You are missing the module for bsd compression. In /etc/conf.modules, I
have the following entry:
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
and I have the bsd_comp.o module in my /lib/modules/<kernel>/net
directory. If you want to use this option, you might as well upgrade to
pppd 2.3.7. Otherwise, you can suppress the error message with:
alias ppp-compress-21 off
