Have you had a look at volume 1 of the 2nd edition of Stevens' UNIX
Network Programming. It has quite a good discussion (IMHO) of IP
multicast (and a lot of other things besides) and he takes care to
explain the differences that one finds across the various
implementations.

Another possible source of info would be the ACE source code, as they
have multicast stuff that is supposed to work on DEC and Linux.
