I am attemting to add a linux box to an existing RIP group (part of a
migration to multiple data centers) and am running into problems. the
hardware is as follows

localnet1 localnet2
   | |
system1-----------system2
   | |
routergroup1 nothing (will be routergroup2)
    \ /
     \ /
      \_____ _____/
           | |
          field router (one of ~200)
            |
          destination net

system1
p-100 32MB ram IDE drive 3xTulip cards
slackware (nov 97) + upgrades +kernel 2.2.3

system2
p-266 64MB ram SCSI drive 3xTulip cards
redhat 5.2 + upgrades + kernel 2.2.3

I am not seeing any broadcast for localnet2 anywhere, I am only seeing a
broadcast of localnet1 on routergroup1 I am only seeing a broadcast of
routergroup1 on localnet1, and the crosslink between system1 and 2 is only
being broadcast by system2

I have attempted to run tcpdump on each interface, but am starting to
believe tat it is dropping packets as i don't see anywhere near the
correct number of RIP packets on ony segment. The routing table on system1
and system2 are both ~350 routes which is (almost) correct, while a
tcpdump only shows ~60-80 packets between the machines per broadcast.

troubleshooting is complicated by the fact that the first group of
machines are in production and so all changes must not interrupt service,
the second group of machines can be changed as nessasary

Any suggestions of things to try, or additional tests to make?

"If users are made to understand that the system administrator's job is to
make computers run, and not to make them happy, they can, in fact, be made
happy most of the time. If users are allowed to believe that the system
administrator's job is to make them happy, they can, in fact, never be made
happy."
