I don't care.
I only wrote that because people keep complaining that their 32 bit
counters overflow every few minutes.

It's true you can run a daemon.  But to do that you have to go to the
trouble of configuring & writing one, and using the results.  There are
plenty of monitoring programs that simply read /proc.

In other words: what if I want `ifconfig' to show me the correct byte
count, and I didn't plan ahead and run some special purpose daemon all
the time?
