Never mind.  

I thought the only way this could waor would be to disable the line
drivers & receivers on the box that was in standby mode.  I found out this
is exactly what they do.  There are only two active devices on the wire at
any given time.

Just had to wade though a few more pages of marketing drivel to find the
information.
