Is this single PC linked (and visible) to the internet or any other larger
network ?
o If not, you must of course first select a primary domain name. (me
thinkz it's in /etc/sysconfig/network)
Also, add all the hostnames / domain as / in which it is known into
/etc/hosts e.g.
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localnet
10.0.0.1 primaryname primaryname.primarynet secondaryname
secondaryname.secondarynet
This way, you can ping your own system (IP 10.0.0.1) as primaryname,
as primaryname.primarynet, as secondaryname and as
secondaryname.secondarynet (and of course the loopback localhost and
localhost.localnet addresses).
o If you are connected to a network, and you do not administer DNS for
this network, you should either add the line for your system to each of the
/etc/hosts (c:\windows\hosts) files of all the systems that should be able
to find you, or ask the administrator of the DNS to add your domain name.
o For LANs not connected to the internet name chosing should be
without restrictions .. however, when you connect to the internet, your
domain has to be registered with InterNIC - then they (or at least your
toplevel domain admin) have to make the necessary changes (so if you have
my.very.owndomain.org, InterNIC should have the entry for owndomain.org, if
you have my.subdomain.someotherdomain.org, the DNS administrator of
someotherdomain.org should make you visible.)
