I would suggest that this is the problem as you need a newer version of
pppd from ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/, I use 2.3.5 on both
2.0.35 and 2.1.1xx. The problem is that newer kernels use a different
tcp/ip stack that needs different iocalls. 

(I think it's different iocalls, I think that on of the clever kernel
hackers on list list will correct this if I am wrong :)
