Hello I am relativly new to linux, as i am sure those who are good will see
from my questions. Here is my problem and what my goal is: Goal setup a
firewall or proxy to do this i know that i have to get two ethernet cards (i
did that i got two SMC cards). Right now i am not even going to address the
proxy or firewall issue, i think i know how to do that and there is yet a
large amount of reading i have to do on the topic! What i am going to
address is my problem with my ethernet detection. I am running Mandrake 6.0
(i also have RedHat 6.0 but i hear Mandrake is a little kinder to the new
linux user :O) So i first put one card in my machine (big mistake i should
have put both in but at the time of install i did not have both cards) i got
to the point where i could "ifconfig eth0" and all that cool stuff. I am
assumming when i am at this point the card is working, so i know that the
card can work on linux! Here comes the stupid part, i installed the second
card and turned on my machine, well this messed up my eth0 and did a bit
more, it gave me a ton of Inode errors (confliction with "Hostname" and
other networking stuff) I believe this to be a reflection of the new card
that i put in. So i thought well i will take that card out and try all over
(anouther big mistake!) now i can't get any eth0 cards to autodetect, and
the SMC-drivers that are in the linux.conf (network section) don't seem to
do the trick. So I reinstalled the system this time with both network cards
in and bam the next time after the install i get those same Inode errors
that appeared earlier! I fix them with fsck and then i try "ifconfig eth0"
and i can't get any output, all the shell says is that it can't find the
dev. Well this is nice run down of what i did in the last 5 waking hours
:O( Please if anyone has a clue as to what i am doing wrong or what i can
do to fix this and get it to work i would love it! Thanks in advance!
Dave
PS:
Could someone also tell me where i could get a free news server... my isp
does not support that and i would really like to read the newsgroups,
backlogs just aren't the same! Also anyone have any idea as to mailing list
i might want to join as a new user? Sorry for the really long post.
