It=27s not a dos issue it=27s a bios issue=2C or at least should be=2E
And it should be fully supported in dosemu=2E Though I seem
to recall an oddity or two=2C mostly that in a telnet window
we default to the terminal window size and not 80x25 as the
initial mode=2E
Can you please give me a good description of how you are trying
to run this program=2C and how you are trying to set this video mode=2E

Hi Hans=2C
it works wonderfully=21 I upgraded from =2E98; the rpm install was
flawless=2E
The 16=2Dcolor VGA support under X Window is great=2E So is the
automatic resizing of the xdos window to accomodate 80 x 50 and
80 x 43 modes=2E The cursor blink rate works properly=2E 1=2E0=2E1 parses
dosemu=2Econf better=2C catching a tiny error that I=27ve had in there
for a long time=2E It even seems to run noticeably faster=2E This
release contains a number of things I=27ve wanted for a long time=2E
I=27m thrilled=21
Thanks and regards=2C

Hi Eric=2C
Your comments are encouraging to me=2E Here are the details on this
program and its video support=2E
Ashton=2DTate=27s Framework IV dates from 1991=2E It ships with a set of
generic video drivers enabling all the ordinary text and graphical VGA
modes=2C plus a set of SVGA=2Dmode drivers specific to various chip sets=2E
By examining the drivers with a Framework video utility=2C I can see that
the differences among the drivers mainly involve the column=2Frow values
for the character counts and the hex values in the AX and BX registers=2E
For example=2C here are values for three typical drivers=3A
COL ROW AX BX Description
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
132 44 0033h 0000h 16=2Dcolor 640x480 text mode
80 50 1112h 0000h 16=2Dcolor 640x480 text mode
100 31 4F02h 0102h 16=2Dcolor 800x600 graphics mode
All of these drivers work fine using a Mach 64 board =28ATI Graphics
Expression=29 under OS=2F2 4=2E0=2E Only the first two work fine =28same co=
mputer=2C
same ATI card=29 under xdos 1=2E0=2E1 =28using MSDOS 6=2E2 and XFree86 3=2E=
3=29=2E
It=27s the 132x44 text mode driver that doesn=27t work=2E Using it=2C the
program does indeed run=2C but the display =22wraps=22 unevenly at 80 colum=
ns=2C
scrambling the screen=2E
If DOSEmu really can support 132=2Dcolumn VGA text mode=2C that would be
awesome=21

I=27ve read in the last release that DOSEMU now supports virtual comports=

If I can get some help from the developers regarding how to set them up

this up for distribution with DOSEMU=2E I know there are a lot of people
out there who need help =28me=29 and if its goes out with DOSEMU=2C it will

But what way the software is to access so many comports
simultaneously=3F Usually DOS programs get com port info
from BIOS table=2C which has 4 entries =28at 40h=3A0=2E=2E7=29=2E
If a DOS program is to use more=2C it must have some way
to find them=2C and this is usually hardware=2Ddependent
=28e=2Eg=2E there are multiport serial cards with 8 ports =2D do
you mean using such a cards=2C or I missed something=3F=29=2E
Or maybe you want to run separate DosEmu for each
external connection=2C but in such a case even these 4
comports for a DosEmu session is more than you need=2E

I have a dedicated server for the task of running a specific DOS

through DOSEMU=2E As my number of users increased=2C I found that a shared

In order to buy myself some time to find the solution=2C I tried to let

that configuration=2E
While using DOSEMU =28on lredir drive=29 I have NEVER seen that message=2C =

Each and every user uses exactly the same configuration once into dos=2E

Is DOSEMU still limited to only using network card associated with the primary IPX
interface (set with IPX_INTERFACE -P etc ...)? In cases where the network card is a
bottleneck for multi-user performance it would be handy to be able to split DOSEMU
users to use other cards.

I'm running into the same problem here. Relevant pieces of

$_serial ="hello" ... is uncommented
$_com1 = "virtual"
$_com2 = ""

I'm only getting a single error here:

At this point dosemu is hung. I never get to DOS at all. Has anyone
come up with a fix for this yet?

Subject: Re: Dos Doors and virtual Comports
I'm not sure about your error message, but dosemu isn't hanging. It
"replaces" your tty with the COM device(s?) from what I can tell. So, in
order to use it, you have to have an autoexec.bat that run's a door, with
the proper settings, and then the door will write to the com port. When
the door writes to the com port, it will then appear on your screen, if
I'm understanding the virtual flag properly. So it's no longer doing
stdin/stdout - it's doing it via the COM port(s?).

