Do you have the 'defaultroute' option set in your /ppp/options file? With it
set, pppd will automatically set your default route and gateway to your isp
when the ppp link comes up.

Just had to deal with this issue myself, after long time using
stand-alone box.
I re-ran netconfig, entering my local i.p. 192.168.0.6, no gateway,
netmask 255.255.255.0, no nameserver. I think not entering the gateway
is what
got it done. It stops my eth0 routing becoming the defaultroute and ppp0
gets
to be default when the defaultroute is in the options file. I then
edited the
hosts file to add the info about its network neighbor at i.p.
192.168.0.5, and
the resove.conf file to add my isp's domain and nameserver info. I added
my
other computer's info below as it acting as network DNS when I'm not on
line.
I don't know if this the "right way" to do this, but so far it's working
for me.

Subject: ppp stopped working
Date: 26 Dec 1998 09:59:07 GMT
I have mystery on my hands. I had PPP working just fine. Then one day it
stopped. The only reason I could think of was that I had been fooling around
trying to figure out some local networking things. Maybe it was coincidence,
maybe not. I got some suggestions on another group but that did not seem to be
the problem.
I finally conceded defeat and took the Windows approach and re-installed Linux.
I reasoned that I had fouled some file somewhere that I would never find and a
clean re-install would fix it. I did manage to get one connection to my ISP's
home page.
The specifics:
RH5.0 kernel 2.0.32
PII 266MHz
64Mb RAM
USR 56k v.90 modem.
[NB--Since it was all working before, and continues to work on the Windows side
I think the hardware is not the problem.]
I used netcfg to set up my connection. I followed the instructions in "Linux
Unleashed" 2nd edition. I got my Red Hat CD from "Teach Yourself Linux in 24
Hours." It worked (past tense) just fine. Now it won't make a complete
connection. I can dial my ISP and even ping the server. That is all. I
cannot connect to the ISP's (or any other) web page. Once or twice after a
re-install (I've re-installed several times) I managed to connect to a page but
I could not repeat it.
On the Windows side my PPP connection is fine. I can connect to web pages etc.
It is not a case of my ISP flaking out.
The files--
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/host
--appear to be in order.
What am I doing wrong, or omiting?

well, do not know much about your modem, but, in
/etc/default/uugetty.ttyS3
I believe the /so=0 disabled answer. Try /so=1 so the modem
will answer on the first ring.

Subject: Problem setting up homenetwork with 3c509b.
Hello
I am trying to set up a small home network with 2 computers..
I bought 2 3com509b cards and a hub. I also have a laptop which I want
to connect in the future.
I am using slackware 3.5 and after adjusting /etc/rc.d/rc.modules the
kernel recognized my networkcards.
After configuring all the files I thought everything was OK but it is
not.
The computers are unable to PING each other.
I tried everything but after a week I am about to give up. I think it
has something to do with the routing.
I attached my configuration files for one computer called thor. The name
of the other computer is odin and the files are almost the same except
for a different IP adres.
Sorry for the long posting, I hope somebody can help me.

I'm trying to compile Caldera Netware server with RH5.1. At first I

I tried compiling a new kernel. First, I installed

try "make zImage" I get:

Subject: IP Masquerading & ports
Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 13:45:07 +0100
Heya ,
I have a serious question about IP Masquerading:
I am using my Linuxbox to masquerade the TCP packets of a Macintoshbox. The
programm I want to use on the Macintosh does the following:
It connects to a server using a default port and the IP address of the
server (works fine)
Then the server sends the Client (my Mac) the list pf IP addresses of other
users on the server. (works)
And also does this to the other users on the server (sends em my IP)
But then the connection between the users and me is not managed thourgh the
server but directly, so they have to try to lookup my IP and send the chat
packages to it. But because of Masquerading the packets never connect to
correct port, and my Linux machine doesnt know to which IP address forward
the packets on which port ...
So I cant see other users but the admin of the server.
I tried following:
ipfwadm -F -a m -P tcp 192.168.99.1/32 1024:20000 -D 0.0.0.0/0 1024:20000 -b
and for udp :
ipfwadm -F -a m -P tcp 192.168.99.1/32 1024:20000 -D 0.0.0.0/0 1024:20000 -b
Now the Linux machine should normally forward ALL packets on the correct
port to the Network machin on eth0 from the ISDN interface, not regarding
what kind of packages they are, wont it?
I u have any idea how I can set the route so the Linuxbox will do what I
want (forward everything on every port to the networkbox) then PLEASE answer
me!

and I cannot log in from a Windows box. Though the Samba sever is
listed windows does not see the shares and I get the sort of message one

I think the problem lies with Samba or its setup, possibly the nmbd
portion, on the
linux box. At the moment I'm out of ideas.
Any suggestions?
I suspect that there may be another problem relating to encryted

I am having problems with samba on linux:
I'm running Slackware 3.5 with Samba 1.9.18
Network is OK because can ping, telnet and ftp without problem from any
machine to any other where appropriate.
testparm smb.conf works OK and I get at I expected.
smbclient -L xxxx
1) Appears to work to a Win95 box but not an NT box.
2) when xxxx = linux (Hostname = COMPSAGNATHUS) I get the following
message:
Added interface ip=192.0.1.4 bcast=192.0.1.15 nmask=255.255.255.240
Session request failed (131,129) with myname=COMPSAGNATHUS
destname=COMPSAGNATHUS
Not listening for calling name
Try to connect as another name (instead of COMPSAGNATHUS)
You may find the -n option useful for this
The ip and subnet masks values look right.
and I cannot log in from a Windows box. Though the Samba sever is
listed windows does not see the shares and I get the sort of message one
would expect if it cannot see the computer. (applies to 95 and NT boxes)
I think the problem lies with Samba, possibly the nmbd portion, on the
linux box.
Any suggestions?
I suspect that there may be another problem relating to encryted
passwords with NT but at the moment I don't think it is the critical
factor.

Subject: smbmount problems

I have samba working to the point where I can see and print to the
Linux box with no problems. The problem that I am having is with
mounting the win95 box.
when I try to mount it to a valid mount point /var/log/massages tells
me smbmount need mount version 6, I have searched am not able to find
a version of mount greater than 2.4a.
I'm using RedHat 5.2, Samba 2.0 beta 4, kernel 2.1.130.
Thanks in advance....

Yes, this is actually what I did on my second computer before I put an
HD in it; said HD is rather small, though, so I left it as a DOS HD
and just added the loadlin boot loader, so I wouldn't hafta boot off
floppies. It still gets 100% of its Linux files from the network.

Yes, this sounds like NFS-on-root, where the machine broadcasts to
find an NFS server willing to supply it with a root FS. All that's
needed to do this is a kernel compiled with NFS built-in (not a
module, obviously), which then presents the option 'NFS on root'. See
the NFS-Root mini-HOWTO for information on how to set this up, and the
NFS-Root-Client mini-HOWTO for a good way to set up your client
directories, IIRC. I used it, and it works great, plus it's easily
expandable.

Sorry, I wouldn't know; all my cards come from used machines I bought
for under $75 (Canadian, at that), so I just go with what I get.
