I checked, there weren't any recent databases of programs that do
and don't work in DOSEMU. I have a friend that asked me about a few
programs, and I'm not sure if they would or not. Does anyone on this list
know how well these programs run:
Wolf3D
Wolfstein Spear of Destiny
Colony
All programs were designed for a 286 or 386 he said, and his system is
quite a bit faster than that. Is there a way to limit DOSEMU to how fast
it runs so that he can play his games at the desired speed?

Hi Dietrich,
did you enable ems, xms or dpmi in your dosemu.conf? If not, you could
try with this parameters. Otherwise I don't know, what else could be
done. SIMON just want to do things that are not possible for any linux

I don't know, but I can tell you that would have serious implications for a
lot of gamers - it would mean that classic DOS games - in my case, Sierra's
King's Quests, Space Quests, Police Quests, Quests for Glory, and Leisure
Suit Larrys - would run better under Linux than under Windows 9x, which
hardly runs them at all. Has anyone run any of the games I just mentioned
under DosEmu?

Subject: dosemu can't access font vga
Hello,
I still can't make dosemu run. I recently upgraded to RedHat 6.0 which
includes dosemu 0.99.10 in the hope that it would help but it did not.
After I type xdos in an xterm I get these messages:
kernel CPU speed is 334098222 Hz
Running on CPU=586, FPU=1
then it pops up a window that dies immediately and I get
ERROR: X: Unable to open font "vga"ERROR: , trying "vga"...
ERROR: X: Unable to open font "vga"ERROR: , trying "9x15"...
I checked that I do have /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/vga.pcf as well as
9x15 in the same place.
As I said in my previous message, running on the console gives a different
error:
VT_ACTIVATE: Operation not permitted.
Seems like some access privileges to graphic are not set but this happens
even for root. Can anybody give me a clue?
Regards,
Petr

I also have RH 6.0 and I get the same error message. The only difference
for me is that it does work beyond that. Can you run dos to make it run?
BTW, does anyone know what file these 2 eror messages are being called up
from?

You probably forgot to rebuild the font info; running something like
mkfontdir /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc
xset fp rehash
should do.
Bye,
Steffen