Subject: EMS memory in dosemu
How can I use EMS memory under dosemu?
Problem is: I have some old games and I want to run them with dosemu, but
they need EMS memory.
I am using the /dev/hda1 as a boot dir, with config.yyy and autoexec.xxx
instead of the normal ones being called from dosemu.conf. In my w98
install, I use memmaker to access the himem regions, and free more
conventional memory. In dos I have 618Kb, but in dosemu I really don't know
what to do, since the messages that "already in protected mode" keep appearing.
I also would like to use my sblive under dosemu, but it needs SB16
emulation, and this is loaded with a .com in the autoexec that needs
memmaker to be enabled.
Configuration: Pentium III 128Mb, Red Hat 6.2 w/ standard kernel
(2.2.14-5), SB Live, Riva TNT2 32 Mb (working flawlessly with X), dosemu 1.0.1
So, the questions are:
1. How to use memmaker, or himem, or emm386 or qemm under dosemu? Is it
possible?
2. How to use SBLive, sb16 emulation or general midi under dosemu? Is it
possible?
3. Any success with VESA games? Some games crash after the initial screen.
Thanks in advance!

How much EMS memory have you defined in /etc/dosemu.conf?

Subject: Cherry chip card reader and dosemu
Hi!
I'd like to use programs that access the chip card reader that's
built into some Cherry keyboards with dosemu. In plain DOS it works
but with dosemu it doesn't. It's the same with Windows but for Windows
drivers are available. Is there any chance of getting it working with
dosemu? I think the problem is the direct hardware access those
programs try but those hardware is not emulated ...
Would be great if you could help me!

Subject: Re: Dos Doors and virtual Comports
My logic on this would be that the virual flag would be there to simply
accomodate doors or a bbs program in a way that it will simply relay the
output from the virtual comport to stdout and any user interaction to
stdin would be redirected to the virtual comport thus making the door do
whatever it does? So are you essentially saying that I need to have
something talking through the comport only with that flag? I suppose that
makes sense... ...I guess... :) So basically if I want to use the DOSEMU
for other reasons I just need to have a separate config file...
Did I just answer my question? :)

Of course we can make it faster with the JIT stuff from Alberto Vignani.
But this is dosemu 1.1 stuff for now and the JIT simulator is not
coupled to the 1.0 interpreting instruction simulator yet. So don't hold
your breath, but I am optimistic.

Subject: file sharing problem (continued)
I added new info to the page:
ftp://zfja-gate.fuw.edu.pl/mail-ftp/zfja-ftp/linux/index.html
I did some test how file sharing (open with share modes) works
on MSDOS and on Novell, and thinked about ideas what to do to
get similar behavior in programs like DosEmu, Mars, Samba.
My results, comments and ideas are on link "tests of open".
Seems with some effort it is possible to make good emulation.

I'm having a little bir of trouble getting a dos4gw program up and running

All is as per dosemu-1.0.1 RPM except for these mods to the conf file..

$_ems = ( 2048 )
$_ems_frame = ( 0xe000 )
$_dpmi = ( 2048 )
I've tried a fair bit of random number changing here, with the only other
result being a few out of memory messages.
When running the program I get ...

I've tried from the console and from X, with all security off, have
checked for any vpci/pharlap/win32s string in the binary but can't find a

I have to be missing something simple here.. Does anyone have any clues on

Subject: virtual works! But..
yay....
one problem though.. :)
Basically what I have done is set it up so that my BBS program (Telegard)
will load up as if someone was already connected (Just as if I was spawing
the BBS from Front Door). This works beautifully... its quick and
reliable.
The main problem I am having is with the hangup procedure. When the bbs
goes to drop carrier it pukes..
Is there a way to get the vmodem 'driver' to recognize certain commands sent
to the com port..
ie '+++ATH0' would disconnect a telnet session or send whatever response a
modem would expect after a command like that (I think its just NO CARRIER)
Also, additional comports would be good.. Telegard can handle 255... I
don't know how.. but it does... :)
I will do up a 'howto' for this eventually.. once I get the kinks out..

I'm telnetting to my Linux system using an ANSI capable terminal,
with TERM set to either ansi or vt100. I start dosemu and it loads
ansi.sys. I can display ANSI, but it looks like the Linux console
font... high-ASCII characters don't display properly. Anyone have
any ideas here?

Subject: 20 bit adresses for old GKS
Hello,
Background:
- -----------
I have some old programs for electrical field-calculation for DOS using
the German "Grafisches KernSystem" (GKS) as a grafic library. Sourcecode
for the program and the libraries are unavailable.
The program fits in a very efficient way the needs of student education
in electrical field calculation. -- So I like to use it furthermore.
The GKS-Library was written at the time, where PC does not have more
than 20 Bit adressable memory. The upper BITs of the adresses (Bit 20 to
Bit 23), to my knowledge, are used for calling and return parameters for
this GKS-library-functions.
Problem:
- --------
Nowadays 32-Bit OS working as host for the programm inside the DOS-BOX
or emulators LINUX DOSEMU and VMWARE quits this program with a system
error message like
"OS386 needed" -- a message from the emulator. This is the similar
message with WinNT.
At the moment, the only solution is to start the program from a special
bootdisk. But all network services (File, Print) are not available at
this time. I like to install a linux-server running this field
calculation program for the student access with printing over the
network to the net printers!
My work until now:
- ------------------
I tried CPU switches of DOSEMU (newer and older version 0.66 and 0.99)
with no change. Debugging the code was not very sufficient to me.
What are your recommendations? what should I do?
Thanks for reading and thinking about my problems.
Michael
