i don't know that the machine HAS crashed.  its a remote server and is 
non-responsive to the network.  The server is 50 miles away so I can't 
really go see what's happening on the console and it gets rebooted remotely.

I am trying to get an SMC etherpower II card in there, but it doesn't work 
either in 2.2.16 and the newer versions on Donald's site don't even 
compile.  Is anyone out there successfully running a 100Mbit card under 
linux 2.2.x with SMP turned on using 2 or more processors?
